TECHNIQUE DETAILS
This Technique is prepared to meet the requirements of ASME V 2001 for the Magnetic Particle Inspection of Magnetic materials using an electromagnet and colour contrast method.(Longitudinal Magnetic Flow) 1) EQUIPMENT Equipment Manufacture: Magnaflux or equivalent Model and/or Type: Y6 A/C Yoke or equivalent with adjustable poles - see 8(a) 2) SURFACE PREPARATION Surface Condition: Sufficient to allow good electrical conductivity and test scrutiny - See Special Instruction 8(b) Maximum Surface Temperature: A) Wet method - 57C B) Dry Powder Method - 230C 3) TEST MATERIALS -CONSUMABLES Contrast Coat Paint: Johnson & Allen NPT16 or equivalent to - See Instruction (h) Contrast Coat Application: Fine Spray/application ensuring thin even coating on test area Magnetic Ink : A) Wet -Johnson & Allen Neocol B or equivalent or B) Dry- Johnson & Allen Neopowder or equivalent. Suspension Fluid: A)Paraffin or water - See special Instruction 8(c) B) None Magnetic Ink Application: Spray prior to and during current energisation allowing time for indications to form. Care must be taken so as not to wash away indications by applying Ink after removal of magnetic field. 4) MAGNETISING TECHNIQUE Magnetising Method: A/C Electromagnet - Longitudinal Magnetic Flow Pole Spacing Range: 75 mm (min) to 150 mm (max) Coverage: The area to be inspected shall be magnetised in at least two approximately perpendicular directions unless otherwise specified. See Special Instruction 8(d) Current Application time: 5 - 7 seconds intermittently Magnetic Field Verification: See Special Instructions 8(a) & 8(e) 5) VIEWING CONDITIONS Minimum Background Illumination: -See Special Instruction 8(f) 6) POST TEST CLEANING / DRYING / DE-MAGNETISATION Post Test De-Magnetisation: Not normally required due to low levels of residual magnetism when using electromagnets. When specifically requested the Electromagnetic withdrawal method shall be used. Post Test Cleaning Method: Wipe with solvent dampened cloths Post Test Drying: Natural Evaporation (wipe assisted where required) 7) ACCEPTANCE STANDARD / SPECIFICATION To Be Specified by client prior to contract. 8) SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS a) AC Electromagnets should be checked daily when in use. They should be capable of lifting a 4.5 Kg test weight at the maximum Pole spacing. b) Satisfactory results may be obtained when the surfaces are in the as welded, as rolled, as cast or as forged conditions. However, surface preparation by grinding or machining may be necessary where surface irregularities could mask indications due to discontinuities. Prior to magnetic particle examination, the surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within 25mm shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux and spatter, oil or other extraneous matter that could interfere with the examination. Cleaning may be accomplished using detergents, organic solvents, descaling solutions, paint removers, vapour degreasing, sand or grit blasting or ultrasonic cleaning methods. c) When using Water based inks, care should be taken to ensure rust prevention by means of applying a suitable protective coating (de-watering oil) where required. d) To ensure maximum defect detection, the area under inspection shall be tested in at least two directions approximately perpendicular to each other. The Heat Affected Zone (approx. 25 mm on each side of the weld) should also be considered. (e) The direction of the magnetic field shall be verified by using a flux indicator, in conjunction with the lift test in (a) above or by some other equivalent means. f) The level of illumination achieved by either daylight or artificial lighting, shall be checked by means of a white light meter, prior to commencing activities or following any change in conditions. The level shall not be less than 1000 lux. This may be lowered to 500 Lux by prior agreement. g) Inspectors/ Technicians shall be qualified to PCN II/ ASNT II/ Mil Std. 410E II or agreed equivalent. h) When the Dry Powder Method (B) is used, the colour of the powder shall provide sufficient contrast with the test surface. White Background paint shall , generally, not be used with this method. i) The Dry Powder Method is less sensitive than Wet Particles and should only be normally used when: 1) Test Surface Temperature Exceeds 57C 2) Where the application of liquids is not conducive with the environment / component. 3) Where specifically requested by the Client
