Rebate #1: Existing Sprinkler Systems

If you have an automatic, in-ground sprinkler system that was installed at least two years ago, you
may be eligible for the following rebates:

*NOTE: All rebates for existing systems require a professional sprinkler system inspection (see the Service
Requirements & Product Specifications pdf).

How to Get a Rebate

1. Verify that your property is located in the service area of a participating utility.
Visit www.savingwater.org or call the Natural Lawn & Garden Hotline at 206-684-SAVE (press 3) to confirm whether
your utility participates in the Sprinkler System Rebate Program. (If you own a commercial or multifamily property, call
the Water Efficient Irrigation Program at 206-684-5955 to learn about additional incentives.)

2. Make sure your existing underground sprinkler system is operated by a controller (or clock) that
automatically turns the system on and off. Controller/Clock must have been in operation for at
least two years.
3. Have your sprinkler system inspected by a licensed landscape or irrigation contractor. For more
information see Choosing a Contractor (pdf).

4. Work with your contractor to determine whether you can benefit from a new rain sensor and/or
updated controller. If your existing system does not have a rain sensor, you are eligible for the rain sensor
rebate. If your existing controller does not meet conservation specifications, you are eligible for the controller rebate.
You may choose to add either a Conservation Controller or a “Smart” Controller (Evapotranspiration (ET)
Controller or Soil Moisture Sensor(s) with a Conservation Controller). For a list of smart controllers that have been
independently tested, visit the Irrigation Association at: www.irrigation.org/SWAT/industry/ia-tested.asp.

5. Have your contractor inspect your sprinkler system and install a rain sensor and/or controller
according to manufacturers’ specifications. New controllers must be completely programmed prior
to inspection.
6. Fill out Rebate #1 application form, attach copies of invoices for the inspection and equipment
upgrades, and get the appropriate signatures from your contractor.
7. Send completed application with attachments to Seattle Public Utilities at the address on the rebate
application form.
8. Rebate application must be submitted within 90 days of product installation and must be received
by December 1, 2009.
9. Keep your old controller. You may be contacted by Seattle Public Utilities to schedule an
inspection of your old controller and system upgrades before a rebate check will be issued.
