A FRESH LOOK
Awards were announced at a public reception for the FRESH LOOK art competition on Saturday August 3. Our juror of awards was Harriet Marshall Goode of Rock Hill, SC. Said Ms. Goode of our exhibit It was exciting to see the all the artwork submitted for this competition, and I understand it is a record number for SAS. Your organization is doing things the right way and I commend you for being so professional and so welcoming of new artists. Winners with comments by Ms. Goode: First Place went to Valerie Pinkerton Kramer for The Time Keeper oil. This large, colorful painting is extraordinarily well done by an artist who has a deep understanding of the figure and the medium. The strong design encourages the viewers eyes to travel around the picture plane and hover over certain parts of it. It makes the viewer wonder about the meaning. Well done. Very nice work! Second Place went to Susan Carlisle Bell for Tommy & Sam, Best Friends opaque watercolor. The loose, gestural quality of this painting captured my attention in my first pass through the galleries. The understated way the artist has handled the subject and the medium suggests he/she is an experienced, mature painter. Third Place went to Lucy Warlick for Heading Home acrylic. This large, impressionistic painting with ancient horse, wagon and man evoke times past. I liked the simplicity of the landscape, which made me wonder if that blue in the background is water or just distant land. But it really doesnt matter. This is a very nice painting that viewers will enjoy for many years. Timeless. Merit Awards went to: Renee Calhoun Matthews for Not-a-Belladonna clay. Lori McAdams Dream of the Girl with the Goldfish Shoes colored pencil. Brenda Beard Bostian for In Quarry Thicket etching. Fifty- two artists entered 138 pieces of artwork in the show.
