OVERVIEW

From the day you arrive on campus, you are a UMass Boston student. Simply put, Navitas provides the academic and cultural soft landing to help you acclimate into a new education system and a new city.

UMass Boston: the Navitas advantage


The international pathway program consists of for-credit and other noncredit support courses which provide an academic bridge from your high school experience to studying in a university degree program in the United States. Upon successful completion of your Navitas program, you will progress to year 2 of your degree studies, earning UMass Boston credits from day one.

Be a UMass Boston student from day one.


Earn 30 credits (up to 10 course modules) of your UMass Boston degree and Year 2 standing. Have your coursework and academic standing recorded on the universitys transcripts.

Receive a packaged English + Academic visa that lasts for the entire duration of study (up to 5 years). No reapplication to the university or visa transfer when you enter Year 2. Be eligible to work through academic internships (CPT) and full-time for one year after graduation (OPT).

Navitas at UMass Boston offers an alternative pathway to UMass Boston for international students who may not qualify for direct entry to a UMass undergraduate or graduate degree and/or who seek a supportive study environment.

Your pathway to UMass Boston


The Navitas undergraduate program is equivalent to the first year of a UMass Boston bachelor degree program. All credit courses are UMass Boston first-year degree courses, taught by UMass Boston faculty. Upon successful completion of the Navitas program, you will progress to Year 2 of your degree program, receiving full credit towards your undergraduate degree. Navitas students are UMass Boston students from day one. The Navitas Pre-Masters Program (PMP) prepares students for graduate degree courses and programs. Subject to meeting university requirements, students can commence their graduate coursework during the Navitas PMP.

Flexible admission:
three intakes per year with the option to begin in September, January, or May all applicants screened within 24-48 hours with a conditional admission decision no SAT/ACT and no personal statement required

Comprehensive student support:

Program details
This is a 15-week (one semester) Academic English language program. Depending on English entry level, students take one to two semesters of full time English before progressing to Mixed English or UPP. This program combines UPP courses and English language studies. In the first semester, you will take two academic courses plus 15 hours per week of Academic English studies, provided through UMass Boston College of Advancing & Professional Studies. This program is equivalent to the first year of select degree programs at UMass Boston. To progress to the second year of your degree, during the UPP you must complete 10 courses equal to a minimum of 30 credit hours and achieve good academic standing. These courses are usually completed within three semesters (one year). The PMP is a two-semester program designed for students who have completed their bachelors degree and who need or seek additional support to gain entry to the UMass Boston masters program.

Activities and leadership
The Office of Student Activities can help you make the most of your time at UMass Boston by advising you about leadership opportunities outside the classroom. Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) are clubs and organizations funded by undergraduate fees. As an undergraduate student, you are welcome to join any RSO at UMass Boston, or to start a new RSO based on a particular area of interest. Internship and co-op opportunities

Navitas at UMass Boston students who progress to second year, earning a minimum of 30 credits, become eligible to participate in the Internship Program. This provides practical hands-on learning in your area of study or career interest. Most of the internships are part-time and last for one semester. Orientation
Orientation is a series of activities and workshops occurring just prior to the start of your first semester that provides valuable information and assistance to help you make a smooth transition to UMass Boston. Attendance is compulsory for all new students. The Campus Center serves as the living room of the university welcoming students, faculty, staff and visitors. It has stunning views of Boston Harbor and provides student services, nurtures student life, and offers gathering spaces that build and encourage community interaction. The Campus Center hosts most of the social, cultural, and recreational events on campus. Over 100 different student clubs and organizations meet here and plan their activities. If you need a student ID, MBTA pass, discount tickets, or an ATM, youll find it at the Campus Center. There is also a food court dining room and a cafhere.

English skills and academic writingsupport

Being able to communicate effectively and confidently in English is essential to your success at a United States university. In addition to formal academic programs, Navitas at UMass Boston offers comprehensive support courses to improve your skills in English grammar, critical reading and academic writing, listening effectively to lectures, participating in tutorials and discussions, and note-taking. These support courses will also help you develop study skills in areas such as time management and examinationtechniques.
Math support

Take a tour of Boston on board an authentic, renovated World War II amphibious landing vehicle with Boston Duck Tours. Discover Bostons history at the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum. Take the Freedom Trail, Bostons twoand-a-half mile walk through history. Relive the Kennedy era at the John F Kennedy Library and Museum, where you can watch a short film and explore a series of fascinating exhibits. Shop at Quincy Market at Fanueil Hall in downtown Boston, and enjoy the variety of shops, carts, and kiosks. Catch a baseball game at Fenway Park, the oldest Major League baseball park in the United States. New England experiences four distinct seasons with spring, summer and early fall being the most temperate seasons. The universitys English (ESL) Program is designed to help you improve your language proficiency before you begin your studies with Navitas at UMass Boston.
Intakes September, January and May Duration Minimum one semester Program fee: US$5,500 per semester

This full-time course is provided by UMass Boston for students who do not have the required English proficiency test scores to enter directly into the UPP Mixed program. This integrated program focuses on instruction in university study skills, academic writing, and content-based course work typical of a United States university classroom. Course work includes intensive practice in the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The learning process is enhanced through assigned readings and exercises, as well as oral presentation and writing projects. Computer lab time is scheduled, and you will receive basic instruction in research and creating presentations for academic purposes.

Classes take place Monday through Friday between 8.00am and 4.00pm, for a total of 2024 hours per week. After completion of your Intensive English program with UMass Boston, you will not be required to take IELTS/TOEFL. Navitas at UMass Boston students will receive a 5-year I-20 to cover the entire duration of English + degree studies. There is no transfer or re-application process with Navitas.

If you have achieved one of the English test results in the table below, and meet the relevant academic requirement for your country, you will be eligible for direct entry into the UPP. Navitas family bursaries
Navitas offers financial support in the form of family bursaries. A bursary applies where two or more students from the same family study with a Navitas memberinstitution.* The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent of the tuition fee of your program of study (certificate, diploma, University Transfer Program (UTP), University Pathways Program (UPP), bachelors degree, PreMasters Program (PMP), postgraduate qualifying program or masters degree).

What does a scholarship include?

How do I apply?

Pick up an application from the Navitas institution where you have enrolled and submit together with supporting documents such as a birth certificate or family card. These documents will vary depending on the country where you plan to study.
How will I receive my bursary?

Fees for one academic term (or part thereof) at a Navitas member institutionfor: a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (Australia) UTP Stage II or associate degree(Canada) UPP or IUTP (United States) undergraduate pathway program (United Kingdom); or one semester of undergraduate study at ACN, Curtin University Sydney, Curtin Singapore or Macquarie city campus; or one semester of a masters program at Curtin University Sydney, Curtin Singapore or Macquarie city campus.
How do I apply?

Scholarship policy

There is no need to apply all full time enrolled students are automaticallyeligible! The scholarship is based on academic performance the two students with the highest GPA in four or more subjects or courses will each receive a scholarship. If you are successful, you will be notified by mail once end of term results are released. The names of successful students will also be posted on the college website.
How will I receive my scholarship?

If you qualify, then 10 percent of your tuition fee will be credited to your account each academic term. This amount will vary based on the number of units being undertaken. Note that the bursary applies to the first program of study and does not apply to additional units or repeat units that may also beundertaken.

Scholarships are applied to the tuition fee for the second term of enrollment only or the final semester of study in an undergraduate or postgraduate program.

1. Two scholarships for one academic terms tuition are offered at each Navitas member institution.* 2. Where the Academic Assessment Committee must differentiate between equally qualified applicants, additional factors such as educational disadvantage, membership of a specific equity group and/or significantly adverse personal circumstances may be taken into account. 3. Students are eligible to qualify for the scholarships after successful completion of their first term and after commencing their second term. 4. Students can only be awarded the scholarship once. 5. Students already in receipt of a scholarship may not be eligible for the Navitas scholarship. 6. Students are required to pay for any additional courses or subjects or courses undertaken that are over the amount covered by the scholarship. 7.
