UTEP Climbs to #7 in National University Rankings

The University of Texas at El Paso

has broken into the Top 10 of a national ranking focused on true public interest and based on social mobility, research and community service. Washington Monthly announced today that UTEP will be rated #7 overall in its 2013 College Rankings to be published Sept. 4. The University, which begins its 2013 fall semester today, is ranked between Stanford (#6) and Harvard (#8). UTEP moved up five slots from the previous year and earned the top spot in the social mobility category for the second year in a row. Social mobility is described as recruiting and graduating students of modest means, and is a measure of how well the school performs as an engine of social mobility. The research component includes annual expenditures (in excess of $76 million) and the number of undergraduates who continue to earn doctoral degrees. The service rating is based on how students are taught to give back to the community whether through volunteer hours or participation in community service organizations, including ROTC. We are extremely pleased with the latest Washington Monthly rankings because they reflect the growing national validation of the important work that has been under way at UTEP, President Diana Natalicio said. This ranking recognizes UTEPs success in fulfilling our public research university mission by successfully offering both access and excellence to the highly talented and mostly first-generation Hispanic students we serve. Achieving both affordability and high quality in a low-resource setting such as the U.S.-Mexico border region requires a deep commitment by all faculty and staff to ensure that students who entrust us with their aspirations are given every opportunity not only to pursue them, but to participate in enriched educational experiences on our campus that will prepare them to compete successfully with their peers from across the globe, President Natalicio added. As we celebrate UTEPs Centennial next year, were looking forward to continuing to serve as a model and cat-

alyst for change in public higher education in the 21st century. President Natalicio will participate in a Sept. 4 panel discussion organized by Washington Monthly to discuss higher education issues reflected in the rankings. In its introduction to the rankings, the magazines editors praised UTEP for enrolling and graduating a large number of low-income students. More than half of UTEPs almost 23,000 students 12,116 received a Pell Grant during the 2012-13 academic year, and 75 percent received some form of financial aid. Our rankings aim to identify institutions that are acting on behalf of the true public interest, the editors wrote. They later added that UTEP enrolls large numbers of low-income students and graduates more of them than the economic and academic profiles of their students would predict, while charging the kind of affordable tuition that is increasingly rare. This is the eighth year that the publication, an investigative, system-analysis periodical based in Washington, D.C., has produced college rankings. The magazine says the rankings reward schools for, among other things, recruiting and graduating students of modest means in conscious contrast to the U.S. News & World Report. Fort Bliss Announces Community Ammunition Amnesty Day

FORT BLISS, TEXAS Fort Bliss officials have set aside Friday, August 30, 2013, as Ammunition Amnesty Day in El Paso County. In an effort to better control and account for small arms ammunition and explosives that have been found, misplaced or stolen, as well as to prevent injury or death from handling these items, the Directorate of Logistics, Ammunition Branch will conduct an Ammunition Amnesty Day for Fort Bliss and the El Paso Community. The objective is to encourage soldiers and civilians to turn in contraband items without harassment or penalty from the government. No criminal charges related to any hazardous materials reported and/or collected will be filed against residents or soldiers who participate in the program. The collection will take place between 8a.m. and 3p.m. at the Texas Army National Guard Armory, at 9100 Gateway North at Hondo Pass. Directional signs will be posted in the vicinity of that location on the day of the event. I Love September
September is my favorite month of the year. The reason is two-fold. We rarely see triple digit temperatures and we have enough rain and storms on average for the month to nourish my farm and keep things exciting at the office. Below is the total number of triple digits per month since 1970. As you can see over the past 40 years weve only had one year where we have more than three triple digit days. Typically we dont see any 100 degree days.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You'll plan carefully what to say and do. Some people are good at self-monitoring, because they are sensitive to how others see them. You self-monitor because you care about how others are feeling and want them to have a good experience, not because you are overly concerned with how you are being perceived. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). If you are in an unfamiliar circumstance and don't know how to behave, the first instinct is usually to copy others. Unfortunately, the "others" involved may not know what they are doing or why. You'll go far using your moral compass and all of your powers of reason to navigate toward those who can really help you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The natural human response is to back away from a failure and take credit for a hit. The superhuman response is to own whatever contribution is yours, whether the end result is a winner or a loser. It's all a learning process, and this is only the first round of the game. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). To believe another person is right and to follow suit is one thing. To comply with a person because you're afraid of ridicule or rejection is another thing entirely. Should I Keep My Promise?

DR. WALLACE: While on vacation this summer, I met a really nice guy in Florida at the beach. We saw each other every day for two straight weeks. The day that I was returning home with my family, we told each other that we were in love and promised not to date others. Well, now that I'm home I'm sorry that I made that promise. I still like this boy, but I don't like the idea of not dating guys in my school. In fact, I don't even know if I will ever see Josh again. I know that I should contact him and tell him how I feel, but I think that would hurt his feelings. What should I do? My sister thinks that I made a promise and that I should keep it. Now that you are so far away, he, too might be having second thoughts about maintaining a

A thoughtful guide for would-be veterinarians

Studies show that veterinarian is a profession often chosen in childhood, and for many of those goal-oriented youngsters, nothing will change their minds: not keen competition, not years of schooling, not poor job prospects and not the potential for carrying forward a crushing burden of student-loan debt that may prevent young professionals from owning their own practices, buying a home or starting a family. Dog parks continue to grow in popularity

The concept of a public park dedicated for use by off-leash dogs and their owners is a relatively new one, but it has been popular from the start. The nonprofit Trust for Public Land notes that in 2010 there were 569 off-leash dog parks in the 100 largest cities, and that the growth in the number of dog parks has been 10 times greater than the number of parks dedicated to general use. Q: I know we're having a heat
wave, but I have to think about fireplaces now! We are remodeling, adding a Great Room downstairs and a new master bedroom up. The Great Room will have a real wood-burning fireplace, but I don't want to deal with ashes and soot in our bedroom.

Matt Kenseth emerges from mid-season doldrums to claim victory in IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway
As NASCARs Sprint Cup Series drivers head into the toughest 12 weeks of the season, some drivers, like Matt Kenseth and Joey Logano, are hot, while others, like five-time champion Jimmie Johnson, are not. Kenseth emerged from some mid-season doldrums to score a strong win at Bristol Motor Speedway Saturday night, giving him five wins for the season, which translates to 15 bonus points when the standings are reset after the Sept. 7 race at Richmond International Raceway. Johnson, on the other hand, has the series points lead heading into Sunday nights AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but hes had a rough month. Since his runner-up finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 28, hes seen his points lead over second place drop from 75 to 18. In the past two weeks hes had finishes of 40th and 36th, due to a blown engine at Michigan and a crash at Bristol. For Kenseth, in his first season at Joe Gibbs Racing, his Bristol performance especially holding off Kasey Kahne at the end even though Kahne had fresher tires has him feeling a sense of momentum heading into the final two weeks of the regular season and on into the Chase. I think this [Bristol] weekend was huge for us, Kenseth said. Even if again next week. But he said the most important thing is what happens during the Chase. Once the Chase starts, it is its own animal. So well just wait and see what happens during those 10 [races], he said. Logano also appears to be gaining steam at a good time. He followed up his Michigan win with a powerful run at Bristol, where he bounced back from an early crash and drove his patched-up Ford to a fifth-place finish. That was the hardest-fought topfive Ive ever had in my life, Logano said. We deserve to make this Chase, and if we keep doing this on days that theyre trying to put us down, we deserve it. Since finishing 40th at New Hampshire on July 14, Logano hasnt finished worse than eighth and has moved from 18th in the standings to 10th. A late-race melee at Bristol put a damper on the Chase hopes of several drivers on the bubble of securing a berth for the title run. Loganos teammate, reigning Cup champion Brad Keselowski, was among those collected when Brian Vickers and Denny Hamlin collided with 53 laps to go. Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Newman also were involved, as was Kevin Harvick, whose Chase spot is all but assured due to his position in points, fourth, and the fact that he has a win this season. Keselowski dropped three spots in points, to 11th, four behind Logano. Truex dropped from 12th to 14th in the standings. Newman returned to the track and drove his damaged racer to a 21st-place finish, which left him 15th in the standings. Kurt Busch dropped from ninth to 12th in the standings after losing laps while a damaged hub was replaced on his No. 78 Chevrolet, but hes just six points out of 10th place. Continues on next page

we would have run second and got beat at the end ... at least for me, it would have been a very encouraging weekend. It would have been a shot in our arm, like man, we had all our speed back. Hopefully that gives you momentum. The next 12 weeks are the most important 12 weeks of the season, so I feel like: Approach every race the same. Go out with the idea of trying to qualify the best you can and prepare like youre going to go try to win the race. For Johnson, it was another missed chance to get some mojo of his own going as he heads into the Chase. His points position has him locked into a Chase berth, but winning the regular season offers no reward come Chase time, as all 12 Chase drivers start with the same number of points, plus three bonus points for each regular season win for the top 10. This racing stuff happens, Johnson said. Luckily, we had a big points lead that we can kind of deal with right now. We certainly want to clean things up and have some great finishes rolling into the Chase. Well keep after it, and be back

Kurt Busch headed to StewartHaas Racing in 2014

Kurt Busch is headed to Stewart-Haas Racing, beginning in 2014. Busch told reporters on Monday that hes signed on to join team co-owner Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick and Danica Patrick. Busch currently drives the No. 78 Chevrolet for Furniture Row Racing and is 12th in the Sprint Cup standings, well within reach of a berth for the Chase. Joe Garone, general man- Kurt Busch ager of Furniture Row Racing, said in a team release that he expects his team to continue its strong run despite the impending departure of Busch, a former Cup champion and 24-time winner on NASCARs elite circuit. Right now, the main focus for Kurt and the team is to qualify for the Chase and contend for the 2013 championship, Garone said. Furniture Row Racings technical and engineering programs, along with a talented road crew, have made great strides this season, which have been evident with the consistently fast race cars that we have brought to the track week in and week out. We, along with our technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing, are deeply committed to continuing the work in progress. Garone said his team is in the process of searching for a driver for 2014 and beyond.

That 20 points really had me pretty nervous, Earnhardt said. Hopefully, if we can put a good one together next week, something similar or better than this, we will definitely go to Richmond a lot more comfortable. For Newman, whose best chance to make the Chase appears to be through a wild card berth made possible by his victory in the Brickyard 400, every single point is important. We need to score maximum points at each race, he said. Even on nights like [Bristol], its important that we dont give up. Well keep fighting until the final lap at Richmond.

Its hard and sad to believe that the two-door coupe is becoming an endangered specious in the automotive industry. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Toyota Camry Solara are long gone and Nissans Altima Coupe, well it recently met its fate as Nissan just announced there will be no 2014 model. And Honda they dropped the Prelude way back in 2001, leaving us with just the two door version of the popular Accord, simply known as the Coupe. Now entering its ninth generation, the Accord is all-new for 2013 and the Accord Coupe, while practically a sole survivor in this market continues to get better with age.

Looking identical to the concept car Honda showed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, the Honda Accord Coupe is a real attention-getter. The Coupe shares no body panels with the more conservative Accord sedan - instead it has a sharply raised beltline and flows into a pleasingly sloped wedge. Cool, racy-looking black cutouts on the rear bumper add flare to the Coupe but serve no other purpose. Overall, the new Accord Coupe is about 3.6 inches smaller than the car it replaces. Inside, the Coupe sports an interior that is quite inviting. The front seats are excellent, both

in support and comfort. The back seats, never a strong point in a coupe, welcome passengers, even those that hit the sixfoot mark. When not in use, the rear seatbacks fold to expand the trunk size. The gauges are big and bright, making them visible in all conditions and the center stack is loaded with buttons, knobs and screens. My test vehicle was equipped with the navigation system, which uses an iDrivelike knob, making it a bit more challenging to use than it should be. But one thing Honda hasnt lost is the ability to fit the Accord Coupe with plenty of storage bins, cubby holes .. Continues on next page

Continued from page 28...and cupholders. In all, the interior is setup very nicely without looking the least bit generic. The heart and soul of the Honda Accord Coupe lies within, though. Get the optional VTEC 3.5 liter V6 engine and you have the most powerful Accord ever. All numbers with the V6 engine are up. Horsepower rises from 268 hp to 278 hp while torque is increased to 252 lb-ft up from 248 lb-ft. Also up is fuel economy numbers. The last V6 Accord Coupe managed to get 19 mpg / city and 29 mpg / highway. The new, more powerful V6 tops that by getting 21 mpg / city and 32 mpg / highway. Both those figures are with automatic transmissions, with the new Accord now benefiting with having six gears. A sixspeed manual is still available with the Accord Coupe. The base engine for the Accord Coupe continues to be a 2.4 liter four-cylinder, but its allnew for 2013. It makes 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque and gets 27 mpg / city and 36 mpg on the highway. The ride and drive of my automatic V6 equipped Accord Coupe really impressed me probably because I am so used to bland driving experiences from Accords of the past. The new Accord Coupe really makes the driver feel connected to the road and in touch with the vehicle. The four-wheel independent system communicates nicely with the driver and the ride, although a little stiffer than in the sedan, wasnt at all bothersome. Im not a huge fan of front-wheel drive sports cars, mainly because they tend to understeer when driven hard, but not so with this Accord. The folks at Honda seemed to dial out the understeer and leave the driver in total control. A feature that I found really interesting was Hondas new blind-spot camera that displays the right-side blind spot on the dashboard screen. It can be activate two different ways by using your right side signal indicator (blinker) or by pushing a button at the end of the turn signal stalk. Its a great aid in seeing whats in your blind spot and works very well. Pricing for Accord Coupe start in the $24,000 range and can go beyond $33,000 for a fully decked out one. Those are reasonable prices, and when you consider that the Accord Coupe continues to defy extinction, it may actually be a bargain.

Greg Biffle maintains wait-and-see approach toward Gen-6 car and new tire compound at Atlanta Motor Speedway
Last year when Greg Biffle arrived at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the AdvoCare 500, he was the series points leader and assured of a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. But a lot has changed in a years time, including the characteristics of the cars and tires that will be run at Atlanta this year. Biffle is one of the drivers on the Chase bubble, counting on a strong run at AMS to propel them into the 10-race, championship-deciding Chase, which begins after the Sept. 7 race at Richmond International Raceway. Hes ninth in the standings, with one win, but just 17 points ahead of 11th-place Brad Keselowski with two more races, including Atlanta, to run before the start of the Chase. Adding drama to the AMS event is the fact that the race is the first at the track for NASCARs new Generation 6 race car, and Goodyear has developed a right-side tire that has two tread compounds to help drivers deal with AMS worn asphalt, which has been in place since 1997. So much is different from last year, said Biffle, who finished ninth in Saturdays IRWIN Tools Night race at Bristol Motor Speedway. These Gen-6 Biffle said hes heard good reports from his fellow drivers who tested the new AMS tire compound, but hes taking a wait-and-see attitude about it. You never know until you get there and you get on the tire and the track gets rubbered in, he said. Im looking forward to see how it holds up. Although his only win at AMS came in 2003 in a Nationwide Series race, and in a Chevrolet, he said the track is among his favorites. Its a fun race track, he said. I like that place. We havent had as much success there as weve had at other mile-and-a-half tracks, but that could change with this Gen-6 car and the things were doing with it. Another question heading into the AMS race is which drivers and teams are hot and which are not as we approach the final two races of the regular season. Biffle said thats something that changes from week to week. Its not like anybodys on fire, he said. A lot of it is due to this new car. For the next few years, well still be learning it.
