ABSTRACTS AND LEARNER OUTCOMES

Experience Books are the BEST Books

Experience Books are books created for and about a particular child. They have long been powerful language facilitation tools in the field of Auditory-Verbal Therapy. This workshop focuses on how the parent and professional work together to create experience books to foster listening and spoken language. Participants will consider both the childs age and his language level in creating Experience Books that are both engaging and meaningful. Participants will discuss parent strategies that make the most of sharing an Experience Book with their child in listening, language and literacy development.

Strategies to Engage Parents as Partners

It is accepted by therapists that parent commitment is a requisite for positive outcomes. A parent may need explicit teaching and coaching to recognize the power of this level of involvement and then to realize it. The speaker will present strategies and materials designed to empower and engage parents and caregivers within listening and spoken language sessions with young children.. Participants will identify and address parent participation strategies within and between treatment sessions, to maximize the desired outcomes of the parents. Participants will list characteristics for successful parent-professional relationships.

Engaging, Extending and Expanding on Excellent Apps

Apps are now common tools used by SLPs and teachers. What are the pros and cons of using Apps over traditional materials and how can parents and professionals capitalize on the benefits of both? Extension activities will be discussed for some of the presenters favourite apps released to date.

Participants will identify strategies for coaching parents on the most effective ways to incorporate apps into the overall treatment plan. Participants will describe how many apps can promote vocabulary, listening and language and how traditional books and materials can be used in conjunction with them.

Bilingual Done Right

Current research shows great gains for the multi-language learner. This workshop addresses which treatment models work and which do not for the families working in a different language than the community or even the guiding therapist. Strategies will be presented for professionals to help families who choose a multi-language model. Participants will identify what current research says about the benefits of learning more than one language and the best practices used by professionals and parents. Participants will cite strategies for including and empowering parents who work with their children in a mother tongue other than that used by the therapist.

Songs and Stories with Big Payoff

This workshop will focus on practical and fun songs and the stories and listening activities that can go with them. The speaker will present a number of strategies to help coach and guide parents in using songs and stories with their child.. Participants will identify the proven benefits of including music and singing within a treatment program. Participants will cite some of the best practices for reading with and reading to children for excellent outcomes in listening, language and literacy.
