Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission

On January 1999 through Executive Orders 54 and 65 the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission was created.

PRRC Chairperson

Sec. Jose L. Atienza, Jr.

Upgrade the water quality of Pasig River to Class C level.

What is Class C water quality?

Class AA Waters intended as public water supply requiring only approved disinfection to meet the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW) Class A Waters suitable as water supply requiring conventional treatment to meet PNSDW Class B Waters intended for primary contact recreation like bathing, swimming and skin diving Class D Waters intended for agriculture, irrigation, livestock watering, etc.

CLASS C

Waters for fishery

Secondary recreation like boating

Water supply for manufacturing processes after treatment

Rehabilitation Programs for Pasig River

Based on the Final Report of the 1990 Feasibility Study conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA) the following targets were identified to improve the water quality and environmental condition of Pasig River:

Target 1: Target 2: Target 3: Target 4: Target 5: Target 6: Target 7: Target 8: Target 9:

Eliminate offensive odor Reduce BOD load from 330 tons/day to 200 tons/day Reduce solid waste Increase and control the flow of water Reduce flooding Enforce Zoning Ordinances by respective LGUs Remove sunken vessels Develop linear parks Relocate informal settlers

Rehabilitation Programs for Pasig River

In addition to these, the PRRC Project Management Office identified additional programs to be included in the rehabilitation of Pasig River. These are:

Target 10: Target 11: Target 12:

Establishment of water transport service Bioremediation / Aeration and Filtration Phytoremediation

Targets 1, 2, 4 and 5

Napindan, Taguig City The pilot site is an 800 m X 1.1 m parapet wall with domestic wastewater coming from 79 households in the area. Twenty three (23) carefully selected, useful, nonpathogenic and naturally-occurring microbial isolates were used to attack, degrade and neutralize the pollutants present in the river water.
