March 15 - Munny Sokol Park -Our next organized trip is to Tuscaloosa for a Sunday ride. The group is to meet at the McDonald's off of 1-459 in Bessemer, exit 6 (Morgan Rd.) at 9:00 am with a 9:30 departure. Look inside for ~details on the park and upcoming race. LAST MONTH all riders in the group rides enjoyed beautiful weather and a great time. Steve and Mark may not agree that the rides were so great, but everyone else did. The Oak Mountain ride had a good turnout. The Ocoee Ride included camping. Everyone enjoyed it so much another one is being considered in the near future. If you missed the last one, make sure to catch the next one. The weather again cooperated, and the "Ocoee ride was AWESOME" to quote our great President. See more on the ride inside. And give a special thanks to the officers for organizing the ride.

The Place: Munny Sokol is located to the west of Tuscaloosa, AL. From Birmingham, head south towards Tuscaloosa on 20/59. Exit McFarland / Hwy 82, exit 73. Go right on 82 West 5 to 6 miles to Munny Sokol sign. Turn Right on Watermelon Road. Go 2 miles and the park is on the right (after the Homer Dome). From the Hoover area, the drive takes about an hour and is roughly 60 miles. The Trails: The trails are predominantly single track. The ride is over pine straw and river bed gravel making for a smooth ride. The trails do not have significant elevation change, but where the park lacks in altitude, it makes up for in trail quality. All trail sections are filled with continuous twists, turns, switchbacks, etc. The map shows how the trail is patterned, and its twisting details. The general terrain is gently rolling without significant rock formations or obstacles. All total, the trails combine for 5.5 - 6 miles of very enjoyable fast paced riding. A portion of the trails are for the upcoming race as noted on the map. The Ride: Trail access is from several trail heads. All of the trails are essientially connected in the loops shown. The paths are marked with arrows, and are not distinguished with color markings or any other features. Combined with the trail layout, the surrounding open fields are good landmarks and can keep one from getting lost. No drinking water exists on the trail, so come prepared. Future Park Plans: Local clubs maintain the trials well and are continuously adding new sections. The park also features ball diamonds and a horse arena. Thanks to Colin, Melanie, and Shawn of Cycle Path for assistance in creating the map. Trails are approximate and not necessarily to scale.

It was a great Saturday morning, it was sunny in the mid 50's it was a great day to hit the trail. We had about eight people show up for the BUMP ride. We hooked up with another group of mountain bikers, in all there was about twenty riders. This was so much fun, I have never rode through the trails with so many bikers. Then it happened, it was the bridge before rocky garden, I did not pull my front wheel up high ~nough, I fell forward then to the right and threw my fight arm out instinctively to soften the impact. My right arm felt numb and I started to stand up. I then felt this enormous amount of pain in my right arm, I then looked over at my arm, it was swollen and deformed. I then became dizzy and nauseated. There was so many great people who helped me out when I broke my arm. Jennifer, who was behind me, helped me lay down, and she lifted my arm to slow the swelling. Matt Morrow who works at Cahaba Cycles (and stUdying for his EMT Certification) sacrificed his spare inner tube to create a splint to stabilize my arm. Rick O'Hara gave some of his water as I felt so dehydrated. There are so many other great people who helped me, I just cannot remember all their names. Someone put a blanket over me, someone was checking my pulse, someone called for an ambulance. Anne Traeger and Derrick Says took care of my bike and met me at the hospital. Jeff Wade, who I just met during this ride, gave me a call a couple of days after my accident to find out how I was doing. I am originally from Massachusetts. I have lived in Alabama for the last twelv~ years. The people in Alabama so friendly, outgoing and caring. Most of the people who helped out that Saturday did not even know me. I just want to say thank you, thank you for taking care of me.
