INTRODUCTION:

Tinning a soldering copper is an operation that often has to be done on the job. The purpose of the tin cost of solder (called tinning) on the tip of a soldering copper is to aid the heat to pass from the hot copper to the solder and the work. Without this coat of solder on the point, copper oxides would form and act as an insulation to hold the heat back. It is impossible to solder if the copper is not properly tinned. Alright class, I will show you how to thin a copper and someone in the group will be called on to tin a copper while the rest of you watch. All of you will be using soldering copper during your shop work. The job is quite simple, but must be done exactly right or the tinning will not stick.

PRESENTATION: Steps in Tinning a Soldering Copper 1. Heat copper only enough to melt solder a. Show how to judge temperature b. Emphasize the effect of too much heat 2. Clean point of copper a. Use damp rag b. Rub point on sal-ammoniac block Caution: Do not breathe fumes. They are poisonous and cause headaches.

3. Apply solder a. How much and when b. Movement of copper over block 4. Re heat copper. While copper is heating, ask questions. a. How can we judge the temperature of the copper? b. What is the effect of too much heat? c. What will too much solder do while tinning? 5. Solder a seam with copper to show that it is now in good condition.

APPLICATION: 1. Take the third copper in need of tinning and call on one student to go through steps of tinning (If the copper has been heated with the others some time can be saved. 2. Point out key points in the process (Further application comes during later shop work). SUMMARY: Ask some students about the topic being discussed. EVALUATION: 1. Ask each student to list the steps in tinning a copper. 2. Exchange papers and give correct answers.
