The Australian Government is investing well over $300 million to provide the VAST service, which will benefit thousands of households across Australiaproviding coverage previously not possible. The VAST service is set to replace the old analogue satellite service, Aurora. So if you haven't already made the switch, here are a few things to think about: Your VAST set-top box should be run on a continuous power supply, free of any electrical surges. If you're switching from Aurora, you will still need to buy a VAST set-top box. With nearly 2 million set-top boxes distributed through various industries in Australia, Altech UEC is the premier supplier of products for the Analogue to Digital migrationand a dominant player in the global market with strong presence in Africa, Europe and India Pay TV market. If you are however, switching from Aurora, you will likely be able to use your existing satellite dishprovided it is equipped with a wideband low noise block (lnb) down converter. Satellite dishes purchased in the last five or so years are likely to already have a wideband lnb. For most areas in Australia a 65-85cm dish is sufficient to receive the signal for this service. We recommend that viewers who are currently using a 11300 LNBF on the Aurora service change to a 10700 LNBF. For Aurora viewers, no dish realignment is necessary to receive this service.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DIGITAL SIGNAL METER

By just looking at an analogue TV picture we can differentiate between a raft of signal issues, while digital TV will give us either no picture, pixelation or a perfectly clear picture. To understand digital TV signal, you need a digital meter. So how do you choose a meter? Below are the most popular models available. The first is the AITVF digital meter for people like caravanners. To receive digital TV, signal strength needs to be between 50dB to 80dB (ideally around 66dB). That means that illuminated LED indicators should hopefully equal TV signal! Step up to the DIGIAIRDB and we get a more accurate indication of the signal strength (dB). You will get a number, rather than an LED indicating a range. Like the AITVF, it still won't give us an idea of the quality of the signal. The DIGIAIRPRO could well be Australia's most popular meter. It satisfies the government's requirement of measuring signal strength (dB) and signal quality (pre-BER, post-BER and MER) as well as a host of nifty features like spectrum analysis, 20dB attenuator function, the ability to supply voltage to say the masthead amplifier and programmable channel plans. The Radio Parts Digiair Pro is the only model to include Australia specific software and special low self-discharge NiMh rechargeable batteries. At the time of writing, only the Rover meters are approved for Foxtel jobs and range from around $3k, $5k, $6k to $8k.
