NGN involves three main architectural changes that need to be looked at separately:
NGN implies a consolidation of several (dedicated or overlay) transport networks each historically built for a different service into one core transport network (often based on IP and Ethernet).
In the wired access network, NGN implies the migration from the dual system of legacy voice next to x-DSL setup in local exchanges to a converged setup in which the DSLAMs integrate voice ports or VoIP, making it possible to remove the voice switching infrastructure from the exchange
NGN convergence implies migration of constant bit rate voice to Cable Labs Packet Cable standards that provide VoIP and SIP services. Both services ride over DOCSIS as the cable data layer standard.

Protocol (IP) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). At the application level, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) seems to be taking over from ITU-T H.323. Initially H.323 was the most popular protocol, though its popularity decreased in the "local loop" due to its original poor traversal of Network address translation (NAT) and firewalls.
What Do We Know? NGN Service Characteristics 1. Ubiquitous, real-time, multi-media communications 2. More personal intelligence distributed throughout the network 3. More network intelligence distributed throughout the network 4. More simplicity for users
What Dont We Know? 1. Specialized resource services 2. Processing and storage services 3. Middleware services 4. Application-specific services 5. Content provision services that provide or broker information content 6. Interworking services for interactions with other types of applications, services, networks, protocols, or formats.
Why are NGNs important for service providers? - Public network carriers should (and must) pursue NGNs to offer value-added services. This will be their new strategic Differentiator!
What are the most important trends, characteristics, and specific services in an NGN Environment? Although it is difficult to predict what the next killer applications will be,this paper lists service characteristics and capabilities that will be important in the NGNEnvironment based on service-related industry trends.
What attributes should a Next Generation Service Architecture possess? - One of the primary goals of NGNs is to provide a common, unified, and flexible service architecturethat can support multiple types of services and management applications over multipletypes of transport.
Points To Ponder:
Issues to be kept in mind while planning for NGN deployment Latency (delay) Jitter Bandwidth Packet loss Reliability Security Inter-operability
Multiple services Dynamic VPN Gaming and other real-time applications Differentiated service offerings Enterprise and residential services Conversational VoIP & video IPTV and content streaming Bandwidth on demand
New services and business models Speed to market (voice, video, data, etc) Increased network efficiency Increased operational efficiency Reduced MPLS provisioning End-to-end Qos
