Small Business Chemistry in Motion 10 Steps to Business Success


Gianna Arnold: With advanced degrees in science and law and drawing from her experience as a scientist, as an entrepreneur and as a corporate executive, Giannas practice is directed to enhancing company value through protecting, leveraging and enforcing intellectual assets. Gianna is partner with Saul Ewing LLP, where she is a co-chair of the Intellectual Property & Technology practice group. Saul Ewing is a general practice and mid-sized firm with 11 east coast offices. Attorneys of the firm are active leaders and authorities in diverse fields of practice. This range of skill set allows Saul Ewing to provide full-service representation to its clients.

relevant to any research type and/or science discipline. This high level overview will then be followed with brief presentations from each of our panelists.

Jacqueline Allen: Jacqueline concentrates her practice at Saul Ewing LLP in general business and commercial law. She counsels clients in decisions regarding formation of entities, purchases and sales of businesses, loan transactions, private offerings of debt and equity securities, and life science transactions. Jacqueline has experience representing a range of companies, including, start-up companies family-owned companies, privately owned and managed companies, public companies, and nonprofit organizations and provides general counsel to these organizations regarding various day-today corporate and contract matters. Elizabeth Hart-Wells, Assistant Vice-President and Director of the Office of Technology Commercialization. Hart-Wells is responsible for managing the commercialization of Purdue's intellectual property assets which includes responsibility of evaluating innovations, developing commercialization strategies, memorializing commercialization agreements; promoting discovery with delivery; forming startup companies; and overseeing compliance with federal technology regulations. She previously managed the University of Maryland, Baltimore's Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property Group where she oversaw the university's intellectual asset portfolio. She supervised all technology transfer activities, including asset evaluation, patent prosecution, business development, and negotiations with licensees. She also managed the intellectual property for the Middle Atlantic Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, a multi-party

consortium of research institutes supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Hart-Wells served as a Congressional Fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science where she served on the professional legislative staff for the ranking member of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee. She served as a patent agent for Fulbright & Jaworski LLP. She was a research associate for the National Academy of Sciences where she executed policy analysis of postdoctoral programs in academia, government and industry to aid the National Academies' Committee on Science Engineering and Public Policy. Hart-Wells earned a doctorate in chemistry from Rice University where she was a Turner Outstanding Graduate Student in organic chemistry, a Harry B. Weiser Research Scholar and a Robert A. Welch Foundation Fellow. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Indiana University where she was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, the Alpha Lambda Alpha Honor Society and the Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fraternity. She is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the U.S. Patent Office. Rajesh Nair: Rajesh Nairs practice focuses on intellectual property matters involving scientific and technological inventions. In addition to general legal experience, both within law firms and within government, Rajesh holds an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering, a Masters in Chemistry, a Ph.D. in Chemistry, a post-doctoral fellowship and years of experience prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications. Rajesh is a member of Saul Ewing LLPs Intellectual Property and Technology, and Life Sciences practice grou ps, Rajesh directs his practice to patent matters in areas related to chemistry and chemical engineering.

Linda Sivik: Linda M. Sivik is a Senior Patent Agent at The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G), Cincinnati, Ohio and has worked for P&G for 25 years. Linda files and prosecutes patent applications in the chemical, biological and mechanical sciences, as well as developing intellectual property strategies with clients. Her technical research and patent law background enable her to work effectively with scientists and foster collaboration with business partners. Prior to becoming a patent agent, Linda worked in P&G Research & Development as a Senior Research Associate in the Health & Personal Care area for close to 10 years. Linda is admitted to practice patent law from the United States Patent & Trademark Office. She is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and the Cincinnati Intellectual Property Law Association. Linda holds a Bachelor of Science from Northern Kentucky University and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Eastern Kentucky University.
