While

in

no sense of a martial nature, the Barkers have

ever been found in the front rank of the country's defenders,

when

In the more peaceful paths of civil life the race has been characterized by simplicity of habits, sturdy manhood, and rugged honesty. In every calling the name has been a synonym for sobriety, industry and integrity.

In peace or war, like the Chevalier Bayard, they have evei been sans penr et sans reprocke.
