Fsica matemtica
La fsica matemtica es el campo cientfico que se ocupa de la interfaz entre las matemticas y la fsica. El Journal of Mathematical Physics la define como: la aplicacin de las matemticas a problemas del mbito de la fsica y el desarrollo de mtodos matemticos apropiados para estos usos y para el desarrollo de conocimientos fsicos.[1]

Alcance
Existen distintas ramas de la fsica matemticas , las cuales a grandes rasgos se corresponden con perodos histricos especficos. La teora de las ecuaciones diferenciales en derivadas parciales (y reas afines del clculo variacional, anlisis de Fourier, teora del potencial, y clculo y anlisis vectorial) son temas muy ligados a la fsica matemtica. Estos temas fueron desarrollados con especial nfasis a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII (por ejemplo a travs de los trabajos de D'Alembert, Euler y Lagrange) hasta la dcada de 1930. Entre las aplicaciones fsicas de estos desarrollos se pueden mencionar la hidrodinmica, la mecnica celeste, la teora de la elasticidad, la acstica, la termodinmica, la electricidad, el magnetismo y la aerodinmica. Las teoras de los espectros de emisin atmicos (y posteriormente la mecnica cuntica) fueron desarrolladas simultneamente con campos de la matemtica tales como el lgebra lineal, la teora espectral de operadores, y en forma ms amplia el anlisis funcional. Las mismas forman la base matemtica de otra rama de la fsica matemtica. Las teoras especial y general de la relatividad requirieron de un tipo distinto de matemtica, que fue la teora de grupos, la cual desempe un rol importante tanto en la teora cuntica de campos como en la geometra diferencial. Sin embargo, fue gradualmente suplementada por la topologa en cuanto a la descripcin matemtica de fenmenos cosmolgicos y de la teora cuntica de campos. La mecnica estadstica constituye un campo distinto, el cual est fuertemente relacionado con la teora ergdica y algunos aspectos de la teora de probabilidades. Existe una interaccin cada vez mayor entre combinatoria y fsica, particularmente en el campo de la fsica estadstica. A veces el uso del trmino fsica matemtica es idiosincrsico. Mientras que ciertas partes de la matemtica que inicialmente se desarrollaron a partir de la fsica no son consideradas elementos de la fsica matemtica, algunos otros campos estrechamente vinculados s lo son. Por ejemplo, las ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias y la geometra simplctica son generalmente consideradas disciplinas puramente matemticas, mientras que los sistemas dinmicos y la mecnica hamiltoniana s pertenecen a la fsica matemtica.
