GHD Waste Management

Construction and demolition wastes

GHD developed strategies for better management of excavated spoil and construction and demolition wastes for Resource NSW. Future projections of material quantities for the entire Sydney Region were made using a predictive model developed in-house.

Experience
Packaging waste
GHD was commissioned by Environment Australia to undertake the first independent review of the National Packaging Covenant, a major voluntary agreement by more than 500 brand owners, retailers, and all three levels of government, to minimise the environmental impacts of packaging waste.

Waste management strategies

GHD staff developed a waste management strategy for Sydney Airport, and have been engaged to assist in the implementation of that strategy. GHD prepared a waste management strategy for the City of Cairns, to assist it in optimising waste collection and recycling services. A waste stream analysis and assessment of the role of offsite transport/alternative waste technology was undertaken for Blue Mountains Council.

Refuse and recycling contracts

GHD was commissioned to tender all of Auckland City's refuse and recycling collection contracts for both the mainland and the Hauraki Gulf Islands. GHD developed options based on an expression of interest, prepared contract documentation, managed the tendering process for kerbside collection contracts and is now managing the paper recycling and collection contract for Manakau City Council in NZ.

Domestic waste audits

GHD staff conducted a detailed audit of procedures, practices and waste streams generated from administration offices and works depot for the City of Onkaparinga in SA. This led to GHD being commissioned to conduct a detailed audit of the kerbside recycling collection scheme.

Organic waste management

GHD is the independent engineer for the food waste treatment facility at Camellia in Sydney. The project involves a review of the process and operations of the plant, supervising testing and reporting to financial backers on particular aspects of the project, including verification of sources of feedstock. GHD investigated the status of the green waste market in South East Queensland and in NSW. These projects involved surveys of local councils and green waste producers, investigation of green waste as an alternative energy source and analysis of the green waste market structure.

Waste management in multi-unit dwellings

GHD investigated best practice waste management systems for multi-unit dwellings for Resource NSW. The project included a comprehensive review of available systems, development of a Guide for Councils and architects on design and waste management systems in such developments, development of a checklist for local government staff approving new developments and updating the City of Sydney's Code for Waste Handling in Buildings.

Commercial waste audits

GHD conducted waste audits over a period of two weeks on five of RTA's motor registries in Sydney and regional NSW, and in the Centennial Plaza main administration centre at Surry Hills. The audit collected data for RTA to include in its annual WRAPP (Waste Recycling and Purchasing Policy) report. GHD staff in Melbourne have conducted waste audits and waste management programs at RMIT campuses and facilities in Victoria. They have also been involved in waste audits at BHP facilities, including the Hastings facility in Victoria and, for Shell at its fuel storage and distribution complex at Spotswood, Victoria.

Alternative waste technologies

GHD is providing specialist advice on waste management issues associated with the SWERF in Wollongong for Brightstar Environmental, and preparing an EIS for expansion of the facility. An EIS is also being prepared by GHD for the proposed South Windsor municipal waste treatment facility, in Western Sydney. GHD has undertaken technology review and concept design work for tenderers for the Hunter Waste Project, which will establish alternative waste technology in the Newcastle region.

Waste management options studies

Rehabilitation of former landfill sites Landfill gas management, leachate collection, treatment and monitoring GHD undertook a regional waste management options study for the South West Queensland Local Government Association. This involved detailed site audits of landfills, assessing alternative opportunities and possible management variations and developing site based options for the ongoing management of these facilities.

Waste infrastructure
GHD prepared concept and detailed designs for Lemon Tree Passage and Salamander Bay Waste Transfer Stations, near Port Stephens. Concept designs were prepared for new waste transfer facilities in North Queensland and a feasibility study undertaken for new facilities at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains.
