Greetings Sorors, Greetings, Sorors and Amicae, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., will host its annual 2013 Zeta Day on the Hill in Washington, DC. The activity coincides with the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference where Zetas and Amicae will convene on Capitol Hill to learn about key social action programs, congressional updates, and share our concerns about maternal child health, bullying, and elder abuse prevention with government leaders. Since Zetas founding in 1920, the sorority has been at the forefront of social change. Members such as Past International Grand Basileus Violette N. Anderson who was the first Black woman to practice before the Supreme Court, set a high standard for our involvement in public policy. Zeta Day on the Hill is designed to help members understand and implement social action programs and the policy associated with the service projects performed nationally. I encourage you to stay in Washington, DC throughout the Congressional Black Caucus Foundations 43rd Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) from September 18-21, and participate in the brain trusts and networking functions. It is important for Zeta to be represented among the nations leaders at this premier conference on legislative and policy issues impacting the African-American community. I look forward to working with you as we build on the principles of Zeta while blazing new paths and advocate for our communities, making the world a better place for us all. Zeta Day on the Hill

ESSENTIALS
WHAT TO WEAR It is critical that we present a polished and professional image while on Capitol Hill. The weather in Washington, D.C. might still be warm, and you will be expected to walk several blocks around Capitol Hill to get to the sessions. We will also be taking a photo, so uniformity is important. The attire for Zetas is a royal blue suit (skirt or pants with blazer) with a white top, and royal blue or black shoes and pearls. The attire for Amicae is light blue with royal blue (skirts or pants with a blazer). Please wear comfortable shoes. If you have limited mobility, please bring a cane, walker or motorized aid. WHAT TO EXPECT Visitors will be subject to security screenings for each building and need to allow for time to be processed. Expect long lines and waiting. We are asking sorors and Amicae to be patient and allow 5-10 minutes to get to each of your appointments based on location. WHAT TO CARRY Due to security measures, we ask that you limit the amount of items you carry to the Zeta Day on the Hill event. Some government buildings do not allow liquids, including perfumes and water. Please limit your bag to a small purse or clutch. Please bring a photo ID, and camera to capture memories for the day. You may be able to take a picture with your representative that can be featured in your local chapter newsletter, regional newsletter or local paper. WHAT TO DO The Congressional Black Caucus will be held in Washington, D.C. from September 18-21. There are several workshops and social events held during the conference. Parking in D.C. and on Capitol Hill can be scarce and difficult to find. Parking tickets are quickly dispensed and expensive. The subway system (called Metrorail or just Metro by many) is convenient and easy to use. Understanding the Policy Behind our Programs

Breakout Session 1: Bullying , Sonya Clay, Assistant Director of Federal Affairs, American Academy of Pediatrics. Every 30 minutes a teenager attempts suicide due to bullying. Ms. Clay will provide a legislative update and history on bullying issues and how chapters can effectively implement activities, integrate social action on this issue into their current work, and educate and advocate on this important issue. 325 Russell Senate Office Building Breakout Session 2: Maternal Child Health- Cindy Pellegrini, Senior Vice President for Public Policy & Government Affairs, March of Dimes. In the United States, 1 in 9 babies is born prematurely. Ms. Pellegrini will provide a legislative update and history on prematurity and maternal child health policy, and how chapters can effectively implement activities, integrate social action into their current work, and educate and advocate on this important issue. Rayburn Gold Room Breakout Session 3: Elder Abuse Prevention-Mary Twomey and Bob Blancato, Ageless Alliance. More than half of African-American caregivers find themselves sandwiched between caring for an older person, a younger person under age 18, and caring for more than one older person. The Ageless Alliance will provide a legislative update and history on elder abuse prevention issues and how chapters can effectively implement activities, integrate them into their current programming, educate, and advocate on this important issue. PRESENTERS
Krysta N. Jones has committed her life to public service, developing leaders and changing lives. In 2006, Krysta identified a need and founded Virginia Leadership Institute, Inc., which has trained over 200 Black future political candidates and leaders. She has served as a co-convener for the Northern Virginia Coalition, which has registered, educated and empowered thousands of voters. Krysta is the Outreach Director for Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) where she serves as a community liaison, and successfully represented two associations for eight years as a registered lobbyist. At the American Psychological Association, she drafted legislation on healthy media for youth and convened a national coalition and forum with experts to discuss the negative effects of sexualization on women and girls. Ms. Jones holds a bachelors degree from the University of Florida and a masters degree from The George Washington University. She is a graduate of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership Class of 2006, Leadership Arlington Class of 2010 and the National Urban Fellows Americas Leaders of Change Class of 2011. Krysta was initiated into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Mu Epsilon Chapter at the University of Florida in 1998. She is the immediate past president of the Nu Xi Zeta Chapter in Alexandria, VA. Minister Teraleen R. Campbell resides in Prince Georges County, Maryland She has been a member of Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church since 1991; where the Pastors are Bishop Alfred Owens, Jr. and Co-Pastor Susie Owens. The March of Dimes and the American Red Cross have recognized her for her involvement and service to the community. Additionally, she was named Sorority Woman of the Year during the annual Sister-to-Sister Sorority Luncheon, hosted by Taylor Thomas of WHUR Radio. She also was recognized by her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta when she received the inaugural Zeta of the Year Award in April 2004. She became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in May of 1989 via the Eta Epsilon Chapter at the University of Maryland, where she conducted her undergraduate studies. She is a charter member of the Tau Delta Zeta Chapter in Laurel, Maryland; having served in several positions such as Treasurer, Member-atLarge, Z-HOPE Coordinator and Membership Intake CoCoordinator. She has also served Zeta on the national level as the Atlantic Region representative to the March of Dimes WalkAmerica Team under the administration of Dr. Barbara West Carpenter. She is a member of the Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women , President of a local club for Toastmasters Intl. Additionally, Minister Campbell currently serves as Maryland State Phylacter and Social Action Coordinator for the Atlantic Region of Zeta. Zeta Day on the Hill

PRESENTERS
Monica Reid currently serves as a Legislative Assistant/ Analyst for Fairfax Countys Government Relations Department and Man- ager for the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce (NVBCC). She is a recent graduate of George Mason University with a Masters in Public Administration and a B.A. in Government & International Politics and Economics. She has a passion for politics, which has led her to volunteer for a number of local, statewide and national political campaigns. Monica has served as Secretary and Co-Chair of the African American Caucus for the Springfield District Democratic Committee. She also chairs the Social Action committee for the Alexandria, VA Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., serves on the Board for the Virginia Leadership Institute (VLI) as Candidate Recruitment Vice President and is the Convener for the Northern Virginia (NOVA) Coalition. The NOVA Coalition is a nonpartisan effort created to register, educate and empower voters in Northern Virginia, and to promote policies of interest to the African-American community.

Bob Blancato is President of Matz Blancato and Associates, a firm providing a wide array of Washington representational services for clients. He is the National Coordinator of the 3000 member Elder Justice Coalition. He serves as Executive Director of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs. Bob has more than 20 years of federal government service in the Congressional and Executive branches including 13 years on the senior staff of the House Select Committee on Aging and an appointment by President Clinton to be the Executive Director of the 1995 White House Conference on Aging. Bob is currently on the Boards of the American Society on Aging and the National Council on Aging. He holds a BA from Georgetown University and an MPA from American University. Bob has won numerous awards for advocacy including the Arthur Flemming Award and in 2011 he was knighted by the Italian Republic for his commitment to the relationship between the United States and Italy. Most recently, in December 2012 Bob was reappointed to the Commonwealth Council on Aging by Governor Bob McDonnell for a 4 year term. In January 2013, Bob was selected to be the Volunteer State President of AARP in Virginia for a 2 year term.

Sonya Clay, Assistant Director of Federal Affairs, is a government affairs professional specializing in budget and social policy. Ms Clay has worked in policy advocacy for nearly 20 years where she served in on various legislative offices within the U.S. House of Representatives including serving as Legislative Director to Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Legislative Assistant to Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD). In addition, she has years of experience advocating for municipal clients and non-profits on health, education, social service and consumer issues. In addition, she spent five years as an advocate for reproductive health and rights issues, most notably for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She has been successful in increasing federal funding for global HIV/AIDS, juvenile justice, community development and health research initiatives. Prior to joining the AAP, she worked as a consultant for the Womens Media Center, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the American Anthropological Association. She joined the American Academy of Pediatrics Department of Federal Affairs in October, 2011 where she handles policies relating to federal appropriations, bioethics, child abuse and neglect, early childhood, environmental health, foster care, global health, injury prevention, nutrition and obesity. Cynthia Pellegrini is Senior Vice President for Public Policy and Government Affairs at the March of Dimes. In this capacity, Ms. Pellegrini oversees all March of Dimes advocacy efforts at the federal level and in all 50 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Key March of Dimes policy priorities include access to health care for all women of childbearing age and children; research into prematurity, birth defects, and other aspects of reproductive and child health and development; and prevention and health promotion issues. Ms. Pellegrini will begin a 4-year term on the CDCs Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices in July 2013 and currently represents the March of Dimes on the National Quality Forums National Priorities Partnership. She also serves on the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaboratives Patients, Families & Consumers Center leadership cabinet. She speaks regularly for the March of Dimes before entities such as the Secretarys Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality. Prior to joining March of Dimes, Ms. Pellegrini served as Associate Director for Federal Affairs at the American Academy of Pediatrics, where she covered a range of issues including genetics, bioethics, child abuse and neglect, environmental health, nutrition, obesity, and injury and violence.

Mary Twomey, MSW is the Co-director of the Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect at the University of California, Irvine. Before coming to UCI, Mary was director of the San Francisco Consortium for Elder Abuse Prevention, a program of the Institute on Aging from 20002007. Formerly, she was director of Social Services at the Volunteer Legal Services Program of the Bar Association of San Francisco. She spent eleven years with the national office of AARP in Washington, DC where she coordinated the National Guardianship Monitoring Program. Mary has her MSW with a concentration in gerontology and mental health from Catholic University in Washington, DC.

Hilary 0. Shelton, presently serves as the Vice President for Advocacy/Director to the NAACPs Washington Bureau. The Washington Bureau is the Federal legislative and national public policy division of the over 500,000- member, 2,200- membership unit, national civil rights organization. In this capacity, Hilary is responsible for advocating the federal public policy issue agenda of the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized civil rights organization in the United States to the U.S. Government. Hilarys government affairs portfolio includes crucial issues such as affirmative action, equal employment protection, access to quality education, stopping gun violence, ending racial profiling, abolition of the death penalty, access to comprehensive healthcare, voting rights protection, federal sentencing reform and a host of civil rights enforcement, expansion and protection issues.

Chonya Johnson, Americas Ultimate Advocate, is a savvy entrepreneur, widely known for her work in politics as a Government Affairs Consultant, legislative aide and district director to several US Members of Congress. Chonya Johnson has a genuine passion for helping people excel. Beyond her involvement with National Executive Youth Leadership Summit at the United States Capitol, Chonya expanded her efforts in 2012, and authored three books: the Leadership Factor: 8 Factors for Cultivating Young Leaders, Positive Affirmations for Success for Increasing Self- Esteem and Confidence and The 5-Minute Advocate: Access Granted - Tips for Effective Advocacy & Engagement. She was a Washington Post endorsed candidate for the Board of Education in Prince Georges County, Maryland in 2010 and has received numerous awards and accolades for her service and commitment. She is a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Circle of Champions, American Society of Training and Development, Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and other notable organizations where she frequently volunteers her services Today, she is a sought after federal government affairs consultant, speaker and trainer, who encourage associations, community groups, and everyday citizens to use the 5 Minute Advocate steps to get the results they want and desire in any situation.
