Personnel: We were short of staff this week with several employees out sick or on vacation. Detectives: Detectives conducted follow-up investigations to a burglary that had been reported at a residence on Avenue C. Patrol: A Cloquet resident came to the Police Department and dropped off a military ordnance shell. Officer Reed immediately isolated the shell and contacted the proper authorities. On Friday, the Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to the police department where the item was determined to be non-active or inert. They then removed the shell for proper disposal. It is not uncommon for residents to drop off old military ordinance, old bullets or other possible explosives at the Police Department. The safer protocol would be to leave suspicious and possibly dangerous items where they are found, and have police/fire personnel respond to determine the best method of disposal.

Miscellaneous: At Tuesdays Council meeting, the Police Department was requested to step up their enforcement efforts of the pedestrian cross walks. This message was provided to staff in an effort to help ensure the safety of our residents when crossing the streets of Cloquet. I have also provided Jim Prusak with a contact that might provide possible resources to help with the painting of crosswalks. I also contacted Carlton County Humans Services after I learned that they have had some success in receiving state grant funding for pedestrian/transportation projects. I hope to have the Police Department partner with them during the next grant cycle. Law Enforcement Study: A considerable amount of time was spent trying to coordinate the participants for the upcoming meetings for the study. Things seem to be coming together as requested by UMCPI. If you have any questions about the information provided, feel free to contact me at the Police Department. Respectfully Submitted, Wade Lamirande Chief of Police
