How can you improve your vocal technique and presentation, to make the most of your voice? A good vocal technique starts with breathing. Breathing exercises help you train your diaphragm, as well as aid in improving endurance and control. This is exercise nr.1, Activating and DeActivating, in a series of 7 exercises by Lizanne Hennessey Voice Coaching.

It is a good idea to activate (warm up) your vocal cords before you sing, and de-activate (cool off) when youre finished. The warmer your cords are, the more flexible they are, the better you will be able to sing! This simple exercise will help strengthen your diaphragm, train your breathing, and help you expand your range by activating and de-activating your vocal chords.

1. Sit or stand in a comfortable position, with straight back and shoulders. Relax. 2. Lay your hand over your diaphragm. This physical contact can help in the overal awareness of your diaphragm, and in focusing your breathing to the right place. Take a deep breath through your nose, keeping your shoulders straight.

3. Sing scales using both Lip Bubbles and Tongue Trills by gliding from the low to high octave and back again. Lip Bubbles: blow air through closed mouth, allowing your lips to fully vibrate Tongue Trills: place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth and roll it to produce a dr-r-r-r-r-r-r-r sound.

7. PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING
Which foto, A or B, shows a better presentation?

How can you improve your vocal technique and presentation, to make the most of your voice? A good vocal technique comes across even better in combination with a good presentation! This is exercise nr. 7 Presentation is Everything, in a series of 7 exercises by Lizanne Hennessey Voice Coaching.

Youve got it - foto A. Why? Here are the golden rules of a good presentation: 1. Take center stage! Your audience has come to hear and see you, so dont be afraid to stand in your spotlight! 2. Communicate with eye contact and facial expressions. Use eye contact and facial expressions to get your message across, as well as your voice! 3. relaxed but alert. Find a stance in which you feel relaxed, but will still be ready to break into song as soon as its your cue! This is particularly important when you are not singing (during intros and solos, for example). 4. Memorize your music! You will enjoy singing more, and get your message across more convincingly, if you know your music and lyrics by heart. But, if you really need your sheet music, just remember to look up and make eye contact with your audience now and then! 5. Learn from yourself! Look in the mirror, or make a video of yourself during exercises or performances. Watch yourself from a critical point of view, to further improve your vocal and presentation techniques. 6. Most importantly - have FUN! A strong vocal technique gives you the confidence to make the most of your voice and have fun too!
