Dear Friends,
Last year was amazing in many ways. The economy was still in recovery and there was a very expensive and contentious election, but our donors continued to support our practical and costeffective approach to development - based on giving people a hand up, not a hand-out. While we maintained good growth and progress on our core reforestation and clean cookstove programs, we also made some exceptional progress on several new major projects, like our solar lighting program. Nationally, we continued to develop our new renewable energy training facility for Native Americans on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The inauguration of the Sacred Earth Lodge is set for October 11, 2013. I hope many of you will join us to celebrate this amazing new facility and see all of the work we have been doing at the Red Cloud Renewable Energy Center. The cornerstone of our efforts to bring green jobs training to tribes across the Great Plains, the new Lodge will enable us to accommodate up to 25 students and visitors. Internationally, we have also been busy developing the National Center for Biomass Energy & Climate Change in La Paz Centro, Nicaragua. This new regional center will provide the best knowledge available on adapting to global climate change. Through practical workshops and courses, we will help farmers and students find a way forward in a time of rapidly changing weather patterns. The land is purchased for the new Center and we have been working with our long-term Nicaraguan partners, Prolea, to develop the building plans for the facility. Recently, we broke ground and began construction on the first phase. This is the Trees, Water & People approach in action - taking practical steps forward to provide real and lasting sustainable solutions to some of todays most urgent environmental and human needs. Thank you to all of our donors and supporters for providing financial support, but also the wisdom and advice that makes our work possible! With gratitude,
Our Mission:
To improve peoples lives by helping communities to protect, conserve, and manage the natural resources upon which their long-term well-being depends.
Our Vision:
Our work is guided by two core beliefs: 1) Natural resources are best protected when local people play an active role in their care and management; and 2) Preserving local ecosystems is essential for the ongoing social, economic, and environmental health of communities everywhere.

REFORESTATION PROGRAM
Environmental protection from the ground up
Our reforestation program focuses on community-led tree planting, environmental education, and economic development both through conservation and the responsible management of forest resources. We work with local groups, schools, and communities in low-income rural areas to help them plant and maintain their trees. In Central America and Haiti, our tree nurseries produce tree seedlings for planting in deforested areas, family farms, and around homes. While some of these trees will be used for firewood, others will remain for the trees life, creating healthy soils and watersheds for many years to come.

CLEANTECH PROGRAM
Illuminating homes in Latin America
One out of every two people in the world have limited access to safe and affordable sources of energy. In Central America alone, 7.3 million people live without electricity. Our cleantech solar products not only reduce the use of natural resources and decrease emissions, they offer rural communities a source of renewable, clean energy. We are brining cleantech products to rural areas of Honduras, Nicaragua, and Peru in the form of solar lighting, solar electric, and solar phone chargers. These innovative products make it possible to fulfill the increasing need for light and phone chargers, while introducing technology that provides additional benefits, such as allowing families to work or study at night.
