Preparing for Load Growth Pepco will build a new concrete encased duct bank in the brick alley in the rear of 8 W Street, NW to 74 W Street, NW. The conduit will run approximately 650 feet through 13 existing manholes and will be installed in phases. Construction of the conduit will require that parts of the alley be closed as work is performed . Following completion of the conduit, crews will install secondary conductors. This work is estimated to take six to eight weeks, and is needed due to increased load and community growth which has put stress on the existing infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to begin in the early fall of 2013 with completion targeted for spring 2014. What is a Duct Bank? Duct banks are groups of conduits designed to protect and consolidate cabling to and from buildings. In a duct bank, data and electrical cables are laid out within conduits that are bundled together. They are often buried, allowing contractors to consolidate the wiring for a building into centralized underground paths. Impacts on the Community Pepco will continue to work diligently to minimize the impact of the scheduled work on residents and business owners. We will also continue to provide updates on the work being performed, by block, on a weekly basis. Installation of the conduit will require that parts of the alley behind 8 W Street, NW be closed during construction. We are working to ensure that at least orie of the entrances to the alley remains open during this time.
