So then, each of us shall give account of himself to God. -Romans 14:12 NKJV
1. Type of Literature: Epistle (letter of instruction to the Christian Church) 2. Preliminary conclusion/insight: Man is accountable to God for his own sins. 3. Is there something mentioned before and or after the passage under review that can help in the understanding of the passage itself? From the very first verse of chapter 14, the Apostle Paul sets the stage, or the context of this chapter. Paul is correcting and rebuking (2 Timothy 4:2; Titus 2:15; Hebrews 12:6) the Church at Rome and admonishing them not to have disputes over doubtful things. He asks them questions like: Who are you to judge anothers servant? In verses 10 and 11 Paul says; Why do you judge your brother? or Why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written; as I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me; and every tongue shall confess to God. We see here, Paul rebuking the Roman Christians for condemning, or judging one another in matters of personal spirituality, something that is the providence of God and God alone. He asserts that mankind must ultimately answer to God by quoting Isaiah 45:23 in verse 11, when he says; For it is written ... Every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 4.
