The longboat waits at the Miller Ferry dock on Catawba, with Bob Reynolds, Chris Galvin and Sam Halstead.

Perrys Longboat to Put-in-Bay

On Friday evenings 6:30 p.m. Miller Ferry from the Catawba dock the replica of Perrys longboat took a ride to Putin-Bay. The longboat, funded by the Perry Group, constructed from plans by Melbourne Smith of Annapolis from the original plans that were with the tall ship Niagaras plans, and built by John Riddle of Riddle Boatworks in Vermilion, was transported in style by Sam Halsteads gleaming 1936 Dodge truck. The longboats arrival was greeted at Put-in-Bay by Peter Huston of the Perry Group, who oversaw the construction of the longboat, and a parade of antique vehicles that led the boat into town. Riding with the longboat was Jeremy Meier, who has been portraying Oliver Hazard Perry in a one-man show that he researched and created for the Ohio Humanities

Council. Meier, theater professor at Owens Community College, has become very knowledgeable about all things Oliver Hazard Perry. After the longboats welcoming festivities, Meier was looking forward to celebrating his own 36th birthday Friday evening.

Bicentennial Celebration is here

BY DONNA LUEKE It has been 200 years since there has been such a momentous gathering of people and ships on the north coast of Ohio. In 1813, in the waters off of South Bass Island, there was a great naval battle. For the next dozen days we celebrate that battles legacy of peace. In the past 200 years, the battles fought in our peaceful Lake Erie waters have largely been confined to those of fishermen vs. walleye. On the mainland and on the islands there will be tall ships and bands, reenactments, food, crafts, parades, musicians, drama, a road race, a fishing derby, vintage aircraft and ships and costumes, fireworks, a wedding, canon fire and a roving pirate. Hundreds of volunteers (200 in Port Clinton alone), countless hours of planning and the generosity of sponsors all are contributing to this grand party. All that re-

Playfair, Pathfinder, Perch, Peach, Pierogis and Polka

Looking forward to a nice, quiet Labor Day weekend here in good ol Port Clinton! Not much happening! Only the arrival of 16 Tall Ships in the western basin of Lake Erie, two of which will dock in Port Clinton (Playfair and Pathfinder), another will dock at CIC. Then there is the concert of the Ohio State University Marching Band on Sunday morning at the Tall Ships Festival site at Waterworks Park. Oh, lets not forget the concert given by the U.S. Navy Band on Saturday evening. Did I forget to mention the Peach, Perch, Pierogi and Polka Festival at the Denny Bergeman K of C Hall on E. Perry Street all weekend long? If you get boredthere is always the Rise Above exhibit at Carl Keller Airfield east of Port Clinton on State Road, a traveling exhibit telling the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, one of whom actually lives among us, Harold Brown. Then, there is the small item of the Annual Green Island Race at Port Clinton Yacht Club. Boats arrive on Saturday afternoon and will leave for the race early Sunday morning, hopefully led out of the mouth of the Portage River by the two visiting Tall Ships which should create a bit of a boat parade. A good viewing spot to watch the start of the Green Island Race would be on the beaches just west of Port Clinton on W. Lakeshore Drive. The entire weekend schedule

of events can be found on page 3B in our Coastlines special section this week. What a weekend!

Speaking of docks, there is a new boating destination in Ottawa County. It is Oak Harbor. The new floating docks are just part of recent improvements in downtown Oak Harbor that have been accomplished through the Downtown Revitalization Committee. Future downtown and riverfront developments are being planned at their bi-weekly meetings. Their goal is to complete the projects without using taxpayer dollars and donations have funded the projects thus far. The Committee is
n

conducting a survey of the community and those will be available at various locations throughout Oak Harbor in the coming weeks. For more information, contact Committee Chairman Mike Shadoan at 419-706-6034.

third of the restaurants/hotels in Port Clinton close in the late fall/winter, unlike the town of Wooster. The middle class person cannot support an abundance of 5 star restaurants. Suggestion: Spend the money on revamping Madison Street if you want to have a spending spree. Revitalize the beautiful historic downtown buildings. Next point. Why the condos in Waterworks park? We live in a condo association with a beach that is private property. Who is to say that these new condo builders are going to make sure that the public has access to the waterfront as promised. Promises are always broken after tax abatements and contracts are lost in the system. Bottom line is, Port Clinton will never become a big city like Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, etc. Port Clinton should continue to be a quaint, friendly tourist town. Whats wrong with that? Ask Sheriff Andy Taylor and Aunt Bea of Mayberry, R.F.D. Continue to support your local businesses. We do and it is fun in the doing. Mark and Melanie Misencik

Sound Offs
As my wife and I were walking through downtown Port Clinton the night of Aug. 21 we were struck by the lack of care (watering) that some of the large planters were receiving. Plants in some of the planters looked very nice, indicating that some business owners were caring for them. Others, however, (including several located in front of some of the few remaining viable businesses downtown) looked very sad. The flowers were not in good shape and not very attractive. Theres been a lot of talk recently about the downtown area, and about how it can be improved. It seemed to us that the simple act of business owners watering the planters on the sidewalks in front of their locations (or those adjacent to their businesses) would be a good start. It wouldnt take more than a couple of minutes every couple of days when the weather turns dry. Ronnie Hall

In response to the Aug. 15 Beacon article regarding the Waterworks Park development, we would like to make a couple of comments regarding why the million dollar development would not be conducive for full and part-time residents. Most residents along E. Perry Street are against the development and so are we. We love the small town ambience and flavor of the city and always feel welcome and privileged to be part of this town on the Lake Erie shore. This is heaven for us. The disturbance of the community/ city would be an unwelcoming event and make it not ours or any middle class folks choice of choosing. Who is going to support the new businesses when there are vacant properties and unused beautiful buildings and businesses on Madison Street? Has the development committee taken a real hard look around other than their own pocketbooks? The opportunitist compared our town to Wooster, OH. Wooster is a much bigger town than Port Clinton and has a college population. Port Clinton is a seasonal town and has a 6,000 year round population compared to Woosters population of 30,000. The article mentioned 5 star restaurants. What about the current 5 star restaurants that Port Clinton already has? We have enough. We as part-time residents only visit the high 5 establishments on special occasions. Futhermore, a

New fence at Otterbein

The Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Solid Waste District provided a grant to Otterbein North Shore, Marblehead, to replace a deteriorating wooden fence that surrounded the generator, recycling and trash containers. A requirement of the grant was that the fence had to be made of recycled product. Director of Environmental Services Wes Walton did the research to find a fence that is made of 100% recycled steel with recycled plastic inserts. The fence was installed by a local fence company. Residents Anna and Dave Glasmire made a donation to help reach the total goal needed to finish the project. Walton said, It is quite a visual improvement over the old

Otterbein North Shore is located at 9400 North Shore Boulevard, in Danbury Township. It is a Continuum Care Retirement Community offering independent and assisted living, long-term care and short-term rehabilitation in the Jane Baker House. For more information call 419798-8254. Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/ NCAL). The competitive award program highlights select facilities across the nation that serve as models of excellence in providing high-quality long term care. To earn an award at this level requires the unwavering commitment of each individual in a facility, said Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. Edgewood Manor deserves the Silver Quality Award for its accomplishments, and I congratulate each and every person that helped in this constant journey of improving quality care. In an indication of a strengthening commitment to quality care in skilled nursing and post-acute care centers, the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program saw success rates of applicants for the Silver award increase from 17 percent to 20 percent. Edgewood Manor was one of 59 facilities nationwide to receive the Silverlevel award this year. Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is centered on the criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. The program assists providers of long term and post-acute care services in achieving their performance excellence goals. The program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Facilities begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level and must receive an award at each level before proceeding to the next. As a recipient of the Silver Achievement in Quality award, Edgewood Manor has demonstrated systematic advancements in quality, plans for continual improvement, and sustainable organizational goals. Edgewood Manor may now move forward in developing approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the criteria required for the Gold Excellence in

Quality award, which requires them to address the Baldrige Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence in its entirety. I have been to many facilities throughout the years, and I know that it takes a lot of time and energy to apply and adhere to the rigorous standards of this quality award program, says Ed McMahon, Chair, AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers. Edgewood Manor should be commended for its performance and dedication to providing high-quality care. Edgewood Manor provides extensive health care services. The center focuses on short term reanimation services helping individuals transfer from hospital to home, long term care and outpatient therapy. Three tips to get the most from your Medicare plan in 2014
BY STEVE GULAS, BOLTE INSURANCE Evaluate your Part D prescription drug plan. This is much easier than most people think. It is important to make certain your existing medications will still be covered on your present plan for 2014. Also check to see if there are other plans that may offer a lower premium and out-ofpocket drug cost savings. You can do this by going to www.bolteinsurance. com and click compare Medicare health and drug plans. This tool will allow you to make an easy side by side comparison of your present plan. Presently there are about 30 Part D prescription drug plans to choose from. Re-shop your Medicare Supplement Plan. Although coverage is the same for similar plan letters from company to company, pricing can be significantly different from one company to the next. Many people have Plan F or C which are the two most benefit-rich plans. For many people these plans may be overkill. You may be wasting a lot of money in premiums and could save money by considering if Plan G, N or even high-deductible Plan F might be a better value. Consider if a Medicare Advantage Plan is right for you. Many counties have plans available that have little or $0 monthly premium. These plans are typically PPO or HMO style plans. These style plans are not for everybody. However, they can be a great value and provide both medical and prescription drug coverage and offer considerable premium savings compared to Medicare Supplemental Plans. In 2013 there were eight plans available in Ottawa County through three different companies. Some of these plans even include extra dental and vision benefits and health fitness center membership through the Silver Sneakers program. You can view plan benefits at www.bolteinsurance.com and click on Compare Medicare Health and Drug plans. If you need help in finding a better plan, local independent agents are available that can help you with this process. Contact Steve Gulas or Chuck Devore at Bolte Insurance Agency at 419.732.3111. They represent multiple Medicare plans and will put your interests first.

Self-Assessment tools to avoid caregiver distress

Nearly one-third of adults living in Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties are family caregivers who could be at risk for heart disease, diabetes, depression and other physical and emotional maladies as a result of caregiver distress. In response to this growing issue, Home Instead Senior Care has launched Family Caregiver Stress ReliefSM at www.FamilyCaregiverStressRelief.comwith new tools to help family caregivers determine if they are at risk for distress and to minimize problems before they escalate. The Are You a Caregiver Quiz is designed to help a family caregiver self-identify and recognize the role of a caregiver, and the Family Caregiver Distress Assessment allows caregivers to determine their risk for distress and resulting emotional and physical issues. These new resources enable spouses and adult children to understand their role, the stresses they may face as a caregiver, and how that stress might lead to more serious health effects, said Enedelia Marez, general manager of the local Home Instead Senior Care serving families in Erie, Huron and Ottawa counties. Whether its support groups, stress management techniques or respite help, caregivers need to realize the importance of managing their health, too. For information about the services of Home Instead Senior Care, visit www.homeinstead.com.

Port Clinton women make cotton cancer caps

BY JASMINE CUPP A group of Port Clinton class of 1959 alumni are using their talents to bring softness and comfort to residents in the area who are suffering from cancer. The group makes cotton cancer caps for cancer patients who have lost their hair. Jan Lockhart, Mary McAtee and Gerri Gill brought the cancer cap creation to Ohio. This is the second year that the group has mass produced the hats in Port Clinton, but their venture started in Florida in 2007 where some of the women go for the winter. Judy Carney started the organization in Florida where she made the hats for cancer patients in that area. During a monthly social meeting that women of the class of Port Clintons 1959 have, they discussed how one of their classmates had cancer and could use some of the caps that Carney made. Interested in the things Carney was doing, the women of the 1959 alumni class decided to contribute and help make some of the caps and donate them to people in our area that are in need. Now along

with Lockhart, McAtee and Gill, Myra Ohm, Barb Coonrad, Jane Ohm, Dee Masing, Cathy Darr and Pat Horn all take part in the making of the cotton cancer caps. This year between May 22 and Aug. 22 the group made 270 caps. The caps are all made out of cotton and the women of the group buy the supplies and make all the hats themselves. Each cancer patient gets two caps, free of charge. The caps are donated to Magruder Hospital, Firelands Hospital and North Coast Cancer Center for Adults. Caps are also donated to the Akron Childrens Hospital, Rainbow Babies and child hospitals in Cleveland. Cancer patients like the hats because they are all cotton, soft and not scratchy. The group is also starting to make lap quilts for patients using the scraps from the hats. The group would love to purchase more materials so that they can help more people and expand their services to other hospitals. To make contributions or donations to the efforts please call Gerri Gill at 419-654-2425.

The Ohio Department of Health Thinks Were Perfect!

On Friday, June 28th, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) rated Otterbein North Shore as deficiency free in health services after spending three days in the facility examining the care provided in the Jane Baker House over the past year. A team of surveyors observed medication pass, treatments, rehab services, kitchen operations, housekeeping, maintenance, social services, human resources, dietician services, dining services, staff development, and activities as well as interviewed staff, residents and family members. In addition, the surveyors examined medical records and other documentation required by long-term care regulations. They scrutinized the entire facility including all clinical and operational systems under a survey process called QIS (Quality Indicator Survey). These annual inspections are conducted to ensure compliance with Medicare and Medicaid requirements.

Black Swamp Conservancy and the Toledo Symphony are collaborating to bring music and nature together throughout northwest Ohio. The public is invited to the first concert of this innovative Simple Gifts: Celebrating Our Musical and Natural Roots series on Sunday, Sept. 8th at the Meadowbrook Marsh Preserve on the Marblehead Peninsula. Free and open to the public, the outdoor concert will begin at 2 p.m., with guided nature walks of the preserve beginning at 12:30 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets, as no formal seating will be provided for this casual event. Sure to provide a picturesque backdrop, the 190-acre preserve includes trails, picnic areas and an observation platform for wildlife viewing. The property contains a diverse mixture of habitats, and harbors a number of rare and threatened species. In 2013, Black Swamp Conservancy partnered with Danbury Township to expand this site by 80 acres, including the remainder of the marsh for which the preserve is named. Simply Gifts is a collaborative project between the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Black Swamp Con-

servancy, a land trust dedicated to protecting agricultural and natural areas in northwest Ohio. The two organizations are partnering during a celebratory time to create awareness of the many musical and natural gifts in the region; the Conservancy is celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Symphony is celebrating its 70th. The concert series is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Edward H. Schmidt Musical Arts Fund of the Toledo Symphony. The Sept. 8th concert is free and open to the public; however, tickets must be reserved by contacting the Symphony box office at 419-246-8000. Danbury Township residents may obtain free tickets at the township zoning office. The zoning office phone number is (419) 734-6120. Those attending are asked to park at the Dempsey Fishing Access located one mile east of the preserve on East Bayshore Road. A free trolley service will begin at 11:30 a.m. to shuttle attendees from the parking area to the preserve and back. The concert will take place rain or shine, and space is limited. For more information, visit www.blackswamp.org.

On the Battle of Lake Erie

BY HOWARD M. MCCONNELL In the day of Captains Perry, Elliott and Barclay, sea power was expressed in ways up close and personal. The range of armament required this. Further, in order to manage his ship in battle, a Captain had to know all there was to know about handling a ship under sail, a prodigious undertaking. The only communication was by voice or messenger on board the flagship, or simple flag hoist to other ships. These old ships were tough, beyond belief, and gunfire alone sometimes failed to quell them. Often the fight was decided by a crew boarding the enemy, under intense fire and hand-to-hand personal combat, while locked alongside one another with grappling hooks. Today, after two hundred years, everything is different. The last gun duel between battleships was fought with ships at maximum range of dozens of miles, in the year 1944. Battles are now fought with enemies hundreds of miles apart. A battle group is not a line of battle, but a screening network of specialized ships

designed to defend the main combatant from assault by missile, air, surface, and submarine simultaneously. Weapons are discharged electronically. Intelligence and fire control are provided by radar and sonar. Battles are managed from a combat information center deep within the hull of the main combatant, by officers observing large electronic displays. Communication is instantaneous. Only one factor is the same. In 1813, Commodore Perry stood in the open on his quarterdeck, where he could see all. In 2013, the admiral would stand in his combat information center, where he can see all. McConnell, a WW II U.S. Navy officer, and his stepson, Don Schilling of Lakewood, have developed a website that archives and makes accessible historic documents on the Battle of Lake Erie. McConnell and Schilling, experienced Lake Erie sailors and students of history, share their knowledge and research at www.ancestrypaths.com/military-records/1813-battle-of-lake-erie. Perch, Peach, Pierogi & Polka Festival in Port Clinton August 30 - September 1
The 9th annual Perch, Peach, Pierogi and Polka Festival will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in downtown Port Clinton at 109 E. Perry Street over Labor Day Weekend. This year the event will begin on Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. The fun, food and polka music will continue on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1. The festival will be open from 5-11 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Once again the popular Lake Erie yellow perch sandwiches and dinners will be served along with pierogis and peach cobbler. Polish sausage sandwiches and pizza will also be available. Soft drinks, wine coolers and ice cold beer will be sold in the beer tent. The festival will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday, with all food and beverages available. The lead band will be the Frank Moravcik Band, a new addition to the festival. Based in Cleveland, the Frank Moravcik Band was formed in 1995. The main emphasis of their music is on the Cleveland Style of polka music, however, they are known for their ability to perform a wide variety of different styles of polka music and popular dance tunes. The Festival kicks off at noon on Saturday with the Duane Malinowski Orchestra. Duane has been in the business for over thirty years, and after spending the last fifteen years playing locally in the Michigan/Ohio area, he has taken to the road once again. On Saturday at 4 p.m., the Black Tie Dance Studio will provide free polka lessons for those wishing to improve their polka skills. Highlighting the weekend music will be the Del Sinchak Band from Youngstown. Del will play from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, and again on Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. The Del Sinchak Band has seven successful releases on the award winning Peppermint label. The National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame nominated four of these albums for the Album of the Year. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences nominated Let the Sunshine In the album for a Grammy Award for the Best Polka Album in 1999. The last band to perform will be the Eddie Rodick Orchestra. This band played at last years festival and was a real crowd pleaser. Eddie has been wowing audiences with his unique and exciting accordion playing for over 40 years. The entire band is made up of outstanding musicians and vocalists. The Eddie Rodick Orchestra will perform from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept.1st. The festivities will conclude with the Big Multi-prize Cash drawing at 10 p.m. on Sunday. This year, parking will be available in Port Clinton with a shuttle service to and from the festival. Parking will be available at the Sutton Center/City Hall Parking lot, 1868 E. Perry Street. Parking is $5 per car and the shuttle is free. Follow the signs to Tall Ships Shuttle Parking. Admission to the festival for adults is $3 and anyone under 18 is free. Captain Juls Fishing Report

How to Net a Fish

Until yesterday, I had never given it a second thought that someone might not know how to net a fish. I sometimes forget that what comes as second nature to me is a very new experience to someone else and can be quite challenging. I thought I would share this experience with all of you in the hope it is helpful. My charter started out with a father and his two boys, 11 and 19. We were trolling for walleye out on the Canadian line. After a couple hours of instruction on how to bait the crawler harnesses, use the line counter reels correctly, attach the inline planer boards, set them out, and retrieve them, I went to the bow of the boat saying, Weve caught your fish for your fish fry tonight, and you seem to know what youre doing now, so now its up to you guys to do all the work and just have fun! Well, the one thing I never explained was how to use the big walleye nets I have in my boat, because I had been netting all the fish that morning. Is this the only way to do it? Maybe not, but after years of netting fish successfully, (mostly), it might work for you too. You see, the nets I use have a very large basket on them, and if the bottom of the basket isnt held with one hand while also holding the handle before it enters the water, it will drift back in the water making it impossible to capture the fish. The netting will float back with the current and get in front of the basket opening, blocking the fish from entering it. Or, it will catch an exposed hook on the wrong side of the net and the fish will be able to shake free. When the older brother grabbed the net to help his Dad land a fish, I instructed him to hold the bottom of the net like I explained above. With an obstructed view I watched him unsuccessfully go after the biggest walleye of the morning. When I could finally see what was going on I realized he was never letting go of the net when it entered the water. The walleye just bounced off the taught netting time and time again. The fish won that fight and swam off. As I explained how the net works, his little brother was giving him the what for and we all laughed. So, the next time you hand someone a net, dont take for granted that they know how to use it. Captain Juls can be contacted by email at rngrgal@gmail. com, or by phone at 419-835-7347. Ragbag Report

Scooping up first place

It was certainly a big thrill for me personally and for our crew aboard our 30 sloop named SCOOP last Saturday. In case you didnt know already, it has been my privilege to serve as Commodore in 2013 for Port Clinton Yacht Club. Nine PCYC boats sailed last Saturday for the Commodores Cup, 4 boats in PHRF (full spinnaker rig) and 5 in JAM (jib and mainsail only). I am proud to report that SCOOP finished 1st on the 11 mile course from Port Clinton to Catawba Can, to the G Can Firing Range buoy then back to Port Clinton. We had some battles with light air heading into Catawba Can which essentially allowed us to stay within range of JEB sailed by Park McRitchie. The wind picked up nicely out of the east around 12:30 in the afternoon, which allowed us to get around the Can and head to the firing range. My crew of Jeff Bugbee, Tony Douglas, John McIntosh and Tim Willford did an outstanding job of handling the sails, including the spinnaker set, gibe and take-down. PHRF is a speed on distance handicap system rated by seconds per mile. After all the handicaps were figured in, SCOOP finished first in the PHRF class, followed by PCYC Fleet Captain Ramon Eickert aboard COQUI, followed by JEB and THIN ICE sailed by Mark Sprenger. Cliff Ruckstuhl sailed his J-29 RED DOG to victory in the JAM fleet followed by Jim Miller on SEA TURTLE and Mike Robinette aboard HUGGY BARE. This weekend is the Annual Green Island Race at Port Clinton Yacht Club. We have invited sailors from all over Lake Erie to come and sail with us and enjoy spending the weekend with the two Tall Ships that will be docked across the Portage River from PCYC. There are two feeder races that will be coming in on Saturday, the Dedication Day Race from North Cape Yacht Club near Monroe, MI, the Funday Race from Sandusky Sailing Club. The Green Island Race is one of the most popular sailing event along the shores of Lake Erie. The race is held on Sunday morning, Sept. 1, which gives the visiting yachtsmen the opportunity to race in on Saturday, enjoy the hospitality of PCYC on Saturday evening, Race the Green Island Race on Sunday on the 20 mile course that goes around one of the firing range markets west of Green Island, then around Green Island before returning to the finish line. Finally, the boats from North Cape will be able to at least sail past the re-enactment of the Battle of Lake Erie which will take place midday on Monday. Because of the celebration of the Bi-Centennial of the Battle, PCYC has opened up the registration for boats in the area that may not have formal PHRF ratings. They will be allowed to sail in the Casual Cruising Class in the Green Island Race. Online registration can be found at www.portclintonyachtclub.com. See you out there this weekend.

Lake Erie Solo Challenge

BY MARK SMITH I am absolutely amazed and touched by the interest and support I got during the Lake Erie Solo Challenge. This was the most difficult thing Ive ever done. I was expecting it to be difficult; it is supposed to be difficult, and not everyone is expected to complete it. One sailor was making his third attempt. The physical, mental, and psychological challenges pushed every limit I had. However, the rewards were commensurate. Im not exaggerating to say that it was a profound experience and I learned a tremendous amount, about single-handing, sailing in general and about myself. Several people have asked me about the loop on my last night (Monday night). The simple answer is that I simply couldnt fight sleep deprivation any further. My 36 year-old alternator was not charging batteries sufficiently to allow me to use my autopilot. As a result, I had to hand steer the last three days of the race and couldnt take naps. For the sake of the non-sailors, Ill explain this a little further. My sailor friends can skip the explanation. Steering a sailboat is not like steering a car. There are constantly shifting forces, wind direction and force, waves that require constant adjustment of the wheel. Its more than just moving your arm and turning the wheel. It requires constant data input from several sources to know whats going on: a wind direction arrow at the top of the mast, the forward edge of the sails, the boat speed, the compass. To maintain maximum speed requires that the helmsman is getting this input continuously. Your eyes, and even your ears and your balance sense and inborn accelerometer are constantly gathering this information and making adjustments. It would be unusual for me to go longer than 10 seconds without analyzing this stuff during a race, and its usually a continual process. The autopilot gives you a break. It gives you the opportunity to make sail changes and adjustments and take care of the dozens of other chores you have to do while sailing. Most importantly in a sail of this duration, it gives you a chance to rest. Frequent 15 minute naps can keep you going for a long time. However, the autopilot is a huge battery drain. After mid-morning Sunday I didnt have enough juice in the batteries to use the autopilot except for brief periods when I had to go somewhere else on the boat to do something. As a result, I was tethered to that steering wheel for the next three days, and my eyes, ears, and other senses were constantly taxed. I had a spare voltage regulator on board and changed it out, but it didnt help and actually overheated my chart plotter (a device that displays an electronic map and shows you where you are) with the higher voltage output. That required another fix. By Monday night I simply couldnt fight sleep deprivation any more. I found myself unable to stay awake no matter what I did. That loop and the periods before and after were the result. Around 2 a.m., 39 miles from the finish line, I made a last ditch regrouping, got the boat going where I wanted, and called in my position. Thats the last thing I remember until waking up at 6:15, drifting. The boat had heaved to on its own, and was drifting at about 1 knot. I dont remember falling asleep. It was like waking up in college realizing that youve overslept for a final exam. I was sure people had noticed what had happened and had summoned the Coast Guard and Search and Rescue which would be sending a cutter or helicopter at any time. I made a couple of hurried phone calls to the race chairman and Linda to assure them that I was still alive, then headed for the finish line. That last 30 some miles was a hard sail. I had dropped from 2nd to 5th place. It wasnt long, though, before I remembered that my goal in this thing wasnt a win, t was to finish, and I was going to do that. It really didnt take very long before I was feeling good about things again, and glad to be heading home to a wife who I appreciated more than ever, and friends whose support was incredible, well rested, I might add. After the race, when I explained my situation to the veterans, they all just chuckled and related the times on previous Challenges that they had done the same thing. They also reminded me that they dont call this a race, but a challenge. Mark Smith of Port Clinton sailed the 312 statute miles of the Lake Erie Solo Challenge on Aug. 17-20. The Challenge began at Monroe, MI, made the turn near Buffalo, NY, and finished near Erie, PA.

Other members of the band, Corey Salts of Vickery and Toby Fallsgraff of Chicago, although not natives of Port Clinton, feel that Port Clinton is the home of DGKR. Fallsgraff started the band at Ohio University, performing as a solo act. Through working at the college radio station he met Zajac and they started making music together. They released their first album, Letter Carrier (if these buttons control you) in 2004 after graduating from OU. Over the course of two more studio recordings, the band grew into a four piece band, adding Kilmer and Salts. The latest release from the band, To Ohio, At Last, was friend-funded and hand made by the band and their friends. Through the online fundraising site Kickstarter more than 200 of the bands supporters from all parts of the country chipped in to help fund their project. The campaign raised nearly twice their stated goal. When you have that kind of outpouring of support from your friends, its the best motivation, said Fallsgraff. It reminds you why youre doing this. With the money in place for the album, the band could execute their vision for To Ohio, At Last. The vinyl art was done by Port Clinton native Clare Pluckhorn and will be released this fall. The CD art was all screen-printed, cut, and hand-made by the band and their friends, a source of great pride for the band. This band doesnt exist without Port Clinton. Its our meeting place, the place weve recorded each of our albums, and really its a central part of our bands identity, said Fallsgraff. I think no matter where we all go as individuals, the music is being made right here next to Lake Erie. Daddys Gonna Kill Ralphie releases are available on Amazon.com and through the iTunes music store.

Redskins begin new era under Carmon

SPORTS Port Clinton Football Preview

Thursday, August 29, 2013 1C

BY YANEEK SMITH Head Coach: Beau Carmon, 1st season Last Year: 1-9 (0-7 SBC) Outlook: Beau Carmon is hoping to change the culture at Port Clinton. Though the Redskins were able to do some good things under former head coach Toby Hammond, they were never able to get over the hump and establish themselves as consistent winners in the Sandusky Bay Conference. In fact, Port Clinton hasnt had a winning season since 1993. Carmon spoke about trying to turn things around within the program, which, he said, starts with investing time in the weight room during the offseason. I really think a culture change (is needed), Carmon, said. Until our kids prove otherwise, Im going to continue to call

out how tough we are. Im not sold that weve made a commitment to the weight room. Its got to be better. I know, firsthand, you can get by with good athletes, but it can only get you so far. We really need to put an emphasis on conditioning and our offseason effort when we arent playing a sport. And even when we are playing a sport (during the offseason), its important to get into the weight room. The Skins will run a spread offense that features a variety of looks with anywhere from 2-4 wide receivers seeing the field at once. But Carmon insists that running the football is what he considers paramount, regardless of the formation. Well try to be 60/40 run-first offense, he said. I certainly want to try to establish the run. Sophomore Brandon Moore will start

at quarterback with the Lowe Brothers, Keegan and Emerson, serving as the primary running backs. By the end of last season, Keegan was the starting tailback and, according to Carmon, Emerson, a freshman, has a bright future ahead of him. Aidan Rospert and Jack Warner will start at wide receiver with Cole Araguz and Nathan Stubblefield manning the slot positions. Warner, a junior, will also see some time at tight end. The offensive line, which starts three sophomores, includes, from left to right, Trenton Williams, Andrew Cline, Cameron Rodriguez, Eric Wheeler and Stone Scott. The defense, which operates out of a 4-25 format, features Scott, Cline, Will Rollins and Keegan Lowe on the line. The linebacking core includes Araguz, Preston Keck and Tristan Mallory with Cal

Laurel serving as a hybrid between safety and linebacker. In the secondary, Stubblefield and Cory Beal will start at cornerback with Jesse Escobedo serving as the free safety. On defense my coordinator, J.T. Bates, is COACH CARMON much more aggressive than I used to be. J.T is pretty creative with his stunts and his blitzes. I think we will be a risky defense; we will take chances, I think we have to. Were not as big and strong as a lot of teams. Carmon, who also served as the head

coach at Fostoria High School for three years, spoke about what lies ahead for his club. Weve had good practices, and weve had some tough practices, said Carmon, who served as the defensive coordinator at

Tiffin Calvert last season. Were a young team, and our play in the scrimmages has shown that. We expect some consistency and some maturity out of these guys on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. I think weve gotten better and weve no doubt improved. We just need to develop some consistency.

BY YANEEK SMITH Head Coach: Mike May, 6th year, 26-24 Last Year: 7-3 (5-2 SBC) Outlook: Despite having lost a number of key players from last season, including all-time leading rusher Mark Konieczny, the Oak Harbor Rockets expect to pick up right where they left off in 2012. The team has just eight returning starters, four on both offense and defense, but those players are quite skilled. Ben Genzman, who moves over from fullback to tailback, will see the bulk of the carries

this season as he looks to replace the production lost from the graduation of Konieczny. Genzman, who also plays linebacker, will team with fullback Cobi Brough in the backfield, though Broughs most known for playing linebacker, where he earned All-Ohio honors last season for his performance. The other two returning starters, WR/LB Cliff Biggert and WR/DB Cole Weirich, bring with them experience

Lakers look to take the next step

BY YANEEK SMITH Head Coach: Bryan Dudash, 2nd year Last Year: 2-8 (1-6 TAAC) Outlook: Now in his second year as head coach of the Danbury Lakers, head coach Bryan Dudash has built the football program into a competitive group that can battle with many of the area's smaller schools. But now he's looking to lead Danbury to a more respectable level, one that sees them winning at least five games per year and competing against the best teams in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. And Dudash, with the help of defensive coordinator Tim Heffernan, believes this could be the year in which the Lakers take that next step. As usual, Danbury will operate its offense out of a spread formation that typically features three- and four-wide receiver sets. However, Dudash notes, there will be some run-based formations, specifically out of the Wing-T, that features running backs Cody German (6-1, 190) and Taylon Molnar (6-1, 215). Dudash is confident that the twin backs can help the offense to establish a stout rushing attack. He expects German to get 20-25 touches per game and Molnar to get 10-12 touches in each contest. We have added a little bit of a Wing-T look, but it will still be out of the shotgun. We've added a little bit more because of our two running backs. We have to be creative. Dudash is also excited about freshman QB Seth Vargo (6-2, 190). He loves football and loves to learn, Dudash said. He will get better each week, he's got a good arm and we're going to try and control his throws. He can be one of the best quarterbacks we've had at Danbury. The primary receivers will be Jimmy Chamberlain, John Brooks and James Dorko, who will also handle the kicking and punting duties. Chamberlain can put up some numbers, he can be a threat, Dudash said. He could set up numbers that rival (former receiver) Cody Schenk. Dudash also notes that Brooks, who previously played tackle, could see some time at tight end and that Dorko will run the ball at times, too. The offensive line, which has its share of returning starters, DUDASH features Kain Lucas (6-2, 260), John McClellan (6-0, 205), Mike Stys (5-11, 195), Cooper Eller (5-11, 225) and Shay Rickard (6-1, 205). The so-called experts are simply misinformed!

Newspapers are dead?
Over the last 15 years, since the proliferations of the internet, paid circulation newspapers have seen their subscriptions drop dramatically, up to 8% per year. That is why you hear Newspapers are dead. Thats the bad news. The good news is FREE community papers, like The Beacon, have had ZERO reduction in circulation and readership! Our latest audit shows that nearly 80% of the households who get The Beacon READ The Beacon. PLUS The Beacon is read by over 2 individuals per household. So, while the daily papers have suffered, the FREE communities weeklies like The Beacon have thrived. And better yet The Beacons Web Site just gets better and better, updated every day with new community news items. The Beacon was Hyper-Local before the term was coined! So, when you hear Newspapers are dead ... dont believe it! Community papers are alive and well, thank you! And our Web Sites are great as well because we dont have to worry about losing readership to our own Web Site. All you have to do is sit back and read your weekly Beacon and stay informed about the good news happening every day.

and big-play capabilities. We lost a good senior class, head coach Mike May said. We lost our all-time leading rusher, our top receiver and four of our five offensive linemen, but I feel like the guys stepping in are doing a nice job. I like the offensive line; theyve put the work in

SPORTS
and theyre ready to go. Ben Genzman moves over and will play tailback for us and Cobi Brough will be our starting fullback. We also have Cliff Biggert and Cole Weirich back at receiver. Despite replacing four starters on the offensive line, May is quite confident in his bunch. The only returning starter, left tackle Aaron Hopkins (63, 240), will be accompanied by fellow tackle T.J. Lawrence (6-2, 265), guards Alex Heintz (6-2, 190) and Vince Szabo (275) and either Matt Laughlin (5-9, 195) or Josh Beckhusen (5-9, 185). Senior Josh Sarahman will play tight end. Offensively, the Rockets will look to establish the run and hit some big plays over the top with the pass when the opportunity presents itself. Oak Harbor has long been known for its rushing attack, and this year will be no different. The X-factor in all of this may be quarterback Andre Ramsey. Ramsey, a junior, is athletic and could provide some problems with his running abilities. (Andre) is coming along well, May said. Hes probably the most coachable kid on the team. He went to some camps over the summer and hes been throwing on his own. Hes put a lot of work in.

The Beacon
In each of the last three seasons, the Rockets have gone a combined 20-10 and finished 5-2 in the SBC each time, just missing out on a league title and a spot in the playoffs in 2010 and 12. If Oak Harbor is able to get over the hump this season, it will have to be because of the defense. In the teams three losses last year, the Rockets gave up an average of 50 points. In their seven wins, they yielded just 15.3. Oak Harbor, which runs a 4-4, focuses, above all, on limiting big plays from their opponents. The defensive line has size in the middle with Lawrence, Szabo and Hopkins at the tackles and Dillon Glass, Brandon Hymore and Josh Beckhusen at the ends. And the linebacking core of Biggert, Brough, Genzman and junior Jonathan Frederick has some big-play potential as well. Finally, the secondary has Sarahman patrolling things as the safety with Weirich at one of the corners and Adam Swope and Kalob Vargas battling for the other cornerback spot. Were pretty much a bend but dont break defense, May said. The strength of our defense this year could be our linebackers, which hasnt been the case in the past. There is a lot of potential there.

Danbury Lakers football coaches, left to right: Assistant Gene Peluso, head coach Bryan Dudash, assistant Tim Heffernan and assistant Jeff Lewis. has said that Tyler Dray is still battling for a starting spot on the line and that he will likely serve as the utility guy with Geraldo Salinas also seeing some time. We have a lot of guys coming back (on the line), Dudash said. That's our strength we've got some size there and some depth. We've got talent. The base defense, meanwhile, is a typical 4-3. Brooks, Eller, McClelland and Rickard will start on the defensive line with Salinas and Dray rotating in and out. Molnar, German and Stys are the linebackers and Dorko, a cornerback, will join fellow cornerback Jared Koenig and Chambers and Sam Tyson at the safety positions. We have some athletes and we'll be moving some people around. We'll run some cover-3, some cover-1 and try to take advantage of some of our speed. The Lakers open with a non-conference slate that includes Open Door Christian Academy, located just outside of Cleveland, Holgate and St. Mary CC. Last season, Danbury went 1-2 against those teams, but Dudash is hopeful that his squad can turn that around and possibly go 3-0. In the TAAC, Dudash sees perennial league power Northwood as the favorite with Gibsonburg as the second-best team and Edon in the top-three. The question for the Lakers is whether or not they can take the next step and join the likes of Toledo Christian and Ottawa Hills in the middle of the league.
