Time Mon 9:30am-10:30am Dates Sept. 16 ~ Dec. 2 Teacher Pastor Travis Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House BF Are you interested in learning more about Christianity? Or in how Christianity influences American culture and society? Pastor Travis has decades of experience as a Christian leader and teacher. He is senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansing. He also has extensive experience working with Internationals. This class will give you important insights into Christianity, whether or not you are Christian yourself. He is warm, very friendly, funny, wise and most willing to help improve your English and build your level of English comprehension.

Bible Study

Time Mon 10:30am-12:00pm Dates Sept. 9 ~ Dec. 9 Rachel, Alix & Katie Level All levels welcome Location Friendship House 2F Teacher This class for International parents and their young children (up to age 4) meets each Monday morning for two delightful hours of free play, crafts, learning English and music education. Also included are games, puzzles, sing-a-longs, basic musical instruments, holiday parties, special snacks and other children's' activities. The class creates just the right environment for learning, laughter and friendship.

Time Mon 10:30am-12:00pm Dates Sept. 9 ~ Dec. 9 Teacher Rich & Cristian Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 1F A great way to practice English conversation and understand American culture is to learn from the experts. This class brings in a new English-speaking American expert each week. They start with a presentation about their field of expertise and then International students engage them in questions, discussion and comparisons with their own culture. Experts will come from the ranks of media, politics, education, business, sports, law, American culture, technology and much more.

Time Mon 12:15pm-1:30pm Dates Sept. 9 ~ Dec. 9 Becky Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 1F Teacher Genesis is the first book of the Christian Old Testament in the Bible and is the main focus of this class. This book describes the origin of the world, the rise of humanity, the Great Flood, the revealing of Gods Ten Commandments, the need for salvation by all the worlds people and foretells the need for Jesus Christ as that salvation and embodiment of Gods love. Select passages of the New Testament will also be shared to show that Jesus was sent by God the Father to fulfill His promise. Students will practice reading the Bible as written in English, including studying pronunciation and vocabulary.

Time Mon 1:30 pm-3:00pm Dates Sept. 9 ~ Dec. 9 Annette Level All levels welcome Teacher Location Friendship House 2F Learning English is closely linked to understanding American culture. The culture of the United States is primarily Western, but is also influenced by Native American, African, Asian, Polynesian, Middle Eastern and Latin American cultures. Many English words and expressions are taken from the history, incredible diversity and unique traditions that make up American culture and society. This class helps International students better understand and apply American culture to their daily lives. Students with young children are very welcome to attend.

English Conversation & American Culture

Time Mon 7:00pm-8:30pm Dates Sept. 9 ~ Dec. 9 Teacher Cesar Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 1F This class will show Internationals how to speak daily English, improve their English listening and speaking skills, and build their vocabulary of commonly used English words. Teacher Cesar is an International himself who mastered English conversation over the past 10 years. He is a graduate of a U.S. university and learned to speak English using ESL classes. He understands what it is like to be a newly-arrived International in the United States.

How Internationals Learn English

Time Mon 1:30 pm-3:00pm Dates Oct. 21~Dec. 16 Gladys Level Intermediate & above Location Friendship House BF Teacher The TOEFL iBT test measures an Internationals ability to use and understand English at the university level. It evaluates how well students combine listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. Friendship House MSU is pleased to bring back this class to help students prepare for the TOEFL. Teacher Gladys taught this class to Internationals beginning last January after many months of preparation and study. She has prepared many materials, practice tests and directed discussions to help TOEFL-bound students maximize their test score. This class is limited to the first 10 students who register online. NOTE: This class begins Monday October 21. This class will take a break in mid- December but will resume in January 2014 with the same students.

Time Tue 9:30am-11:00am Dates Sept. 3 ~ Dec. 17 All levels welcome Teacher Tom & Kathy Level Location Friendship House 1F This class is for International students who want to learn English conversation in a comfortable, relaxing and fun environment. Teachers Tom and Kathy are both retired teachers with over 70 years of U.S. teaching experience between them. The class will study maps, travel guides and cultural and historical attractions of both Michigan and the U.S. Students will also learn about being wise consumers while in the U.S. as well as the best, least expensive places to dine and shop in the Greater Lansing area. Students are encouraged to laugh and learn in equal amounts.

Casual English Conversation

Time Tue 11:00am-12:30pm Dates Sept. 3 ~ Dec. 17 All levels welcome Teachers Tom & Kathy Level Location Friendship House 1F The purpose of this class is get International students out into the communities of East Lansing, Michigan State University and Okemos where English conversation is used in many different ways. Students get plenty of fresh air and exercise through biking, hiking, walking, golf and other activities. Museum visits and short trips to local attractions also take place. Most classes involve an activity away from Friendship House (some classes are held inside due to weather).

Time Tue 1:00pm-2:30pm Dates Sept. 3 ~ Dec. 10 Teacher Maryam & Sara Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 2F In this semester we are going to improve you listening skills by bringing some TV shows and daily or academic conversations and lectures. We also have planned to play some music from popular singers with their transcripts, which are easy to understand. Simultaneously, we will introduce you many new vocabularies and common expressions. If we have extra minutes, we will speak together about familiar topics, like telling a short story of our experiences.

Time Wed 9:30am-11:00am Dates Sept. 4 ~ Dec. 4 Janine Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 2F Teacher International students will learn useful vocabulary to impress their family, friends and even college professors. To improve students ability and confidence to speak English freely, the class will use a variety of techniques to get them talking and build their listening comprehension. Some of the techniques include pronunciation exercises, games, contests, short stories, debates, interviews, idioms and grammar. The main idea is to get students active in their own, individual English practice and use.

English Vocabulary, Reading & Speaking

Time Wed 10:00am-11:30am Dates Sept. 4 ~ Dec. 4 Clyde Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House BF Teacher This watercolor class is limited to only 5 students and deals with a basic understanding of color, value relationships, design and techniques, using watercolor books by professional artists the teacher (a professional water color artist himself) has used to develop his own painting style. With each student receiving significant individual attention, they will eventually design and paint their own pictures. At the end of the semester, the teacher will matt and frame one painting from each student. There is a fee of $40 to attend this class which covers the cost of painting materials. Need-based scholarships are available.

Time Wed 12:00pm-1:30pm Dates Sept. 4 ~ Dec. 18 Ken Level Low intermediate & above Location University Lutheran Church Teacher Internationals sometimes think that learning English is an extremely challenging experience. But, the truth is that learning and using English in conversation can be a fun, rewarding and greatly interesting thing to do. This class proves -- through building students abilities to describe, form questions, do interviews and more -- that English conversation can be successfully learned, remembered and used during the students stay in the United States. English vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation are emphasized in this class. Students are given many opportunities each week to practice their "second" language.

Time Wed 6:00pm-7:30pm Dates Aug. 28 ~ Dec. 11 Dave Level Low intermediate & above Location Martin Luther Chapel Teacher Many Internationals discover that paying attention to the news U.S. and world news alike is an excellent way to improve their English vocabulary, comprehension and practice. Newspapers, cable news, online news websites and blogs, and magazines really help Internationals grow their English conversation skills and start learning the patterns of speech that are so important to their second language. This long-running class has been popular with Internationals for many years.

Time Thu 10:00am-11:30am Dates Sept. 5 ~ Dec. 12 Clyde Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 2F Teacher For this Bible class, students study the subject of Who is Jesus? By knowing the answer to that question, they learn how that changes everything about how we live our lives, from personal relationships, to dealing with stress and worry, to knowing where we came from and where we will eventually end up. Devotional materials are used that address a specific area of everyday life, and then apply the teachings of Jesus as found in the Bible, to understand the help He provides so that we can live peaceful, joyful lives.

Time Thu 10:30am-12:00pm Dates Sept. 19 ~ Dec. 19 Mary Lou Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 1F Teacher The class features helpful topics with opportunities to practice speaking and writing in English. Editing assistance will be offered with suggestions for fluency and TOEFL success. Teacher Mary Lou incorporates many forms of teaching media in her classes to maximize the learning experience of International students. Fresh new topics for the fall semester make this class especially stimulating. This is a long-running class which, because of its warm, friendly and inviting atmosphere and proven success in helping Internationals become more confident with their English, is a favorite among our students year after year.

Time Thu 1:00pm-2:30pm Dates Sept. 19 ~ Dec. 19 Mary Lou Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 1F Teacher Amazing stories from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible will form the core of this inspiring course. Questions and discussion will always be welcome. Important lessons for happy, victorious living will be gleaned from each story. Students will take turns reading passages and build their English vocabulary while learning about Christianity.

Time Thu 7:00pm-8:30pm Dates Aug. 29 ~ Dec. 19 Teacher Dick Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 1F The Gospel according to Matthew, the first book of the New Testament Bible, will be the focus of this class. The book describes the coming of Jesus into the world 2,000 years ago, His baptism, and how the Son of God sends the disciples to preach His Gospel to the whole world, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus miracles on earth are described as are His crucifixion resurrection from the dead. The application of Jesus words and life to all people everywhere is a major part of the class discussion.

Bible Study

Time Thu 2:30pm-4:00pm Dates Sept. 12 ~ Dec. 5 Tim Level Intermediate Teacher Location Friendship House 2F This is a new class at Friendship House MSU and is taught by a recently retired English writing professor. In this class, students will learn about a variety of English language topics, including formal and informal language (idioms, slang), troublesome prepositions, articles, verbs, common spelling (homonym) errors, sentence structure, and the basics of punctuation. The class will provide students with many opportunities to practice through discussion, exercises that illustrate these topics, and occasional short writings. This class is limited to the first 12 students who register online.

Writing & Speaking in English

Time Fri 12:00pm-1:30pm Dates Sept. 6 ~ Dec. 6 Pastor Rich Level Low intermediate & above Location University Lutheran Church Teacher This is a new class to the Friendship House MSU schedule and it will address what Internationals want to know about how U.S. history affects American culture and vice versa. Pastor Rich is an accomplished teacher and he will guide students to an insiders view of select portions of American history and how those events, decisions and milestones influenced our society. Students will build their English vocabulary, improve their pronunciation and become much more aware of how the American people think and function.

Time Fri 10:30am-12:00pm Dates Sept. 13 ~ Dec. 13 Teacher Jodi Level Low intermediate & above Location Friendship House 2F Teacher Jodi's Bible study will focus on a portion of the New Testament called Galatians. The class will discuss the themes of this book, how they relate to Christianity, other religions and our daily lives. Jodi infuses the Bible study with helpful English tips and lessons, too. Students have enjoyed her fun, interactive teaching style at the Friendship House MSU for more than 4 years now. As always, students do not need to be Christian to attend (or learn!).

Time Fri 1:00pm-2:30pm Dates Sept. 13 ~ Dec. 6 Teacher Wei, Cheryl and Seonmi Level All levels welcome Location Friendship House 1F ISC (International Spouse Connection) is a group for, and organized by, International spouses. They share their cultures, life stories and interests. Spouses practice English while talking about different topics every week. There is usually lots of humor and always lasting friendships. All International spouses and all conversation levels are welcome.

This class will use the Book of Acts from the New Testament Bible. Acts tells the story of the Early Christian church, especially the apostles Simon Peter and Paul of Tarsus. The early chapters discuss Jesus' Resurrection, His Ascension, the Day of Pentecost, and the start of the apostles' ministry. The later chapters discuss Paul's conversion to Christianity, his ministry, and finally his arrest, imprisonment, and trip to Rome. A major theme of the book is the expansion of the Holy Spirit's work from the days after Jesus ascension into what is today Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

This class will focus on the Ten Commandments which are a set of biblical principles relating to ethics and worship, which play a fundamental role in Christianity, Islam and Judaism. They include instructions to worship only God and to keep the Sabbath, and prohibitions against idolatry, blasphemy, murder, theft, dishonesty, and adultery. The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Christian Bible and Hebrew Torah, and are also referenced more generally in the Koran. Teacher Don is a retired MSU professor and long-time Friendship House MSU teacher.

The conversation among students not only flows freely, it serves as the core of this long-running and respected class. Teaching tools like analogy (comparisons), idioms (slang) and International cultural similarities and differences are frequently used. In addition to increasing English proficiency, the class uses seasonal recipes, national holidays, Michigan products, and points of historical and scenic interest in our state.

English Conversation, Vocabulary & Pronunciation (2)

English Conversation Partners Available Friendship House has volunteer tutors willing to assist International students with their English conversation one-on-one. Our supply of tutors is limited. Partners are assigned after an individual assessment with each International student. After assignment, the tutor and student will arrange their own meeting schedule.
