Course Description This is a survey course of general chemistry for students who do not intend to major in science or engineering and may not be substituted for Chemistry 111. Lecture will emphasize the facts, principles, and theories of general chemistry including math operations, matter and energy, atomic structure, symbols and formulas, nomenclature, the periodic table, bonding concepts, equations, reactions, stoichiometry, gas laws, phases of matter, solutions, pH and equilibrium reactions. Prerequisites One year high school algebra or Mth 098, 100 or 116 or equivalent Math placement score. Class Policies 1. Attendance: Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance should withdraw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the students ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from the class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. This course is an internet course, and there are no required on-campus meetings. However, you should log into the class on a regular basis to keep up with class developments. You are responsible for keeping track of and meeting quiz, exam and assignment due dates. On-Line Quizzes: There are ten online quizzes worth a total of 400 points. The first five quizzes must be completed before the midterm exam and the second set before the final exam. If a student does better on the midterm than they have done on the quizzes, the midterm score will be substituted for the quiz scores. Similarly, the final exam score will be substituted for the second set of quiz scores if the final exam score is higher. However, quiz scores will NOT be substituted for a poor exam score.
