Kentuck Ride
By PresidentJOE COTLIN It was a Sundayride. I met up with the rest of the BUMPgang at Cracker Barrel in Anniston. We motored to the Kentuck ORV pai'king lot. lt ws a beautiful day, dry, dusty, and perfect for fast paced cruising. Everybodygot out of their dirt encrusted cars and pulledtheir dirt encrustedbikesoff and got ready for a fun ride! We had two new members ridingwith us for the first time, Bernadette Petersand Paul Brookes. The ride started off fast with everyone enjoying Kentuck's wide trail, smooth jumps and speedy berms. Joel disappeared around a turnand I heard an 'AHHHHH'.I came around and Joel was sideways in the mud (eventhoughit was a dry day!!). That'sKentuck for ya! There was anotherincident with Bernadette havingmultiple malfunctions. She survived the mishap. We skippedthe upper loop (thank goodness!).The lower loop was enough for everybody. All in all we had a greattime, everyone is well and we shallrideagain!

One of the most frequently asked questions we get for Biking Oddities is: "What will happen if I swallow a spider white iding on the trails?"Well,we have set out to answer this mystery. Accordingto American folklore regarding an old lady's experience, it depends upon a specific sequence of events that occur before and after the actual spider is ingested. lf you first consumed a fly, then you swallowed a spider (that will wiggle and jiggle and tickle inside you) to catch the fly, perhaps you'll die. lf you then srallow a bird (how absurd) to catch the spider, to catch the fly, perhaps you'll die. Now the story continues with cats, dogs, and even a cow. However I don't think those are encountered on the trails. But, if you swallow a horse (multi use trail), you will die of course. Another source of informationfurther emphasizes the possibilityof severe harm. According to Ms. Becky Edwards of the Alabama Poison control Center, should the spider bite on the way down the esophagus, treatment should be sought. This bite would be no different than one on the skin, and common treatments exist. However, if the spider reaches the stomach, the fluids should quickly kill the arthropod, and only minor discomfort may exist. Ms. Edwards stated that the Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders are present in Alabama and may cause serious harm. An allergic reaction could occur with any spider bile. lf you feel you have ingesteda dangerousspider or any other and are allergicto them, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-462-0800 or a local medicalfacility. And perhapsyou won't die.
