FOREWORD
T h e recent receipt o f ma ny letters f r o m s tudents o f var ious se cret schools of the divine sciences, evidencing a deep interest in the occult, the mystic and the hi gh er aspect of the L A W , is, indeed, most gratifying. T he s e l etters show, unmistakably, an awak en i ng a mo n g those interested in t hings spiritual. T h e y indicate a whol esome disposition t o wa r d i ndepend ent investigation to T R Y to test all t hings to take no thi ng f o r g r a n t e d and to know t he t ru th. I f all t hose who are i nt erest ed in t he occult and mystic if all sincere seekers f o r t ru t h and those e nd e av or in g to find the schools, orders, org aniz at io ns and societies t h a t poi nt the W A Y , t h a t deal only with pure white magic a n d guide t hei r s tudents or neophyt es u p w a r d a l on g the p a t h wo ul d only investigate sincerely an d intelli gently investigate the unpre te nt io us claims o f the true and con t ra st them with the bold, seductive and fabulous claims o f false teachers and spurious o rg a n i z a t i o n s if they woul d only l ear n the simple basic distinctions between them-then, indeed, will the d ea th knell have been finally sounded f or those false teac hers and m as t er s who have- beguiled and misled so man y sincere but un i nformed seekers o f the ancient wisdom. T h e n the heyd ay o f the black magicians an d t h ei r spurious o r d e rs and coun ter fei t societies will end. A m o n g the letters received, a large nu mb er ar e f r o m sincere seekers of the t r u t h w h o have been or wh o ar e now m e m be r s of A. M . O. R. C., raising questions bea ri ng directly on the subject m a t t e r covered by this and o t h e r companion booklets. T h e r e f o r e , we deem this a fitting time and o p po rt uni t y to ans wer the questionsso raised. F o r the sake o f brevity, these questions may be covered u nde r two g eneral h ea di ng s: 1. W h y should t h er e be so much cont roversy as to wh o wT as first or last in the re al m o f spiritual science and t r u t h f o r which the Rose Cross s t a nd s ? 2. Ar e not all un d er the L A W and do we not all use the same lawr? T h e r e f o r e , does it m a t t e r so much who teaches the l a w? Yes, indeed, it does m a t t e r w h o teaches the l aw a nd hozv it is

taught . T h e r e ar e two oppos it e aspects o f t he law. T h e law ma y be used f o r g oo d o r f or evil, and in the use and intended use o f the law is the distinction between white and black magi c between real schools o f hi g he r spiritual t ra i n i n g and spurious o r g a n i z a t i o n s using and teaching the l ower aspects o f the s ame law. T h e question is not who was the first to t each the s pi ri tual sci ences t her e ar e no first and no last in the K i n g do m o f T r u t h . T h e real question is: W h ic h teachers and which schools actually t each the spiritual sciences and guide t hei r st udent s o r n eophyt es along the u p w a r d path a nd n a r r o w way t o w a r d the H i g h e r K i n g d o m o f T r u t h , in accordance with the hi ghest and noblest aspects o f the law, a n d which l eaders and which o rg a n iz a t i o n s actually teach the black a r t a nd guide t hei r fol lowers o r mem bp rs a l on g t he d o w n wa rd p at h an d b r oa d way to p er di ti on and destruction, in a cco rd ance with the lowest an d mo st ignoble aspects o f the same l a w ? In short, the real question is: W h i c h ar e t ru e schools o f p u r e white magic l eadi ng the way to life, an d which are spurious, posing as spiritual schools, but nevertheless teachi ng an d pract ici ng t he foul black ar ts l eadi ng the way to d e s t r uc t i o n? T ru l y, this is a serious and f u n d a m e n t a l question o f p r o f o u n d interest to all masters, t eachers a n d leaders, as well as all fol l ow ers, s tudents and neophyt es of all schools, o r d e r s a nd societies o f the G r e a t W h i t e B r o t h e r h o o d . I t is a call to all o f these to band and s t an d a nd fight t o g e t h e r in a c ommon cause f o r t he prot ect ion and in the interest o f all u ni n f o r m e d yet sincere seekers o f the up wa r d path and the n a r r o w way to ligh t lest they be allured, beguiled an d led a s tr a y and di rec ted in t he dowmward p a t h and t aught the l ower aspects of the law by p seudo- mas ters and des ig n ing teachers who seek them f or m er c en ar y reasons o r f o r o t h e r viie p urpos es as m em be r s o f t h ei r d a n g e r o u s a nd spuri ous o r ganizations. W e need not fight f or o ur own o r ga ni zat i on s. Being true, they are secure ag ai ns t all t he furies o f hell and all p o we r s o f the black magicians, but when we do fight in the n am e of a nd f o r the ri ght s of our own t rue school, o r d e r or society against spurious a nd clan destine o r ga ni zat i ons , using its n a m e a nd p u r p o r t i n g to give its teachings, we fight truly in the interests o f and f o r the pro tec ti on of all sincere seekers o f the u p w a r d path and narrow' way t h a t leadeth to the light an d the wisdom. So must every school, o r d e r and society wo rki ng u n d er the sanc tion o f and in accordance with the t eachings o f the G r e a t W h i t e
