METTUPALAYAM(40 km from Coimbatore)

Mettupalayam is a taluk of Coimbatore Rural district, located to the north of the city of Coimbatore on the way to Ooty. It is located in the foot hills of Nilgiri hills about 38 km north of downtown Coimbatore, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Mettupalayam is the third largest township in the district and one of the fast developing suburbs on the northern side of Coimbatore. Geography Mettupalayam is located at 11.3000N 76.9500E.[1] It has an average elevation of 314 metres (1033 feet). Mettupalayam is situated on the bank of Bhavani River at the foot of the Nilgiri mountains. Demographics According to the 2011 census, the taluk of Mettupalayam had a population of 259,633 with 129,299 males and 130,334 females. There were 1008 women for every 1000 men. The taluk had a literacy rate of 71.93. Child population in the age group below 6 was 10,571 Males and 10,259 Females. As of 2001 India census, Mettupalayam had a population of 66,313. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Mettupalayam has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 68%. In Mettupalayam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. Transport Mettupalayam is the railway junction for the Nilagiri passenger (NMR), and provides the interchange for passengers of this subline to the broad gauge railway. The Nilgiri Express (Blue Mountain Express) connects Mettupalayam to the state capital Chennai via Coimbatore.it is famous for its Ooty train "Nilgiri Passenger", the only rack and pinion railway in Asia. Nilgiri Mountain Railway Mettupalayam is the starting point for two of the Ghat Roads into the Nilgiri Hills. Subsequently it has established itself for the trade of fresh fruits & vegetables coming down from the hills and also for produce that grows on the plains and is destined for the hills. Fresh products from here is supplied to most parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Karamadai Ranganathar temple is famous for its car festival every year, where thousands of people flock to see the holy car of RANGANATHAR and get his blessings Matheswarar Temple Located at Kuttaiyur (on the way from Mettupalyam to Karamadai), is a very famous Temple for Lord Shiva. Agriculture is the occupation of most of the people. Mettupalayam is surrounded by lot of villages,fertile enough for agriculture. Black Thunder is a water theme park located 3 km from the town, that attracts many tourists. This narrow gauge mountain train winds through 46 km of forests, tea plantations, 16 tunnels and crosses more than 250 bridges, starting from Mettupalayam on the plains.. The train journey to Mettupalayam is one of the most fascinating experiences for tourists. This steam train was built during the British period. Transportation business is also famous in Mettupalayam. Potatoes for the world market are supplied from Mettupalayam market. Economic Development(2001 census) Composition of workforce The working population comprises 37 % of the total population with a majority of them engaged in tertiary activities. 64 % of the work force is engaged in tertiary activities. Nearly 23 % of the work force is engaged in secondary sector and about 13% of the workforce is engaged in primary sector, mainly in tea plantations and agricultural activities. Economic development Mettupalayam is an important trading hub and transit centre for hill products including potatoes, vegetables, fruits, arecanut, tea and coffee, which are grown in the Nilgiris. Thus the economic activities in Mettupalayam are predominantly related to trade and tertiary sector. Industrial activity Mettupalayams industrial developments are mainly along the railway line and also along the Bhavani river. While there are also a few industrial activities along Sirumugai road and Ooty road, there are no large scale industrial units within Mettupalayam other than the United Bleacher Company and a few sawmills. Commercial activity Vegetable trade forms the most important commercial activity in the town. An estimated 4,000 to 4,500 hectares is under potato cultivation in the Nilgiris. The vegetable market in Mettupalayam is particularly known for trading in `Ooty potato' which is considered to have better taste and bigger in size compared to the other varieties. Every day, 100 to 110 loads of potato (each load being 10 tons)

The commercial activities of Mettupalayam town are mainly concentrated in and around the Old Municipal office area, which lies at the intersection of Ooty road and Sirumugai road. Major commercial developments are mainly concentrated along the major arterial roads including Ooty road, Bungalamadu road, Annur road, which occupy 9% of the developed area in the town. The CCP highlights the need for better market and warehousing facilities including truck terminal to support the commercial development in the town in view of its position as an aggregation centre for agricultural /horticultural products.
