Learning Outcomes: 1. Listen selectively and critically in order to give appropriate responses in a variety of social and academic contexts. (2.2, 5.2) 2. Express views and opinions confidently in different social and academic settings. (2.2, 5.2, 5.4) 3. Elicit information from a variety of written text types using appropriate comprehension skills (1.5, 6.3) 4. Present impromptu and prepared speeches effectively. (3.3, 5.1, 5.2, 7.3, 8.3) 5. Write texts using appropriate writing conventions, styles and registers in a variety of contexts.(2.2, 5.2, 6.3) This project addresses learning outcomes 1, 2, 3,,4 & 5 Specific Learning Outcomes: By the end of this coursework, students should be able to: 1. Deliver a prepared speech confidently in different social and academic settings. 2. Listen selectively and critically in order to give appropriate responses in a group discussion. 3. Elicit information from a variety of written text types and write texts appropriately in a given test. ( The weighting for coursework is 100%)

Task 1 : This task constitutes 50% of the course assessment. In a group of 4, you will be given a situation with 4 options. You are required : a. to deliver a prepared speech (25 %): Each of you will be assigned an option. You will be required to prepare and deliver a 4-5 minute speech individually. b. to listen and response in a group discussion (25%): Each of you will take turns to discuss all the four options in a group discussion. Your discussion will need to conclude with the most appropriate option. TASK 2: This task constitutes 50% of the course assessment. You will be given a test. a) The test will comprise a reading comprehension task, cloze passage and an extended essay. Marking Criteria 1. Speaking & Listening skills You will be assessed in these areas: Task fulfilment - your ability to give logical points and ideas that are well elaborated with explanations and well linked as well as justified. Language The use of a variety of structures, vocabulary and correct grammar. Communicative ability Ability to manage a discussion, speak fluently and confidently without hesitation or unnecessary pauses. Collaboration your ability to contribute to the groups discussion. Organization your ability to organize your discussion.

2. Reading & Writing skills Assessment for the test will be marked according to the marking criteria set for this test.
