Chronicle
September September 2013 No. 9

A monthly chronicle to your home bringing you the news from St. Lukes United Methodist Church
Meanwhile, the word of God continued to spread, and there were many new believers. Acts 12:24
Greetings StL Saints! It is the beginning of one of the most anticipated, exciting times of the year. No, I dont mean the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons, or the stretch run to the Fall Classic by the other StL (the Cardinals), though all three make September one of my favorite months. Im talking about the kickoff to the fall season at church. September is going to be exciting at St. Lukes! On September 7, we will be gathering at the church from 9 10:30 am, and doing a prayer walk around the parking lot and throughout the building focusing on worship, reconciliation, discipleship and witness. Im anticipating many guests worshipping God with us in September. We want to be ready offering them the same reconciliation and discipleship opportunities weve realized as Disciples of Jesus Christ who call St. Lukes home. So, the Prayer Walk is a form of worship that will prepare us to witness. Speaking of witness, from 11 am 1 pm, we will be at Drost Park for an H2Outreach. This means we will be setting up a table of water bottles, cookies, and some portable StL UMC info to give to any walkers, runners, and bikers along the trail. Personal invitations to come to church are the most powerful invitations, so the connections we make on that Saturday should be supplemented by each of us also inviting neighbors to St. Lukes as well. Thats a major emphasis for Grandparents Sunday, September 8. Grandparents are encouraged to invite grandchildren and grandchildren are encouraged to invite grandparents to worship at either 8 am or 1030 am and a fellowship meal at 12 pm thats a bit of an obvious angle. Yet, what if we went a bit further? Some dont have grandchildren or grandparents to invite or who would be able to attend for a variety of reasons. Yet, do we know of unchurched children in our area who would benefit from having a Christian grandparent-like mentor or of unchurched adults in our area who would appreciate an invitation from a church that values and has great ministry opportunities for children of God of all ages? Remember, a neighbor is more likely to move from first-time guest to second-time guest, and then from family member to Disciple of Jesus Christ when you and I we invite them! A sample of other September events: The church will be hosting a Five Practices for Fruitful Congregations seminar on Risk-Taking Mission and Service for area UMCs on Saturday, September 14. On Sunday, September 22, Mary and Wes Harris will offer an Information Session at 12 PM and 6 PM for Financial Peace University which is set to begin on Sunday September 29, at 6 pm. This class is intentionally meant for our whole Maryville-area community, so invite neighbors in need of more financial peace to come! Tuesday, September 24, from 6-8 pm is Tailgate Tuesday. Lets focus even more so on outreach and evangelism as we invite neighbors to join us that night. Its a great opportunity in general, and specifically, its an outstanding way to alert neighbors of our HUGE Fall Kickoff Sunday, September 29. That Sunday will include great worship and the revealing of a key 4-part, 4-month sermon series, the beginning of additional ministry opportunities including the introduction of exciting small groups for Jr. and Sr. High students, and the 3rd Annual St. Lukes Glory Open Golf Tournament (another fine Invite-a-Neighbor opportunity!). Did I mention September is going to be an exciting month at St. Lukes!? Throughout the area, state, country, and around the world the word of God will continue to spread in September and many will come to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior following as Disciples who go out to witness and make new Disciples. I cant wait to see how St. Lukes will take part in this awesome ministry! Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Will willcampbell@ourstlukes.org

Discipleship
The women of the Word (W.O.W) group will be celebrating September birthdays at Eckerts Restaurant in Belleville. We will leave at 9:15 AM on Wednesday, September 4 and return at 11:30 AM. All ladies are invited; please RSVP with Karen (696-9514) karenvollmar@ourstlukes.org or by Monday, September 2. Youth group fall kick-off will begin Sunday, September 8 at 6:00 PM. We will meet for dinner and a movie in the church fellowship hall. Bring a friend and lets get started on a great year in Christ! Please mark your calendars for Safe Sanctuary training, everyone, 18 years and older, currently helping or who want to help with children and youth ministries must make one of these two meetings, Tuesday, September 17 at 6:00 PM or Sunday, October 6 right after late service. The new school year always brings changes and it is the same with church. We are excited that our children will be included in the beginning part of our services starting September 22. Parents will pick up their children after Sunday school and take them to the sanctuary to experience family worship together. Joy Jumpers through second grade will be dismissed to Children church after the childrens message. Cribs for Christ will still be offered during the entire church time. Volunteers will continue to come and sit with the children during the Childrens message.

From Our Director Worship Arts

Hey Church Family! Wow! What an amazing first few weeks this has been! Being welcomed into my new church "home" with such warm smiles, friendly introductions, and kind, encouraging words has been such a blessing. I can't wait to meet each of you personally (Let's grab coffee and chat sometime!), but in the meantime, I'd love to share with you a little about myself. I grew up in the small, central Illinois town of Carrollton, and I have been singing for as long as I could make noise. In eighth grade, I received my first guitar as a Christmas gift, and the rest is history for me. In 2004, I began traveling with Harvest Ministry Teams based out of Troy, Illinois. Since then, I have been playing music vocationally in churches and recreationally in various music sideprojects. Currently, I play in a band, creatively titled "Jeff Allen Band." You can check us out at jeffallenband.com. My wife, Brittani, and I were married in 2010 and live in Belleville, Illinois with our two cats. We love to ride our motorcycle, go to Busch Stadium (Go Cards!), and play music together. Brittani is a full time hair stylist and also works as the Family Ministry Coordinator at The Gathering United Methodist Church's multisite in Clayton, Missouri. Nearly a decade of serving God's people has given me an appreciation for the local church and all she has for her local community. I am excited to see what God has in store for all of us at St. Luke's and pray that God continues to grow St. Luke's as a vibrant, Spirit-filled, body of worshipers. Let's change the world together! Mission News
Our August/September Mission Focus is school supplies for A. J. Williams School in Liberia. This school is the one we helped build and then dedicate on our two mission trips to Liberia. Please place your items in the barrel in the narthex . Please remember to include teacher supplies: chalk, chalkboard erasers, red pens, room dcor in the barrel. Im sure they would appreciate it. We are still collecting new Bibles, fabric, sewing kits, sewing scissors, childrens books, reading glasses, new shoes, and new clothing items that are appropriate for Liberia. We ask that you do not put in any food items as they are not shippable in the barrels we will be using. The collection will continue until the barrels are full. You will find our Barrels of Love in the narthex and the fellowship hall. Our Yearly Mission Focus is the Maryville Food Pantry. There is still time to pick up a brown bag in the narthex and fill it with the items listed. Remember to check the expiration date; it needs to be after November 2013. The United Methodist Men are hosting a work trip to the Midwest Distribution Center in Chatham, Illinois on Saturday, September 21. We will leave from St. Luke's at 7:30 AM and expect to return about 2:00, stopping for lunch on the way home. At the MMDC, we will be organizing disaster-relief supplies and preparing shipments. Tours of the facility will be available. This trip is open to adults, youth over 16, and supervised younger people. For more information, and to sign up, contact Del Tegtmeier (344-8830) or John Ashbrook (314-374-8919).
