EXT.

TOWN - EARLY EVENING As George guides the cart through the town center, PEOPLE turn their heads and look at him. George stops the cart, ties it to a post, and helps Sadie down. They walk into the town. GEORGE I need to buy seed. SADIE Okay. GEORGE (hands her some money) While I do that, go to Mrs. Cleavers, get some flour. Ill meet you there before Serps. SADIE Why are people looking at us? GEORGE Its nothing, Im sure. Just imagination. (George kisses her) Go get the flour now. George heads for a small store. Sadie stands in the middle of the road, very aware that she is being watched. She walks meekly towards a store, looks back behind her, and then enters. INT. MRS. CLEAVERS STORE - CONTINUOUS MRS. CLEAVER talks to a PATRON. Mrs. Cleaver is in her mid50s but looks older. The store is small and filled with foodstuffs. MRS. CLEAVER Gimme one reason I should trust em. You cant. I like Sheriff Howell. He do a good job here. He always been friendly to me and mine. PATRON Im not saying hes not friendly. Im saying hes not working. Look around you. Look at the town. Were hurting. The crops are broken, and we are up and dying.

Mrs. Cleaver and the Patron realize that Sadie has entered. They both look at her and stop talking. SADIE Id like to buy some flour, please. MRS. CLEAVER Whos your husband votin for? SADIE I dont know. PATRON Make sure he goes to the debate. Mansfield is ready for new blood. Rufus isMRS. CLEAVER How you not know who hes voting for? SADIE We havent talked about it. PATRON Does he know this town is hurting? Does he know that Rufus, as mayorMRS. CLEAVER I guess you two have more important things to discuss. PATRON Hell be able to change things. Go outside and look at the hurt around you and tell me we dont need change. SADIE Id just like a sack of flour, please. MRS. CLEAVER Like what hes gonna do with that dead black girl hes keeping. SADIE Please, I just wantPATRON Make sure he knows whats important now.

MRS. CLEAVER Like why he aint bury her yet. PATRON Now that you know, its your job to make sure he does. MRS. CLEAVER Sheriff Howell tell my husband that that girl still above ground. That aint right. Thats not natural. SADIE Shes. I dontMRS. CLEAVER So it so? That aint right. Sadie doesnt reply. MRS. CLEAVER (CONTD) What kinda trouble he lookin for? SADIE (quietly) I dont know. MRS. CLEAVER He gonna find it. Sadie turns quickly and leaves the store. PATRON I tell you, the town is dying. EXT. MRS. CLEAVERS STORE - CONTINUOUS Sadie leaves the store on the verge of hyperventilating. George approaches carrying a bag of seed. Sadie bends over and dry heaves, vomiting a little.
