News in detail -

Top ZEISS Partners with Tata Consultancy Services for Engineering and Manufacturing Services Source: ARCweb / 8 August 2013 At the onset of the recent financial crisis, the Carl Zeiss Group initiated a group-wide framework agreement with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for engineering services to help reduce costs and support sustainable global business growth. The first step was for the company's various business units to identify which types of its work packages could be outsourced in any form. The company's Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology business unit, for example, determined that it could outsource product development tasks. Industrial Metrology identified that it could outsource selected software development. The Microscopy division, in turn, determined that it could outsource complete development, manufacturing, and supply of an assembly group for microscopes intended for the Indian market. The companies went through a mutual change process, resulting in learning and adaptation on both sides. Today, ZEISS either outsources or uses global delivery for certain product development tasks, some of its software development and testing, and development and manufacturing of specific components. ZEISS and TCS consider the cooperation to be very successful and TCS hopes to expand related activities in the future. Top Outplacement clauses in the Bill could hurt Indian IT (Mr. N.Chandrasekaran, MD and CEO TCS is interviewed.) Source: The Financial Express / 6 August 2013 The US Immigration Bill could hurt Indian software companies, Tata Consultancy Services MD & CEO Natarjan Chandrasekaran believes, even though he points out the final version isnt out yet. Meanwhile, TCS continues to cash in on the good environment and is keeping a closewatchoninnovationsintechnology, which Chandrasekaran feels are going to be rapid in the next few years, requiring IT vendors to be more than agile. He tells Shobhana Subramanian that he finds it difficult to even visualise the kind of work TCS might be doing five years from now, given how dramatic the changes in technology could be. How serious do you think the impact of the US Immigration Bill could be? The Bill, in the form in which it has gone through in the Senate, has tough provisions for companies like ours. The overall quota for H1B visas will be increased, which is good, but provisions like outplacement are tough not just for our business model but also for clients in the US because the ability of companies to service them will be difficult. We do, however, appreciate the need for an Immigration Bill in the US; they have issues to address. From our point of view, the Bill thats in the House is developing and the early version does not have some of the clauses that are of serious concern. There will definitely be some impact in terms of wage hike and visa hikes though that should not be serious. The outplacement clause, however, could be tough; we need to see how the clause is detailed in the Bill. In all these things, the final impact can be assessed only when youre able to correctly interpret the rul es, so the impact could be high.
