CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

PERFECTION-Conclusion
Arjuna Said
O Krsna, bathed I in Thy divine song,
Yet, for more and more truth I long,
I beg You to explain me now,
Tyag! Sanyasa! It’s why and how!
\\1\\

Lord of Lords Krsna said

O Arjuna, My dear friend and devotee,
Much, much I like thy child like curiosity.
Now, giving up results of activities is Tyaga.
But giving up activities itself is Sanyasa.
\\2\\

Abandon all kinds of activities as fault !

Nay! Sacrifice, charity, penance be not.

18/1
1
18/2 Gita My Mother Ch.18

Thus talk learned and air their opinion,

But, My final say on this, now thou listen.
\\3\\

Three modes of sacrifice, Vedas declare,

Here, listen My judgment, o fighter with flair.
\\4\\

Shun not sacrifice, oblation, penance n charity.

Perform them always as thy primary duty,
Without ego, greed, attachment and desire
Without any hope of reward n motto sinister,
With purity of mind, intellect, body and soul.
Godliness, know thou, as thy ultimate goal.
Rise above ‘I, mine and thine’ O Partha
This is My verdict on tyaga n sanyasa
\\5\6\\

Never give up prescribed duties,

My advice to thee, O Partha, is this.
Renunciation of noble n selfless acts,
Is ignorance of religious n plain facts.
\\7\\

Don’t give up duties out of fear,

Or illusion and laziness, My dear.
Renunciation in greed and passion,
Elevates not self, society nor nation.
\\8\\

2
Ch.18 Perfection-Conclusion 18/3

Act only for the sake of duty,

Don’t crave for any booty.
In goodness, renunciation such
I love and like much, much.
\\9\\

Hate not bad action or love not good,

In goodness, sacrifice one should.
\\10\\

By nature none can be inactive,

A Tyagi, with no desire, is ever active.
One attached to actions in life,
Gets three kinds fruits, for his strife,
Good, bad or mixed, as per worth,
Yogi, suffers not here or next birth.
\\12\\

Vedas declare five causes of action,

Know them from Me, O Pratha’s son.
‘Body, senses, efforts, fate and doer,’
Yet, know, I only am the commander.
\\13\14\\

Five causes alone, to completion,

Lead the right or wrong action.
But an ass sees not things clear,
Thinks he himself as the doer.
\\15\16\\

3
18/4 Gita My Mother Ch.18

An action without ego, in full jnana,

Ties not the doer, O Arjuna,
Even a killer is not then the killer,
When I willed it, the greatest healer.
\\17\\

Object and knowledge, initiate action ,

And motivate doer towards completion.
Three kinds of karma, jnana, and karta,
Learn from Me now, O Partha.
\\18\19\\

Ksatriya, vaisya, shudra, Bramhan,

Cow, crow, pig, snake, tree or lion,
One that sees them all in oneness,
Know, is a sage in goodness.
\\20\\

One who in passion mode runs,

Sees them all with indifference.
\\21\\

Fanatics , attached to one view only,

Are known in darkness solely,
He is an unrealized, impure soul,
Sensualities as his only goal.
\\22\\

Action without love or hate,

Not worrying results or fate,

4
Ch.18 Perfection-Conclusion 18/5

With pure heart and firmness,

Is known in nature goodness.
\\23\\

Action with ego and hard labor,

With an eye for fruits and desire,
Know is in passion, O warrior.
\\24\\

Action, flaring violence and distress,

With evil motto and madness,
Is known in mode of darkness.
\\25\\

Those with zeal and resolve,

Perform duty but never involve,
Are Yogis in goodness,
Caring not failure or success.
\\26\\

Enjoys success but dislikes failure,

Greedy envious selfish and impure,
Attached to work and it’s fruits,
In passion such a being sprouts.
\\27\\

Trouble makers, lazy and mad,

Oppose good and support bad,
Deceive and insult, are sad,
Know are in darkness, O lad . \\28\\

5
18/6 Gita My Mother Ch-18

Know, now three modes, O son

Of intelligence and determination
\\29\\

Sin and merit, wrong and right

Virtue and vice, dark and bright
Karma and akarma, tyagi and bhogi
True knower is an intelligent yogi
\\30\\

One who can distinguish not between

Religion and irreligion, lofty and mean,
Action and inaction, bondage and freedom,
Is in passion mode, without wisdom
\\31\\

Intelligence that makes one

Think religion as irreligion
And irreligion as religion
Is ignorance with blind vision.
\\32\\

Steadied in Yoga and firm in resolve

That controls mind, never can dissolve
Is always situated in Me, O Arjuna
And in mode goodness known `
\ \33\\

Firmness in fruitive action,

Social status and self satisfaction,
6
Ch.18 Perfection-Conclusion 18/7

Is said to be in passion.
Firmness in greed and anger,
Sorrow, miseries, lust and hunger,
Is in darkness mode, O wiser.
\\34\35\\

Now three types of happiness,

that end miseries and distress.
\\36\\

Initially, poised as a poison,

But in the end is nectar ocean,
Know, a divine happiness, O son
\\37\\

Initially sweet as sugar and juicy,

But finally it’s like a snake icy,
Happiness in passion is transitory.
\\38\\

Stems from conceit and delusion,

Causes guilt, grief and confusion,
Happiness in darkness, it’s known.
\\39\\

Three modes of nature

Affect every one’s future,
None ever escapes them,
They control every worldly game.
\\40\\

7
18/8 Gita My Mother Ch-18

Ksatriya, shudra, vaisya, and bramhan,

Due to their qualities so are known,
Born of three mode nature,
That decide destiny of every creature.
\\41\\

Peace, austerity, tolerance and honesty,

Knowledge, wisdom, religiousness, purity,
These qualities make up bramhan’s beauty.
\\42\\

Life and wealth, ksatriyas do protect,

Even sacrifice self in country’s interest,
Powerful, strong and generous,
Resourceful, firm and courageous.
\\43\\

Crops and cows farmers up bring,

True yogis feed every living being,
Vaisyas trade commodities essential,
Shudras, provide services manual.
\\44\\

One must act with truth and devotion,

Then alone he can reach perfection.
I am the Lord, producer and director,
Worldly acts, I stage as per rules of nature.
\\45\46\\

8
Ch.18 Perfection-Conclusion 18/9

Must one act as per nature and quality,

And dedicate his actions unto Me.
Thy karma decides fruits and future,
Strive hard and thy promotion ensure
\\47\\

Can smoke ever make fire dirty?

Fire ever is pure as divinity!
No act is free of fault and impurity,
So never give up thy natural duty.
\\48\\

Control thy mind with bhakti and dhyana,

For true enlightenment of self and jnana,
Jnani gives up sense enjoyment,
Perfected, free, a renounced saint.
\\49\\

Away from crowd and noise,

Talks less and meditates in poise,
Thus steadied in mind and body,
Soul detached from desires worldly,
Making self free of fear and anger,
Is perfected and realized, My dear.
\\51\52\53\\

Liberated soul, ever in bliss,

Desires nothing, but devotional service,
Sees alike beasts, animals, and men,
Loves, likes, helps, treats them humane. \\54\\

9
18/10 Gita My Mother Ch-18

Pure devotees can only know Me truly,

And attain to My kingdom heavenly.
\\55\\

All sorts of activities may thou be busy;

But for My protection! Is it easy?
Merciful I am to a true devotee,
Who, from attachments, is free.
\\56\\

Work for Me, under My direction, thou,

Clear I will all the obstacles then for you.
But if you disobey Me in ego and illusion,
You will be lost in terrible confusion.
\\57\58\\

Obey My order and this war fight,

Thou wilt be victor and see the light.
Fight for religion and truth,
I ensure thee the devine fruit.
\\59\60\\

In every heart and mind I reside,

Their past, present, future I decide,
On material machine, make them ride,
I am philosopher, guru and guide.
World is stage with every one as actor,
I decide their role, I am the director.
\\61\\

10
Ch.18 Perfection-Conclusion 18/11

O Partha, surrender thou unto Me totally,

Enjoy bliss, peace and happiness eternally.
\\62\\

This divine, confidential, illuminating song,

I sang unto Sun-God ago long, long, long,
What sages, saints, and even Gods do long,
I sang again unto thee, that will live long.
Deliberate on this supreme light now,
And act as per thy conscience, O you.
\\63\\

Before I conclude My divine message,

That will help the world, age after age,
Listen to my final verdict,
That will free thee of every conflict.
\\64\\

O Arjuna, think always of Me,

Offer obeisance only unto Me,
Ever worship, love, sing My glory
I ensure! You be perfected and free.
\\65\\

Give up all religions and thoughts now,

And with purity, unto Me give in thou;
Don’t worry and fear, I am behind thee,
From all sins I will have you free.
\\66\\

11
18/12 Gita My Mother Ch-18

Never this knowledge be told to one,

That envies Me and is a demon,
That dislikes Me and is a terror,
That he simply wills not to hear.
\\67\\

One who bears torch to My devotees,

And them shows the light and frees,
Truly so dear and near to Me he is,
And in My heavenly abode he lives.
\\68\69\70\\

One who with faith listens to this song,

And without envy, meditates on along,
Free will he be from all reactions,
And to Me such a soul truly attains.
\\71\\

O Arjuna, conqueror of wealth and enemy,

Didst thou with concentration hear Me?
Are thy doubts and illusions now dispelled?
For thy sake only, this supreme secret I spelt.
\\72\\

Arjuna Said
O My dear Krsna! Now all my doubts cleared;
Illusion, delusion, darkness totally disappeared,
With flood of divine light now I am lit up,
Having said so, Arjuna, with Gandiv got up. \\73\\

12
Ch-18 Perfection-Conclusion 18/13

Sanjay said
Rajan! Here concludes the thrilling conversation,
Between Lord of Lords and Pratha’s son,
Between two greatest souls Krsna, Arjuna,
Wonderful, beautiful, pure, large and serene,
Stupendous, philosophical, analytical and divine,
Making my hair raise with thrill and mind shine.
\\74\\

By the mercy of ‘ Guru Sri Ved Vyas’

I heard and saw supreme mysticism without bias,
Directly between Master Mystic, Lord Krsna
And great warrior, Scion of Bharta, Arjuna
\\75\\

Again and again remember I, His universal form ,

And also His smiling face with all charms,
And stunning speech so lively and warm,
And yoga of devotion that lifts my arms.
\\76\\

Where there is almighty Krsna’s power

And supreme archer, devotee, the warrior,
Victory, opulence, purity will certainly be there.
This is my opinion, which will change never.
