Canadas Government

Dear Parents, This kit focuses on Canadas government and how our country functions. Read the introduction to Canadian Challenges Government: Participating in Canada Activities located in the student guide. You have 6 weeks with this kit, so please look through the material and roughly plan your schedule. Every family has a different schedule, and my hope is that you will make this curriculum work for you and your family instead of the other way around. Pick the important lessons to do and complete those. For the other sections, simply read the text and consider answering some questions orally in a discussion. Discovering Canadas Government has been included as a resource and includes activities in the Something to Do sections. Most lessons involve reading two pages from the text and completing one page from the student workbook. If you have any questions, please email me aimbeau@onlineschool.ca

Just a few notes on some lessons in the workbook On page 8 of the student workbook, please note that Mr. Jean Chretien is no longer our Prime Minister. Be sure to write your letter to the correct Prime Minister! Lesson 15 is a wonderful activity! I encourage you to make a large poster of your family motto and rules and display it prominently in the house!! Lesson 16 asks you to take steps to change a school rule. Consider changing it to a family rule or community rule that may need to be changed (church rule?). Lesson 24 discusses reducing youth crime

Extra activities: Consider beginning each unit with discussion. For example, to begin the unit on government discuss how your family is governed. Who makes decisions? Who made the mandate for your family? Who makes the rules? For the unit on law, discuss household rules and what happens when those rules are broken. For the unit on citizenship, discuss what it means to be a part of a family. What are the responsibilities each member has? What are the benets of being in a family? What are some disadvantages? http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/primeministers/kids/ index-e.html is a good website. A lesson plan is copied from this site and included in this guide, along with a crossword in the student packet.

http://www.coryscourthouse.ca/ is a website created to help children who need to go to court for whatever reason; however, it is a cool interactive site for understanding Canadas court system. Read a folktale such as Goldilocks, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs, etc, and write up a defense for the characters that have done wrong. Or you can take the side of the crown and prove that the offender is guilty. Consider playing out your job as lawyer in front of a judge (mom or dad!). If you wish to have a jury, ask siblings and friends to be a part of it. http://canada.gc.ca/ is the Canadian government website. It has news updates and issues Canadians are facing. Use this to open discussions with your child. This is also a good launch for lessons. http://www.gov.bc.ca/ is the BC government website that maybe used in
the same way as the Canadian government site.
