Egypt court orders release of Hosni Mubarak
CAIRO: An Egyptian court ordered
Wednesday August 22nd, the release of
ousted President Hosni Mubarak, but ailing
ex-leader will not walk freely after over two
years in detention, now he will be detained in
his house.
Prosecutors may appeal the order, which
comes following a hearing on charges against
Mubarak of accepting gifts from a state-owned
newspaper, the last case that has kept him in
detention.
It is not known if they will file an appeal.
The hearing was held in Tora prison, where
Mubarak, 85, has been held for most of his
detention since April 2011.
Mubarak is now on trial for the kil li ng of
protesters during the 2011 uprising against
him and other charges.
He was found guilty and sentenced to life in
prison last year for failing to stop the killing of
some 900 protesters in Egypt's 2011 uprising.
His sentence was overturned on appeal and
he is now being retried, along with his security
chief and top six police commanders. His trial
resumes later this month.
Egyptian authorities have continued their
crackdown on Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood,
arresting the group' s supreme leader and
other senior figures and sending them to trial.

Traitors and Torturers
By: Brian Cloughley
A traitor is defined as "a person who betrays
someone or something, such as a friend,
cause, or principle" and many sanctimonious
Americans have accused US Army Private
Bradley Manning and the National Security
Agency's Edward Snowden of betraying their
country which patently they have not. Their
offence was to make their fellow citizens
aware that some government agencies have
been guilty of monstrously illegal conduct.
Manning embarrassed a few pompous idiots
and exposed some evil people, and Snowden
revealed startling criminality on the part of
Washi ngton' s out-of-control survei l l ance
cliques; but another point of interest in the
Manning Papers published by WikiLeaks is
that the US State Department has lots of
people who are highly intelligent.
I've read scores of the leaked dispatches and
am pleased that in general their analyses,
acuity and expression are as impressive as
they were when I had the privilege of reading
such communications as a matter of duty (and
equal enjoyment) many years ago. There are
still some pretty good folks in the US foreign
service, thank goodness - although they have
to keep their sensible heads down lest they be
victimized by spiteful morons.
Talking of whom . . . As I began to write this
piece there was news that the president of the
United States had cancelled a meeting with his
Russian counterpart because Russia has
given sanctuary to Snowden to save him from
treatment in the US that would have met with
the approval of the Soviet Union's Gulag or the
gleeful torturers of the American army's Abu
Ghr ai b pr i son who pr act i ced what ar e
wonderfully called 'enhanced interrogation
techniques'.
This is one of these irregular grammatical
constructions, in that we conduct enhanced
interrogation; you tie people's hands behind
their backs and hang them naked from the
dripping walls of festering cells; they have died
from heart failure brought on by eating too
many prison pizzas.
The American officer who suffered most from
the Abu Ghraib affair was, inevitably, the head
of the Board of Inquiry, Major General Antonio
Taguba, an honorable man who was ordered
into retirement because he refused to conceal
the revolting details of torture that had been
approved at the hi ghest l evel of the US
government. He was loyal to his country but,
as he said after he was dismissed, "I'd been in
the army thirty-two years by then, and it was
the first time that I thought I was in the mafia."
And this is parallel to the fashion in which the
US admi ni st rat i on has t r eat ed Br adl ey
Manni ng and i s det ermi ned to deal wi th
Edward Snowden. Neither of them imagined
they were in a squalid mafia that disdains
decency and want s t o concent r at e on
persecuting them rather than righting the
wrongs they disclosed.
Before President Putin helped Obama look
infantile, there was a fascinating revelation
about American 'justice' as now interpreted.
The US Attorney General, Eric Holder, wrote to
his opposite number in Moscow saying that if
the Russians handed over Snowden to the US
authorities he would not be tortured. I don't
think I am alone in finding it barely credible
that the senior official in America's justice
system thinks it essential to say that if people
are del i vered up to hi m they wi l l not be
subjected to physical and mental torment.
Shoul d t hat not be t aken f or grant ed?
Obviously not.
His words were "Mr Snowden will not be
tortured. Torture is unlawful in the United
States." Is it, indeed? So this would explain
why for a year Private Manning was subjected
to sleep deprivation, kept naked and shackled
in solitary confinement in a tiny wire cage, and
menaced by enormous (and disgustingly fat)
guar ds, who t r eat ed hi m wi t h bul l yi ng
contempt.
It is stated in the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, signed by the US in 1948, that
"Everyone charged with a penal offence has
the right to be presumed innocent until proved
guilty according to law in a public trial at which
he has had all the guarantees necessary for
his defense." Fat chance of that in Obamaland
In considering Manning's appalling treatment,
the Uni ted Nat i ons' Speci al Rapporteur
assessed that "imposing seriously punitive
conditions of detention on someone who has
not been found guilty of any crime is a violation
of his right to physi cal and psychological
integrity as well as of hi s presumption of
innocence." His treatment was vindictively
cruel - it was in fact torture - which is why it is
so important to keep Snowden out of the
talons of what is described as 'justice' in the
New America.
And this brings us to injustice and a real traitor.
The injustice is the failure of US authorities to
pursue an authentic American traitor, in this
case a high-profil e person named James
Cl apper who i s di r ect or of Nat i onal
Intelligence. In March this year he was asked
under oath i n Congress by Senator Ron
Wyden, "if you could give me a yes or no
answer to the question, does the National
Security Agency collect any type of data at all
on mi l l i ons or hundreds of mi l l i ons of
Americans?" Continued on page 9

Defending Pakistan in America
By: Saad Shafqat
During a trip to the United States earlier this
summer , I f ound sever al f r i ends and
acquaintances offering sympathy and empathy
that I was braving life in Pakistan. They were
especially concerned about the perils of daily
life in Karachi, our beloved teeming coastal
metropolis. Despite assurances that we were
going about our Karachi lives with reasonable
happi ness, comf ort and grati t ude to t he
Almighty, the tut-tutting and tsk-tsking did not
ease up. Virtuall y everyone I spoke with
confronted me with the reports of terrorism,
gang warfare and street crime that tend to
keep Kar achi (and i ndeed, t he rest of
Pakistan) in the news. You poor thing was
the common theme.
Karachi does have its share of troubles
what place doesnt? but it is also a thriving
city of 20 million and counting. There are
parks, golf courses, shopping malls, cinemas.
There is a breakneck social scene and a
f l our i shi ng popul at i on of wor l d- cl ass
restaurants. The cultural calendar is full all
year round, with plays, concerts, readings,
recitals, debates and discussions. There is an
expanding middle class with ever-increasing
disposable incomes and everybody wants a
pi ece of the acti on. Property pri ces are
constantly up, the stock market keeps soaring
and new construction is frequently seen.
Of course, none of t hi s makes Karachi
particularly unique or distinctive. But these
features do establish that Pakistans largest
city isnt the hellhole that people perceive it to
be sitting from afar.
After repeatedly defending my city, I began to
wonder what our US holiday might look like if
we focused exclusively on the negatives. Over
a two-week peri od, my fami ly and I had
thoroughly enjoyable time as we zig-zagged
up and down the east coast. But there were
some inevitable hiccups.
What shoul d have been a pl easurabl e
four-hour car ride from Washington DC to New
York turned into a torturous 11-hour nightmare
because Interstate-95, the major east coast
artery, was abruptl y cl osed to traffi c. In
Manhattan, entering Columbus Circle from 8th
Avenue, we found ourselves trapped for what
seemed l i ke f or ever i n an i mpossi bl y
gridlocked intersection that would not have
looked out of place in the developing world. In
Orlando, we were swindled by a taxi driver. In
Charleston, South Carolina, we were accosted
by a beggar. Other than t hat, we had a
fabulous visit. But these unexpected episodes
did leave an impression.
Psychological research has repeatedly shown
that bad stuff creates a bigger mental impact
than information that is positive or emotionally
neutral. Bad stuff happens everywhere, as
does good stuff. You just remember the bad
stuff more. This property of adverse events is
what makes negativity newsworthy and it sets
the stage for cognitive biases, logical fallacies
and false assumptions.
If we exclusively focus on negative reports to
reach a judgment, we are engaging in mental
laziness and, ultimately, a particularly virulent
kind of discrimination. There are, for example,
serious adversities in America that go well
beyond my brief holiday experience random
gun vi olence that keeps taki ng scores of
innocent lives, troubled cities that are flirting
with bankruptcy, bitter political stalemate in the
halls of government. Yet, America is also a
place where life hums along, people dream big
dreams and great things happen.
Pakistan is no different. It is a nation of 180
million that sleeps and wakes like any other
place in the world, where the business of life
goes on no matter what. Bad news coming out
of Pakistan should define the country no more
than bad news coming out of America i s
allowed to define America. Yes, disasters do
strike, but many of us are getting by and we
are thankful for it (or should be, if we are not).
There is no doubt that Pakistan is mired in
troubl es. We are deal i ng wi th a terrori st
insurgency, a debilitating energy crisis and low
levels of literacy and wealth not to mention
the geopolitical misfortune of being located in
what i s ar guabl y t he wor l d s t oughest
neighbourhood. Yet, it is not all bleak. Let us
not forget that after more than six decades of
trying to get it right, Pakistan has finally gone
through its first-ever peaceful transition of
democratic governments, undeniably a major
step towards the evolution of an equitable
society and an accountable political culture. It
is keep in mind that for every item of bad or
depressing news, there are several such
promising and uplifting developments that go
unacknowledged or under-acknowledged.
The human dr i ve t o sear ch f or bet t er
circumstances is innate and uni versal . If
nothing else, this alone provides good reason
to hope that the proportion of those who are
not just getting by but getti ng ahead wil l
continue to increase in Pakistan, as elsewhere
around the world.

Islamic luminary Al-Sumait Passes Away
BY: P.K. ABDUL GHAFOUR
Abd Al -Rahman Al -Sumai t , who hel ped
t housands of Af r i cans under st and and
embrace Islam, constructed 5,700 mosques
and four universities in Africa, passed away on
Thursday August 15 2013. He was 66. He was
awarded the King Faisal International Prize in
1996 i n recogni t i on of hi s I sl ami c and
humanitarian services.
Condolence messages poured in from all over
the world through the social media and news
websites, expressing shock and sorrow over
his death. "Al-Sumait's death is a big loss for
t he Ar ab and I sl ami c Ummah, " sai d
Mo h a mme d B a d a h d a h , a s s i s t a n t
secretary-general of the World Assembly of
Muslim Youth.
"We can fi nd onl y a few i ndi vi dual s l i ke
Al -Sumai t among the 1.5 bi ll ion Musl ims
around the world," Badahdah said, and urged
Muslims to spend more of their time, money
and energy in humanitarian activities. He said
Muslims in the past had made a lot of efforts to
spread of the message among people in the
East and West, overcoming a lot of difficulties.
"We should follow the good example of our
forefathers and exert all possible efforts to
spread the message of this great religion. We
should not show any negligence in informing
expatriate workers about the teachings of our
religion. Our students who pursue their higher
studies in foreign countries should also keep
this mission in their minds," he said.
Badahdah descr i bed Al - Sumai t as an
encyclopedia on Africa as the late scholar had
conducted detailed studies on the continent's
political, social and economic matters and
published several books.
"Arab media has ignored this great man and
did not give much publicity for his humanitarian
activities in Africa. He is a model of a good
Musl i m who appl i ed I sl am t o spr ead
goodness, love and harmony in the world,"
said Mahmoud, an Egyptian commentator.
"I t i s qui t e unf ortunate t hat peopl e l i ke
Al-Sumait is not well-known in society. He was
a great personality. As a result of his activities
millions of Africans embraced Islam. He had
sponsored 15,000 orphans and constructed
9,500 artesian wells in Africa. His history
should be wri tten i n golden l etters," sai d
another close associate of Al-Sumait.
Born in Kuwait in 1947, Al-Sumait studied
medicine in Baghdad University, obtained a
diploma in tropical medicine from Liverpool
University, and specialized in internal medicine
and gastroenterology in Montreal General
Hospital in Canada. He conducted research on
hepat i c mal i gnanci es i n Ki ng' s Col l ege,
London. He worked briefly as a consultant
gastroenterologist at Sabah Hospital in Kuwait
before dedicating his full-time to humanitarian
activities.
As a young student, Al-Sumait witnessed a
scene outside his school that sparked his
interest in helping the less fortunate, and this
changed his life forever. He observed poor
wor ker s wai t i ng f or t hei r means of
transportation in the heat on a daily basis. He
purchased a car with the support of some
friends and drove these workers for free.
His interest in Africa was ignited when he felt
and saw t hat t he cont i nent was bei ng
neglected. Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya,
Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Angola,
among many other nations in the area that
were sufferi ng f rom fami ne, hunger and
di sease, were t he f ocus of Al -Sumai t ' s
operations. The Africa Muslims Agency, where
he had served as chairman from 1981 to 2008,
operates in more than 40 countries, providing
vari ous soci al , educat i onal , heal t h and
humanitarian services.

Sixty-six Years of Freedom
By: Rahul Singh
Independent I ndi a 66 years ol d, as wi l l
Pak i s t an. Bot h c ount r i es got t hei r
Independence from British rule on August 15,
1947. Mohammed Ali Jinnah was Pakistan's
first Governor-General and the main driving
force f or t he f ormat i on of t hat count ry.
Jawaharl al Nehru was Indi a' s fi rst Prime
Minister but Mahatma Gandhi is considered
the father of the nation. Both Jinnah and
Gandhi died soon after the independence, but
Nehru remained to guide India.
In Paki stan, an el ected government has
r e c e n t l y g i v e n wa y t o a n o t h e r
democratically-elected, an unprecedented
devolution for Pakistan, bedeviled as it has
been with coups and long bouts of military
rule. Indeed, a disastrous army dictatorship,
that of the bumbling General Yahya Khan, led
to a humiliating defeat at the hands of India,
the break-up of Pakistan and the creation of
Bangladesh.
Fortunately, India has not broken up, though
the doomsayers predicted that it would, since it
was much more diverse than Pakistan, with
more languages, communities and faiths that
threatened to pull it apart. India's democracy
proved to be a much stronger binding force
than religion.
First, there was the revolt of the Nagas in the
nort heast who want ed an i ndependent
Nagaland. Despite the continuing unrest in the
region, many former rebels have become
elected leaders. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, in
the south, there was a powerful separatist
movement, the demands of which were much
more radical than those of the Bengalis in East
Pakistan. Yet, the Tamil separatists moderated
their demands once they were elected to
to power - and got them - whereas East
Pakistan was forced to rise up in revolt when it
was deni ed i t s r epr esent at i ve r i ght s.
Democracy has kept India united; the lack of it
broke up Pakistan.
India has, of course, had other serious divisive
threats, mainly in Punjab and the State of
Jammu and Kashmir. In Punjab, Indira Gandhi
made a fatal error by sending in troops into
Amritsar's Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of
the Sikhs. Her advisers told her that the army
would clear the Sikh militants, who were holed
up in the shrine, in no time at all with little loss
of life. And she would be seen as upholding
the unity of the country against terrorists.
Her advisers were grievously wrong. It took the
army two days and ni ghts to defeat the
heavi ly-armed and well-trained terrorists.
Hundreds of Si kh mi li tants, sol diers and
innocent pilgrims (who were caught in the
crossfire) were killed in the fighting (the exact
toll has never been released by the Indian
authorities).
Indira Gandhi paid for the blunder with her life,
when two of her Sikh bodyguards gunned her
down i n her gar den. Event ual l y, t he
traumatized Sikh community returned to the
mainstream, the election of a Sikh, the gentle
and upright Dr. Manmohan Singh, as Prime
Minister being symbolic of the change. Again,
democracy had provided the healing touch
and rescued India.
Meanwhi le, Kashmir had also gone up in
flames, thanks partly due to a rigged election
and corrupt misgovernance. Kashmir remains
one of India's major unresolved problems and
the main sticking point in better ties between
India and Pakistan.
So, is India's glass half full, or half empty?
The empty part relates to insufficient progress
in two main areas: Education and health.
India's literacy rate is still only a little over 70
per cent, which means that over 300 million
Indians, mostly girls, cannot read or write. And
the expectancy of life - the surest indicator of
health - is still less than 70 years. Countries
like China, Indonesia and even Sri Lanka,
whi ch were behi nd Indi a i n these soci al
parameters six decades ago, have done better
than India.
Where the glass is half full is in the rapid
economic growth India has made in the past
two decades, next only to China's, creating a
middle class of around 300 million Indians.
India has become a giant in the information
and technology (IT) areas and a major base
for outsourci ng jobs and ski l l s for maj or
western mul ti nati onal compani es. Indi an
companies like the Tatas and Birlas have also
successfully ventured abroad.
A quarter century ago, India did not figure
among the nations that mattered in the world.
It now matters and Indians can justifiably be
proud of that. Major challenges remain, but
they can hold their heads up high, in India and
abroad. The same, sadly, cannot be said for
Pakistan. However, with a stable democratic
government in power and the army in the
background, it may be about to finally turn the
corner.
On August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru made
perhaps his most eloquent speech. He spoke
about his nation stepping out "from the old to
the new" and of India's "tryst with destiny".
That tryst still needs to be fulfilled.

COLOMBO - One popular view of Buddhism is
of a peaceabl e rel i gi on, some of whose
devotees sweep brushes in front of them, so
that they do not step on and destroy any living
creature. Unfortunately there is another, far
from placid side to some Buddhists which the
Muslim world has had cause to see in recent
years.
The genocidal attacks in Myanmar on the
luckl ess Musl im Rohi ngya community by
Buddhist fanatics was, until this week, the
most high profile example of this bigotry. Now
however Buddhist thugs have been at work in
Sri Lanka. A mosque in the capital Colombo
has been damaged and forced to close after
violent attacks by Buddhist rioters.
This ugly outbreak of Islamophobia has been
inspired by a shadowy group known as the
Bodu Bala Sena, led by extremist Buddhist
monks. I t i s suspect ed t hat t her e ar e
connections between them and the monks
who have led the massacres in Myanmar.
Unfortunately, the violence against Sri Lanka's
hapless Muslim minority has to be viewed
against the backdrop of Sri Lanka's recent
history. More than 20 years of savage conflict
ended in 2009 with the utter defeat of the
Tamil Tigers and the overrunning of their
strongholds in the north of the island. The
har shness wi t h whi ch t he vi ct or i ous
government treated the Tamils, was initially
excused on the basis that it was important that
none of the rebel leaders was able to slip
away, by hiding among civilians. Nevertheless,
there were summary executions and refugees
were herded into camps and kept there many
months for "processing."
Such was the bitter nature of the civil war that
most Sri Lankans were to some extent or other
brutalized. Moreover, an entire generation
grew up steeped in conflict and confrontation.
With the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, it seems
that unfortunately some of the Sinhalese
majority feel they need a new enemy, thus the
the country's Muslims and indeed Christians
are being targeted. The attacks on Muslim
property or physical assaults on Muslims are
not confined to the capital, but have been
occurring with increasing frequency throughout
the island. Until recently, the violence and
intimidation have been low level and might
have been di smi ssed as t he wor k of
mischief-makers. Yet there now seems to be a
pattern to these outrages. Even if the sinister
Bodu Bala Sena is not behind every criminal
act against Muslims, it can be sure that its own
thuggish hatred is inspiring others.
It cannot be emphasized too strongly that the
government in Colombo must act with the
greatest determination and firmness to stamp
out this bigotry. The problem is that the police
appear markedl y rel uctant to pursue and
prosecute those responsible for these hate
crimes. But it is not simply their lack of action
and rigor that is the problem. Sri Lanka' s
Muslims are (Continued on next page)

seemingly being blamed for inciting the prejudice.
How else can one interpret the fact that officials at
the Colombo mosque, which has been at the
center of thi s week' s vi ol ence, have been
pers uaded to cl os e the bui l di ng, at l eas t
temporarily?
This is simply unacceptable. There can be nothing
provocative about a mosque. It is the job of the
police to protect all property and all Sri Lankan
citizens. It should also be the job of the government
to ensure that aggression and intimidation of the
sort that has been seen in Colombo cannot be
allowed to succeed. Unfortunately by failing in its
dut y, Pr e s i de nt Mahi nda Ra j apaks a' s
administration is sending out entirely the wrong
signal.
Diplomatic sources suggest that there is enough
evidence to prosecute some members of Bodu
Bala Sena for hate crimes. These individuals ought
therefore be brought to trial and if convicted given
the severest of sentences. The government needs to
demonstrate that it will not tolerate these
outrages.
Indeed, it could be argued that it is high time that
the president looked to his poor reputation for civil
liberties and human rights, and cracking down on
sectarian bigots would be a fine start.
Unfortunately, Rajapaksa seems to have a thick
political skin. He has been accused by the UN
Human Rights Council over the conduct of the civil
war. And the UN organization was also critical of
his administration's treatment to all the country's
minorities.
This November Rajapaksa is due to host a meeting
of what us ed to be known as the Bri ti s h
Commonwealth. Some countries have said they
might stay away because of Sri Lanka's human

Traitors and Torturers
Continued from page 4
The Clapper answer was: "No, Sir." He was
again asked, "It does not?" and replied "Not
wittingly."
The only true word he uttered was "Si r".
Because he told a downright deliberate lie. But
we wouldn't have known that Clapper had
committed perjury had it not been for Edward
Snowden - which i s the mai n reason the
spiteful apparatchiks of Washington are so
determined to wreak vengeance on him.
The man Clapper has betrayed both cause
and principle: the cause of national honour and
the principle of truth. He is a traitor to himself
and to his nation. He later admitted that his
words were "the least untruthful" he could
have ut t ered, but t he admi ni st r at i on i n
Washington is content to have a liar continuing
to direct the country' s entire i ntel l igence
system, while determined to hunt down the
man who exposed him. A man who lies to the
US is regarded as a respected member of the
establishment while those who tell Americans
the truth are hounded and reviled. Maybe
perjury pays?

A Mother's Love Can Not Be
Meausured- She Is a Gem
That Needs To Be Treasured.
By: Anam Afaq
Your Mother carried you inside of her womb for
nine whole months, she felt sick for months
with nausea, then she watched her feet swell
and her skin stretch and tear. She struggled to
climb stairs, she got breathless quickly and
even a simple task like putting her shoes on
was a huge struggle for her. She suffered
many sleepless nights while you kicked and
squi r med i nsi de of her and whi l e you
demanded that she scoffed junk at 3am. She
then went through EXCRUCIATING PAIN to
bring you into this world. "We have enjoined
on man kindess to his parents; in pain did his
mother bear him, and in pain did she give him
birth" (Quran 46:15). She became your nurse,
your chef, your maid, your chauffeur, your
biggest fan, your teacher, your agony, aunt
and your best friend. She has struggled for
you, cried over you, fought for you, put herself
second for you, hoped the best for you and
has driven herself insane with worry for you
but never has she asked for anything in return
because she loves you and did it all on love
alone! Most of us take our Mums for granted
but there are people who have lost or have
never even seen theirs. If you have a loving
Mother who did all of this for you, you are very
fortunate. Never devalue her worth. A man
came to the Prophet (Peace and bleassings
be upon Him) and said, "Oh Messenger of
Allah! Who is the most deserving of kind
treat ment ?" Wi th the face beami ng, the
Prophet (pbuh) said, "Your mother". He asked,
"Then whom?" The Prophet (pbuh) said,
"Your mother". The man ventured once again,
"Who is next?" The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Then
your father." (Sahih Bukhari, Muslim)

A LESSON IN GOVERNMENT
A teacher was teaching her second grade
class about the government, so for homework
that one day, she told her her students to ask
their parents what the government is.
When Little Johnny got home that day, he
went up to hi s dad and ask hi s what the
government was.
His dad thought for a while and answered,
''Look at it this way: I'm the president, your
mom is Congress, your maid is the work force,
you are the people and your baby brother is
the future.''
''I still don't get it'' responded the Little Johnny.
''Why don't you sleep on it then? Maybe you'll
understand it better,'' said the dad.
''Okay then...good night'' said Little Jonny went
off to bed. In the middle of the night, Little
Johnny was awakened by his baby brother's
crying. He went to his baby brother's crib and
found that his baby brother had taken a crap in
hi s di aper. So Li ttl e Johnny went to hi s
parent's room to get help. When he got to his
parent' s bedroom, he l ooked through the
keyhole to check if his parents were asleep.
Through the keyhole he saw his mom loudly
snoring, but his dad wasn't there. So he went
to the maid's room. When he looked through
the maid' s room keyhole, he saw his dad
having sex with his maid. Little Johnny was
surprised, but then he just realized something
and thinks aloud, ''OH!! Now I understand the
government! The President is screwing the
work force, Congress is fast asleep, nobody
cares about the people, and the future is full of
shit!''

"You got a silver compact and a red pickup?"
"The compact is my wife's car, but that's my

The hit man looks through the scope again.
"Well, they're going at it like teenagers in your

"I want you to shoot her in the head and shoot
him in the balls."
The hit man says, "I get paid $5,000 per shot."
"I don't care! Just do it!"

Good News for September
The recently published Visa Office Bulletin for
September 2013 states that immigrant visas
will remain current for spouses and children of
permanent residents (F2A) from all countries
during the month of September.
September is almost here-what should I do?
Legal permanent residents who have filed
immi grant vi sa peti ti ons (I-130) for thei r
spouses and/or children (unmarried and under
the age of 21) should do the following:
1. If your spouse and/or children are in the
United States, you should file their applications
to adjust status to permanent resident (I-485)
with USCIS immediately.
Before doing so, you should:
Find out if they are eligible to file:
ttp://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis
Click on the Forms link and scroll to Form
I-485. Click on Find a USCIS Office, locate the
nearest office, and then visit it for guidance, if
needed. or
Call the National Customer Service Center:
1 800 375 5283
Warning: Form I-485 and al l supporti ng
documents, (including filing fees), are not filed
at the local office of the USCIS.
To take advantage of the current availability of
F2A visas, the application must be received
before October 1, 2013 at the USCIS Service
Center having jurisdiction over the applicant's
residence.
2. If your spouse and/or children are overseas,
determine if they have filed their immigrant
visa applications (DS-230) and all required
documents with the National Visa Center or
the United States Consulate.
Roshni is very thankful to Mr. Eric
Copland, Immigration Attorney, who
wrote this article for benifit of all
immigrants cummunities.
If so, they may be eligible to be interviewed
duri ng Sept ember at t he Uni t ed St at es
Consulate in their home country.
To find out if this will be possible, locate the
Home Page of the Consulate in the country
where your relatives are residing
http://www.usembassy.gov/
Next, submit an inquiry, either by email or the
special link now used by many Consulates for
such inquiries available on their home page.
Contact t he of fi ce of the Congressi onal
Representati ve i n your area and ask for
assistance.
You may do so, by goi ng t o AI LA' s
Congressional link and entering your zip code:
http://capwiz.com/aila2/directory/congdir.tt
You may t hen v i s i t Cong r es s i on al
Representatives of your choice during their
summer recess at their local office
Is it too late to file an immigrant
petition for my spouse and/or children?
If you have not yet filed an immigrant visa
peti ti on (I-130), you may do so now, but
remember that the current availability for the
F2A visas will not last too long. If there is a
heavy demand in the F2A category during
September, the Department of State may
re-establish cut-off dates in order to maintain
annual limits on F2A visas. Depending on your
personal si t uat i on, you may be abl e t o
expedite the processing of your immigrant visa
p e t i t i o n i f y o u m e e t o n e o r
more of the following criteria:
Severe financial loss
Extreme emergent situation
Humanitarian situation
USCIS error
For more information about this program,
contact the National Customer Service Center
at 800-375-5283.
Conclusion:
Time is short. Act quickly. Good Luck.

Q. & A.
Q. I am Green Card Holder and would like to
marry a Pakistani Girl, she is in Pakistan. Can
I sponsor her? in which category? and how
much is the waiting period?
Hasan
A. Your question raises several interesting
points, some of which I discuss in the next
article to appear in Roshni.
A permanent resident, or a U.S citizen, can
petition for a spouse. In either case, it will take
several months for a properly documented
petition to be processed by the immigration
service here in the USA.
If the current immigrant visa availability in the
F2A visa category is rolled back by the State
Dept at that time, the overseas spouse of a
permanent resident would have to wait a long
time before her visa interview is scheduled by
the Embassy.
However, if the permanent resident becomes a
naturalized U.S. citizen by the time the visa
petition is approved, there will be no backlog in
immigrant visa availabilty for the overseas
spouse, only the normal processing time to get
the interview scheduled after all filing fees
and documents are submitted to the National
Visa Center.
With best regards.
