Project 4: The Wheel

Objective: To utilize the wheel to make intentionally formed bowls. To learn how to trim a foot into a wheel thrown form. To apply surface detail rendering the forms a cohesive set.

Key Terms Repetition: Repeating same or like elements Rhythm: When the same or like elements shapes, colors, or a regular pattern of any kind are repeated over and over again in a composition, a visual rhythm will result. Like the beat of a drum your eye rises and falls to the elements. Unity: The use of repetition and rhythm to unify the different elements of the work creating a consistency. Variety: Changes in the composition that sustain the viewers interest. Could be different angle, point of view, color, texture etc. Motif: a distinctive and recurring form, shape, figure, etc., in a design, as in a painting or on wallpaper. Pattern: an arrangement of repeated or corresponding parts, decorative motifs, etc Design Problem 1 You are to use the wheel as a tool in creating form. You will choose 1 bowl form and repeat it to the best of your ability. Design Problem 2 In addition to the repeated form of your bowls, you will employ the use of stamps, slips, inlay, carving or/and scraffito to create a layer of surface pattern. The surface design may complement or contrast the sculptural form. It may be sparse or abundant. It cannot however be arbitrarily placed. Consider ideas of repetition, rhythm, unity and variety for your surface design while reacting to the bowl form. Some considerations for surface design: color, type of line (geometric, curvilinear), placement, orientation, pattern/texture. Procedure: 1. You are to decide upon 1 bowl form and attempt to repeat it. 2. 10 bowls are to be thrown, left to set up and trimmed at the leather hard stage of clay. (details in class) 3. Make at least 7 sketches of your surface design. You may create your own motif / pattern or find an existing one. Develop surface and color using wet surface techniques. Considerations: How will you divide the space of your repeated elements? Will one continuous design run over the entire surface of all the bowls or will each bowl have the same design in the same place? Will your motif run freely over the form or be contained within it? 4. Choose 6 of your strongest bowls to apply your surface design. 5. Once glaze fired you will choose the strongest 4 of the 6 bowls to present for critique. Relationship between the 4 bowls: Organization, difficulty and creativity of surface design. Do you use the principles of design? Do the 4 bowls make a cohesive set? Quality of surface design: Is the surface design clean and intentional? Did you use a wet surface technique? Correct application of glaze: Did you apply the appropriate thickness? Did you apply the glaze according to rules of food safety and viscosity of the glaze?
