Causes of Death Statistics in 2011

1. Deaths and crude death rates


The number of deaths was 257,396 persons in 2011, up 0.8 percent from 2010. The
crude death rate marked 513.6 persons per 100,000 population in 2011, up 0.3 percent
from 2010.

2. Death by sex and age


As for those in their fifties and those in their seventies or more, the number of deaths
increased from the previous year. As for the other age groups, the number of deaths
decreased from the previous year.

3. Leading causes of death


The three leading causes of death were malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases
and heart diseases. These three causes occupied 47.4 percent of all deaths.

The ten leading causes of death were malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases,
heart diseases, suicides, diabetes mellitus, pneumonia, chronic lower respiratory
diseases, liver diseases, transport accidents and hypertensive diseases. These ten
causes of death occupied 70.8 percent of all deaths.

4. Infant mortality
The number of infant deaths was 1,435 persons in 2011. The infant mortality
rate (number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births) marked 3.0 persons in 2011,
which recorded a year-on-year drop.

5. Perinatal mortality
The number of perinatal deaths (infant deaths of less than 7 days and fetal deaths
of 28 weeks of gestation or more) was 1,461 persons in 2011. The perinatal mortality
rate stood at 3.1 persons per 1,000 live births plus fetal deaths.

6. Maternal mortality
The number of maternal deaths (the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42
days of termination of pregnancy) was 81 persons in 2011. The maternal mortality
ratio marked 17.2 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in 2011, which increased
by 1.4 (9.2 percent) from 2010.

7. Alcohol-induced death
The number of alcohol-induced deaths was 4,493 deaths in 2011. The alcohol-induced
death rate dropped by 1.4 percent from 2010.
