Class Activity Have a map on the board of Europe, and ask one of the students to come up and draw where they thought the Western Front took place. Think-Pair-Share: During what campaign do you think the most Australians died? What do you think the overall death toll of the Australians was like compared to other countries? Go through the statistics from the war (via power point) Contextualise by getting the whole class to stand up; -~10 % of the total population enlisted Getting the class to sit down except for 3 of the boys send 3 boys to war (aka the back of the room), and ask them why they enlisted. -Ask class how many of the boys do you think came home alive, and then ask only one of them to come back tell students that the Australian death toll was around about ~60%.

Student Activity Jigsaw on the Major Battles of the Western Front (to be continued until the next lesson). Move students into home groups (first rows to face second rows, third rows to face back row) and get them to allocate themselves numbers 1 4 . Then get students to open Major Battles of the Western Front one note file on Virtual Classroom. Go through the instructions on the file:
First of all you will be put into a group of 4 - this will be your home group. In your home group, assign yourselves numbers 1,2 ,3 & 4. Next you will be placed into expert groups with people that have the same number as you. In this group, you will research the battle below that corresponds with your number. In your expert groups, you need research your battle and create a 3 slide power point presentation about your battle - including the location, a description of how the battle was fought (ie. The plan, use of weaponry etc), Australia's involvement, and total casualties. Your power point must include images. Also, your expert group must create two questions for your home group to answer - one must be a low order question, and the other a high order question. Below each topic, there is a list of selected links which will help you find information. In these expert groups, it is important that you delegate tasks, ie. Allocate one website per person, and one person to create the power point (then send it everyone else once complete). After you've completed this task, you will then move back to your home group, and present your slides + questions to the rest of your group. When the other members of your home group present their power point, you will need to answer the questions they have created. After everyone in your home group has presented, you need to combine your slides to create one presentation - copies of which need to be saved onto all of your laptops. Finally, one group will be randomly selected to display their combined presentation to the class on the projector - you do not need to read to presentation aloud if you feel uncomfortable doing so.

2:35

Then get students to move into their expert groups (split class into half so there is no more than 4 per group - group Conclusion Inform students that we will be continuing the Jigsaw next lesson. Get students to pack up. Let students go when the bell goes, and remind them to push

their chairs in.
