Madison Pinkney Professor Ingram ENG 1101-004 22 July 2013 Genre Study Conclusion High school and college

are different in many ways, but there is also some overlap. Both genres require eloquent language and rhetoric. Writing and composition are both integral parts of education; however the styles and genres that compile them are very different. My high school genre essay described a rap that I wrote about mitosis and meiosis while my college genre essay talked about college emails that were sent to professors. These were very different and interesting to compare and contrast the two. My high school genre was extremely laid back compared to college where the writing was more formal. My high school genre contained jokes and shortened phrases and this was normal, while this would be unheard of in my college genre. The pressure of college writing wasnt as evident in this genre and it made the environment seem more, although not completely, relaxed. Although my college writing was just an email, there was a lot of thought that went into it. I made sure that the subject was my concern so that my professor would know initially what the email was about. The body of the email explained clearly and concisely that I would not able to attend class that day due to a sickness and with reasons why. I also told my professor that I was on top of my assignments despite this absence and made sure that I sent the email as soon as I was sure I would not attend.

My high school genre was obviously more laid back and flexible than my college genre and I believe that it showed in the writing. In my high school genre, my audience was a classroom of teenagers while in my college genre, my audience was my professor. The level of respect that had to be incorporated in these writings was both completely different for numerous reasons beginning with the audience. Had my high school genre been aimed at my teacher or an older audience I wouldnt have used so many shortcuts in my wording, I wouldnt have used as many jokes and to be honest I probably wouldnt have formatted it as a rap anyway. However since this genre was ultimately up to me to create, I did all of these things. Expectations are much higher in college and rightfully so. Professors set these unwritten rules and regulations while students are expected to follow them. Professors set these rules by only tolerating certain things and students know that they must do what is asked of them. Emails that are sent to professor must be formal and show respect or else they will not be taken seriously and consequently cast into a junk folder. Although both of these writings are very different, their individual genres are both very important. Throughout the process of this genre study I have come to realize this and will definitely notice genres more in everyday life.
