Thank you for your interest in working with the Royal British Columbia Museum in the
position of Executive Assistant. In order to be considered for this opportunity, you are
required to complete this Competency Assessment Questionnaire and submit it along
with your resume and cover letter.

This questionnaire will assist the panel in assessing the five behavioural competencies
identified as mandatory requirements for this position. Please provide your response to
each question using the Word document provided. In addition to demonstrating your
level of competency in each area, we will be assessing your ability to provide clear,
concise and articulate responses. Bullet form is acceptable.

It is expected that your responses will include a summary of the situation, who was
involved, your key actions, your role, the outcome and the impact of the experience -
either to you or the organization. In each question, you are asked to provide the name,
title and contact information of someone who can share their view of your performance
in the specified area.

Competency Definitions
Results Orientation is a concern of surpassing a standard of excellence. The
standard may be one’s own past performance (striving for improvement); an
Self-Management objective measure (achievement orientation); challenging goals that one has
Stream set; or even improving or surpassing what has already been done (continuous
improvement). Thus, a unique accomplishment also indicates a Results
Orientation

Initiative involves identifying a problem, obstacle or opportunity and taking


appropriate action to address current or future problems or opportunities. As
such, initiative can be seen in the context of proactively doing things and not
simply thinking about future actions.

Service Orientation implies a desire to identify and serve customers/clients,


who may include the public, co-workers, other branches/divisions, other
ministries/agencies, other government organizations, and non-government
organizations. It means focusing one’s efforts on discovering and meeting the
needs of the customer/client.

Teamwork and Co-operation is the ability to work co-operatively within


diverse teams, work groups and across the organization to achieve group and
organizational goals. It includes the desire and ability to understand and
Social Awareness respond effectively to other people from diverse backgrounds with diverse
Stream views.

Listening, Understanding and Responding is the desire and ability to


understand and respond effectively to other people from diverse backgrounds.
It includes the ability to understand accurately and respond effectively to both
spoken and unspoken or partly expressed thoughts, feelings and concerns of
others. People who demonstrate high levels of this competency show a deep
and complex understanding of others, including cross-cultural sensitivity.
