2nd Inclusive Business Forum for the Philippines

Monday, 16 September 2013, 9 AM 5 PM Auditorium B, Asian Development Bank (ADB), 6 ADB Avenue, Ortigas, Metro Manila While economic growth has been persistently high in the last decade at around 6%, the country faces major challenges in providing productive employment, and adequate and affordable social and municipal services for the low income and poor population. About 26% of the Philippine population lives below the national poverty line, and 63% are vulnerable to poverty with income less than $3 a day/person. Inclusive growth is the new strategic objective for socio-economic development in the Philippines. However, while the private sector has been a key contributor to the economic boom in the Philippines, it has yet to fully realize its potential in creating shared value and impact for income group below the $3 vulnerability line (the base of the income pyramid, BoP). Inclusive Businesses (IB) are for-profit enterprises whose core business includes the low income segment in their value chain as consumers, suppliers, distributors or employees, thereby addressing systemic problems of poverty in scale. IB companies can be large or medium-scale enterprises. They are mostly in the growth phase of their business and typically do not seek trade-offs between financial and social returns. An Inclusive Business Forum for the Philippines was convened on 26 November 2012. At this first forum, the results of the market scoping study done for the country was presented and suggestions to support IBs in the Philippines were surfaced. The forum highlighted inclusive business models through thematic discussions and sectoral roundtable discussions. This 2nd Inclusive Business Forum for the Philippines will advance knowledge exchange on inclusive business, systematize good practices of IB models in the Philippines and engage possible investors on funding tenable proposals. Participants of the Forum will be representatives of companies with inclusive business models in the Philippines, possible investors (fund managers and banks), government representatives, and selected development partners.
