Note: Since originally publishing this study, I have discovered that the information on
Israelite tribal heritage and heraldry I’d grown accustomed to trusting originates
from known British Israel sources, and that’s a movement with which I do not wish to
associate. While I share some beliefs similar to those of the British Israelites as to the
identity of Israelite tribes, I do not share others. It is my inclination to look within the
Bible itself for clues to tribal identities, and not necessarily to books that seek to
self-glorify a people—a people who in some instances from the time of the very
patriarchs themselves could not keep themselves obedient to our Father. A blood
identity says nothing of a person’s character. As I can, at this point, neither confirm
nor dismiss the historical or heraldry information, it is now offered for what it’s
worth.

As it would be difficult to portray a harbor or ship traffic on a banner, the alternate was to
represent Zebulun as a ship. The ancient land allotted to Zebulun had no harbor and
seemingly did not touch the sea at any point. It would seem, therefore, that his blessing
was prophetic of some future time—after Zebulun had left Palestine.

From E. Raymond Capt’s Missing Links Discovered in the Assyrian Tablets: Zebulun’s
emblem, a SHIP, is very common in some parts of Celto-Saxondom. It is the ancient
emblem of Holland. In various forms, it appears in the emblems of at least eighteen places
in England and Wales: Cambridge, Chatham, Devon, Hastings, Ipswich, Jarrow, Lincoln-
Lindsey, Manchester, Margate, Middlesborough, Morecambe, Ramsgate, Sandwich,
Scarborough, Southport, Torquay, Truro, Wallasey.

The emblem of a SHIP appears in nineteen places in Scotland and in the Arms of more than
twenty of Scotland’s ancient families and Clan Chiefs: Argyle, Burntisland, Bute, Cithness,
Campbell-town, Greenock, Inverness, Kirkwall, Largs, North Berwick, Oban, Orkney,
Queen’s Ferry, Renfrew, Rothesay, Ruthefglen, Stranraer, Wick, Zetland; Campbell, Clan
Chattan, Clanranald, Gunn of Kilernan, Hamilton, MacLauchlan, MacGillivray, MacLain,
MacKinnon, MacLaren, MacLean, MacNeil, MacPherson, Mentieth, and Shaw of
Rothiemurchus.

In Denmark, a SHIP is the central figure in the arms of the Districts of Svendborg and
Holvack. It also appears in the Municipal Arms of ten other places in Denmark. In the
Netherlands, there are at least eleven places in whose Arms this emblem appears. In
Ireland, there are ships in the emblems of at least ten of their most important places.

Zebulun’s Zodiac Sign
Virgo (The Virgin)
First Sign in the First Book, The Redeemer. The Promised Seed of the Woman.

Virgo
(The Virgin)

Seen in Virgo is the commencement of all

prophecy in Genesis 3:15: 15 “I will put
enmity between thee and the woman, and
between thy seed and her seed: it shall
bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His
heel.” This is the prophetic announcement
which the revelation in the heavens and in
the Book is designed to unfold and develop.

Virgo is represented as a woman with a

branch in her right hand, and some ears of
corn in her left hand. Thus giving a two-fold
testimony of the Coming One.

Hebrew Name

The name of this sign in Hebrew is

Bethulah, which means a virgin, and in the
Arabic a branch. The two words are
connected, as in Latin—Virgo, which means
a virgin; and virga, which means a branch.
Another name is Sunbul, Arabic, an ear of
corn.

Place in the Heavenly Story

In Genesis 3:15, the woman is presented only as a woman; but in later prophecies her
nationality is defined as being of the stock of Israel, the seed of Abraham, the line of David.
There are two prominent prophecies of her and her seed: one is connected with the first
coming in incarnation, the other is connected with His second coming in glory and
judgment.

Isaiah 7:14: 14 Therefore the LORD Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall

4
conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 9:6–7: 6 For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall
be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace
there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to
establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the
LORD of hosts will perform this.’

It is difficult to separate the Virgin and her Seed in the prophecy; and so, here, we have
first the sign Virgo, where the name points to her as the prominent subject; while in the
first of the three constellations of this sign, where the woman appears again, the name
COMA points to the child as the great subject.

Virgo—110 Stars
(one of the first magnitude, six of the third magnitude, ten of the fourth magnitude)
á The brightest star, located in the ear of corn she holds in her left hand, Hebrew Tsemech,
Arabic Al Zimach, the branch, Latin Spica, an ear of corn. There are twenty Hebrew words
translated “branch,” but only Tsemech is used exclusively of the Messiah.

Jeremiah 33:5–6: 5 They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead
bodies of men, whom I have slain in Mine anger and in My fury, and for all whose wickedness I
have hid My face from this city. 6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them,
and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.

Zechariah 3:8: 8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before
thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth My Servant the BRANCH.

Zechariah 6:12–13: 12 And speak unto him, saying, “Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying,
Behold the Man Whose name is The BRANCH; and He shall grow up out of his place, and He
shall build the temple of the LORD: 13 Even He shall build the temple of the LORD; and He shall
bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne:
and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.’

Isaiah 4:2: 2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of
the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

â Zavijaveh, the gloriously beautiful, as in Isaiah 4:2: 2 In that day shall the Branch of the LORD
be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them
that are escaped of Israel.

å Al Mureddin, who shall come down (as in Psalm 72:8: 8 He shall have dominion also from sea
to sea, And from the river unto the ends of the earth.), or who shall have dominion. This star
is also known as Chaldee Vindemiatrix, the son, or branch, who cometh.

Subilah, who carries (Isaiah 46:4: 4 And even to your old age I am He; and even to hoar hairs
will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.)

5
Virgo—110 Stars
(one of the first magnitude, six of the third magnitude, ten of the fourth magnitude)
Al Azal, the Branch (Isaiah 18:5: 5 For afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the
sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and
take away and cut down the branches.)

Subilon, a spike of corn (Isaiah 17:5: 5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the
corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley
of Rephaim.)

6
Coma (The Woman and Child)
(The Desired of All Nations)

The first constellation in Virgo

explains that this coming Branch
will be a child, and that He should
be the “Desire of all nations.” The
ancient name for the constellation
is Comah, the desired, or the
longed for. The Holy Spirit uses the
word in this very connection in
Haggai 2:7: “The desire of all
nations shall come.” It was in all
probability the constellation of
Coma in which the Star of
Bethlehem appeared. There was a
traditional prophecy, well known in
the East, carefully preserved and
handed down, that a new star would appear in this sign when He whom it foretold should.
This was, doubtless, referred to in the prophecy of Balaam, which would thus receive a
double fulfillment, first of the literal “Star,” and also of the person to whom it referred.
Numbers 24:17: 17 I shall see Him, but not now: I shall behold Him, but not nigh: There
shall come a Star out of Jacob, And a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the
corners of Moab, And destroy all the children of Sheth.

This new star would show latitude, passing at that time immediately overhead at midnight,
every twenty-four hours; while the prophecy would give the longitude as the land of Jacob.
Having these two factors, it would be only a matter of observation, and easy for the Magi to
find the place where it would be vertical, and thus to locate the very spot of the birth of
Him of Whom it was the sign, for they emphatically called it “His Star.” There is a beautiful
tradition which relates how, in their difficulty, on their way from Jerusalem to find the
actual spot under the Zenith of this star, these Magi sat down beside David’s “Well of
Bethlehem” to refresh themselves. There they saw the star reflected in the clear water of
the well. Hence it is written that “when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding
joy,” for they knew they were at the very spot and place of His appearing whence He was
to “come forth.”

There can be little doubt that it was a new start. In the first place a new star is no unusual
phenomenon. In the second place the tradition is well supported by ancient Christian
writers. One speaks of its “surpassing brightness.” Another (Ignatius, Bp. of Antioch, A .D .
69) says, “At the appearance of the Lord a star shone forth brighter than all the other
stars.” Ignatius, doubtless, had this from those who had actually seen it. Prudentius (4th

7
cent. A .D .) says that not even the morning star was so fair. Archbishop Trench, who quotes
these authorities, says “This star, I conceive, as so many ancients and moderns have done,
to have been a new star in the heavens.”

One step more places this new star in the constellation of Coma, and with new force makes
it indeed “His star”—the “Sign” of His “coming forth from Bethlehem.”

Coma—43 Stars
(ten of the fourth magnitude)

8
Centaurus (The Centaur)
The Despised Sin-Offering

The Hebrew name for Centaurus is

Bezeh (Arabic Al Beze), the
despised. It is the very word used
of this Divine sufferer in Isaiah
53:3: “He is despised and rejected
of men.” Another Hebrew name for
the constellation was Asemath, a
sin-offering, as in Isaiah 53:10: 10
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise
Him; He hath put Him to grief:
when thou shalt make His soul an
offering for sin, He shall see His
seed, He shall prolong His days, and
the pleasure of the LORD shall
prosper in His hand.

Together with the four bright stars in the cross, the stars of Centaurus make a brilliant show
in the southern latitudes. Centaurus is one of the constellations furthest south from the
northern center. It is situated immediately over the cross, which bespeaks His own death;
He is seen in the act of destroying the enemy.

Thus these star pictures tell us that it would be as a child that the Promised Seed should
come forth and grow and wax strong in spirit and be filled with wisdom (Luke 2:40: 40 And
the Child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was
upon Him.); and that as a man having two natures He should suffer and die.

Centaurus—35 Stars
(two of the first magnitude, one of the second magnitude, six of the
third magnitude, nine of the fourth magnitude)
á brightest star, located in the horse’s fore-foot, Toliman, the heretofore and hereafter,
marking Him as the One “Which is, and Which was, and Which is to come—the Almighty”
(Revelation 1:8). Sir John Herschell observed this star to be growing rapidly brighter. It may
be, therefore, one of the changeable stars, and its name may be taken as an indication of the
fact that it was known to the ancients.

9
Bootes (The Coming One)
He Cometh

The third and last section in this first chapter of

the first book goes on to tell of His second
coming in glory. Boötes is pictured as a man
walking rapidly, with a spear in his right hand
and a sickle in his left hand. The Greeks called
him Bo-ö-tes, which is from the Hebrew root Bo,
to come, and means the coming. It is referred to
in Psalm 96:13: 13 Before the LORD : for He
cometh, for He cometh to judge the earth: He
shall judge the world with righteousness, and the
people with His truth.

It is probable that his ancient name was Arcturus

(as referred to in Job 9:9: 9 Which maketh
Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers
of the south.)

This brings us back to Genesis 3:15, and closes up

this first chapter of the First Book (Virgo). It
shows us the Person of the Promised Seed from
the beginning to the end, from the first promise
of the birth of the child in Bethlehem, to the
final coming of the great Judge and Harvester to
reap the harvest of the earth. Revelation 14:15–16: 15 And another angel came out of the
Temple, crying with a loud voice to Him That sat on the cloud, “Thrust in Thy sickle, and
reap: for the time is come for Thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 And He
That sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.

In Virgo we see the woman whose Seed is to bruise the serpent’s head, the Virgin-Born, the
Branch of Yahveh, perfect man and perfect God, Immanuel, “God with us,” yet despised
and rejected of men, and yielding up His life that others may have life for evermore. But
we see Him coming afterwards in triumphant power to judge the earth.

This is only the first chapter of the first book, but it contains the outline of the whole
volume, complete in itself, so far as it regards the Person of the Coming One. Like the Book
of Genesis, it is the seed-plot which contains the whole, all the rest being merely the
development of the many grand details which are included and shut up within it. It is only
one chapter out of twelve, but it distinctly foreshadows the end—even “the sufferings of
Christ and the glory which should follow.”

10
Boötes—54 Stars
(one of the first magnitude, six of the third magnitude, eleven of the fourth
magnitude)
á the brightest star, located in the left knee, Arcturus

ì located in the spear-head, Al Katurops, the branch, treading under foot

å located just below the waist on his right side, Mirac, the coming forth, or Mizar or Izar, the
preserver, guarding

ç Muphride, who separates

â located in the head, Nekkar, the pierced (Zechariah 12:10: 10 And I will pour upon the house of
David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they
shall look upon Me Whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourneth for
his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.),
telling us that this coming Judge is the One who was pierced. Another Hebrew name is Merga,
who bruises

Zebulun Encamped, Numbered, and At War
Eliab the Head of the House of His Fathers

Numbers 1:1–4; 9:1 And the LORD spake unto

Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the
tabernacle of the congregation, on the first
day of the second month, in the second year
after they were come out of the land of
Egypt, saying, 2 “Take ye the sum of all
the congregation of the children of Israel,
after their families, by the house of their
fathers, with the number of their names,
every male by their polls; 3 From twenty
years old and upward, all that are able to
go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron
shall number them by their armies. 4 And
with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every
one head of the house of his fathers. 9 Of Zebulun; Eliab the
son of Helon.

the children of Zebulun.” 8 And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty
and seven thousand and four hundred. 9 All that were numbered in the camp of Judah*
were an hundred thousand and fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred,
throughout their armies. “These shall first set forth.

*The camp of Judah included all the tribes encamped on the East (Issachar, Judah, and Zebulun).

Zebulun’s Order in the Wilderness Journeyings of Israel

Numbers 10:12–28: 12 And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of

12
Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran. 13 And they first took their journey
according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 14 In the first place went
the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over his
host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab. 15 And over the host of the tribe of the children
of Issachar was Nethaneel the son of Zuar. 16 And over the host of the tribe of the children
of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon. 17 And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons
of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle. 18 And the standard
of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elizur
the son of Shedeur. 19 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was
Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 20 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad
was Eliasaph the son of Deuel. 21 And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary:
and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came. 22 And the standard of the
camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host
was Elishama the son of Ammihud. 23 And over the host of the tribe of the children of
Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 24 And over the host of the tribe of the
children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni. 25 And the standard of the camp of
the children of Dan set forward, which was the rereward of all the camps throughout their
hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26 And over the host of the
tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran. 27 And over the host of the tribe
of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan. 28 Thus were the journeyings of the
children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.

Zebulunite Spy Sent to the Land of Canaan

Numbers 13:1–3;10: 1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 “Send thou men, that they
may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of
their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.” 3 And Moses by the
commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were
heads of the children of Israel. 10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

Numbering in the Plains of Moab—60,500

Numbers 26:3–4; 26–27: 3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of
Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying, 4 “Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old
and upward; as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which went forth out
of the land of Egypt.” 26 Of the sons of Zebulun after their families: of Sered, the family
of the Sardites: of Elon, the family of the Elonites: of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.
27 These are the families of the Zebulunites according to those that were numbered of
them, threescore thousand and five hundred.

13
Elizaphan Appointed Prince to Divide the Land of Inheritance

Numbers 34:16–18; 25: 16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 17 “These are the names
of the men which shall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun. 18 And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land by inheritance. 25
And the prince of the tribe of the children of Zebulun, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.

Zebulun Fails to Drive Out Canaanites

Judges 1:30: 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of
Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

Zebulun in the Battle Against Sisera

Judges 4:4–10: 4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that
time. 5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in
mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 And she sent and
called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, “Hath not the
LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, ‘Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with
thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? 7 And I
will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots
and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.’” 8 And Barak said unto her, “If
thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.” 9
And she said, “I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall
not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” And
Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali
to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with
him.

Judges 5:12–23: 12 Awake, awake, Deborah: Awake, awake, utter a song: Arise, Barak, and
lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam. 13 Then He made him that remaineth have
dominion over the nobles among the people: The LORD made me have dominion over the
mighty. 14 Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin,
among thy people; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that
handle the pen of the writer. 15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even
Issachar, and also Barak: He was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben
There were great thoughts of heart. 16 Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear
the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben There were great searchings of
heart. 17 Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued
on the sea shore, And abode in his breaches. 18 Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that
jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field. 19 The kings came and
fought, Then fought the kings of Canaan In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; They took no

14
gain of money. 20 They fought from heaven; The stars in their courses fought against
Sisera. 21 The river of Kishon swept them away, That ancient river, the river Kishon. O my
soul, thou hast trodden down strength. 22 Then were the horsehoofs broken By the means
of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones. 23 ‘Curse ye Meroz,’ said the Angel of
the LORD , ‘Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; Because they came not to the help of
the LORD , to the help of the LORD against the mighty.

*Simeon, Levi, Gad, and Judah are not mentioned in this battle.

Gideon Calls Zebulunites to Help Him

Judges 6:34–7:25: 34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet;
and Abi-ezer was gathered after him. 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh;
who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun,
and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them. 36 And Gideon said unto God, “If Thou
wilt save Israel by mine hand, as Thou hast said, 37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in
the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside,
then shall I know that Thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as Thou hast said.” 38 And it was
so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the
dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39 And Gideon said unto God, “Let not Thine
anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray Thee, but this
once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let
there be dew.” 40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there
was dew on all the ground. 1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were
with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the
Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2 And the
LORD said unto Gideon, “The people that are with thee are too many for Me to give the
Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against Me, saying, ‘Mine own hand
hath saved me.’ 3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
“Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead.’” And
there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand. 4
And the LORD said unto Gideon, “The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the
water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee,
‘This shall go with thee,’ the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee,
‘This shall not go with thee,’ the same shall not go.” 5 So he brought down the people unto
the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, “Every one that lappeth of the water with his
tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth
down upon his knees to drink.” 6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand
to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon
their knees to drink water. 7 And the LORD said unto Gideon, “By the three hundred men
that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other
people go every man unto his place.” 8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those

15
three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley. 9 And it came to
pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, “Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I
have delivered it into thine hand. 10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy
servant down to the host: 11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine
hands be strengthened to go down unto the host.” Then went he down with Phurah his
servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host. 12 And the Midianites and
the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for
multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for
multitude. 13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto
his fellow, and said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled
into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it,
that the tent lay along.” 14 And his fellow answered and said, “This is nothing else save the
sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered
Midian, and all the host.” 15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream,
and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel,
and said, “Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.” 16 And he
divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s
hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. 17 And he said unto them, “Look
on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be
that, as I do, so shall ye do. 18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me,
then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, ‘The sword of the
LORD , and of Gideon.’” 19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto
the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set
the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. 20
And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in
their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, “The
sword of the LORD , and of Gideon.” 21 And they stood every man in his place round about
the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled. 22 And the three hundred blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the
host: and the host fled to Beth-shittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abel-meholah, unto
Tabbath. 23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of
Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites. 24 And Gideon sent
messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and
take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim
gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. 25 And
they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock
Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the
heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

is before Jokneam; 12 And turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrising unto the border
of Chisloth-tabor, and then goeth out to Daberath, and goeth up to Japhia, 13 And from
thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah-hepher, to Ittah-kazin, and goeth out to

Eliab’s Offering for the Dedicating of the Altar on the Third Day

Numbers 7:1–6; 11; 24–29: 1 And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the
tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the
altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them; 2 That the
princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes,
and were over them that were numbered, offered: 3 And they brought their offering before
the LORD , six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for
each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle. 4 And the LORD spake unto
Moses, saying, 5 “Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of
the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his
service.” 6 And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites. 11
And the LORD said unto Moses, “They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for
the dedicating of the altar.” 24 On the third day Eliab the son of Helon, prince of the
children of Zebulun, did offer: 25 His offering was one silver charger, the weight whereof
was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of
the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering: 26 One
golden spoon of ten shekels, full of incense: 27 One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of
the first year, for a burnt offering: 28 One kid of the goats for a sin offering: 29 And for a
sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year:

stand upon mount Ebal to curse; Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.*
14 And the Levites shall speak, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice, 15
‘Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the

people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’ 16 ‘Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his
mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 17 Cursed be he that removeth his

that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow.’ And all the people

his father’s skirt.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 21 ‘Cursed be he that lieth with any
manner of beast.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 22 ‘Cursed be he that lieth with his

sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall
say, ‘Amen.’ 23 ‘Cursed be he that lieth with his mother in law.’ And all the people shall
say, ‘Amen.’ 24 ‘Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour secretly.’ And all the people shall
say, ‘Amen.’ 25 ‘Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person.’ And all the
people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 26 ‘Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to
do them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

And, Issachar, in thy tents. 19 They shall call the people unto the mountain; There they
shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and
of treasures hid in the sand.”

Making David King

I Chronicles 12:1–13:8: 1 Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet
kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men,
helpers of the war. 2 They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and
the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of
Benjamin. 3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; and
Jeziel, and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; and Berachah, and Jehu the Antothite, 4 And
Ismaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and Jeremiah,
and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Josabad the Gederathite, 5 Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and
Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite, 6 Elkanah, and Jesiah, and Azareel,
and Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korhites, 7 And Joelah, and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham
of Gedor. 8 And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the
wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and
buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the

20
mountains; 9 Ezer the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, 10 Mishmannah the fourth,
Jeremiah the fifth, 11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh, 12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the
ninth, 13 Jeremiah the tenth, Machbanai the eleventh. 14 These were of the sons of Gad,
captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a
thousand. 15 These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had
overflown all his banks; and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east,
and toward the west. 16 And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold
unto David. 17 And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, “If ye
be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be
come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of
our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.” 18 Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was
chief of the captains, and he said, “Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse:
peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee.” Then
David received them, and made them captains of the band. 19 And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they
helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying,
“He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.” 20 As he went to Ziklag,
there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad,
and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of Manasseh. 21 And they
helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and
were captains in the host. 22 For at that time day by day there came to David to help him,
until it was a great host, like the host of God. 23 And these are the numbers of the bands
that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of
Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD . 24 The children of Judah that bare shield
and spear were six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war. 25 Of the children
of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand and one hundred. 26 Of the
children of Levi four thousand and six hundred. 27 And Jehoiada was the leader of the
Aaronites, and with him were three thousand and seven hundred; 28 And Zadok, a young
man mighty of valour, and of his father's house twenty and two captains. 29 And of the
children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of
them had kept the ward of the house of Saul. 30 And of the children of Ephraim twenty
thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their
fathers. 31 And of the half tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by
name, to come and make David king. 32 And of the children of Issachar, which were men
that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them
were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment. 33 Of Zebulun, such
as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which
could keep rank: they were not of double heart. 34 And of Naphtali a thousand captains,
and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand. 35 And of the Danites
expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred. 36 And of Asher, such as went
forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand. 37 And on the other side of Jordan, of the
Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of

21
instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand. 38 All these men of
war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over
all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. 39 And there
they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for
them. 40 Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali,
brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes
of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for
there was joy in Israel. 1 And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds,
and with every leader. 2 And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, “If it seem good
unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every
where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites
which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us: 3 And let us
bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.” 4 And all
the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the
people. 5 So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering
of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath-jearim. 6 And David went up, and all Israel,
to Baalah, that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark
of God the LORD , that dwelleth between the cherubims, Whose name is called on it. 7 And
they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio
drave the cart. 8 And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with
singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with
trumpets.

David’s Appointments

I Chronicles 27:1–22: 1 Now the children of Israel after their number, to wit, the chief
fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in
any matter of the courses, which came in and went out month by month throughout all the
months of the year, of every course were twenty and four thousand. 2 Over the first course
for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his course were twenty and
four thousand. 3 Of the children of Perez was the chief of all the captains of the host for
the first month. 4 And over the course of the second month was Dodai an Ahohite, and of
his course was Mikloth also the ruler: in his course likewise were twenty and four thousand.
5 The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief
priest: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 6 This is that Benaiah, who was
mighty among the thirty, and above the thirty: and in his course was Ammizabad his son. 7
The fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his
son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 8 The fifth captain for the
fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 9
The sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite: and in his
course were twenty and four thousand. 10 The seventh captain for the seventh month was
Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four

22
thousand. 11 The eighth captain for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the
Zarhites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 12 The ninth captain for the
ninth month was Abiezer the Anetothite, of the Benjamites: and in his course were twenty
and four thousand. 13 The tenth captain for the tenth month was Maharai the
Netophathite, of the Zarhites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 14 The
eleventh captain for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of
Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 15 The twelfth captain for the
twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his course were twenty and
four thousand. 16 Furthermore over the tribes of Israel: the ruler of the Reubenites was
Eliezer the son of Zichri: of the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maachah: 17 Of the
Levites, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel: of the Aaronites, Zadok: 18 Of Judah, Elihu, one of
the brethren of David: of Issachar, Omri the son of Michael: 19 Of Zebulun, Ishmaiah the
son of Obadiah: of Naphtali, Jerimoth the son of Azriel: 20 Of the children of Ephraim,
Hoshea the son of Azaziah: of the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah: 21 Of the
half tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah: of Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of
Abner: 22 Of Dan, Azareel the son of Jeroham. These were the princes of the tribes of
Israel.

Groves, Altars, Images, and High Places Broken Down During Hezekiah’s Reign

II Chronicles 30:1–31:1: 1 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also
to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to
keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel. 2 For the king had taken counsel, and his
princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month. 3
For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves
sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem. 4 And the
thing pleased the king and all the congregation. 5 So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-sheba even to Dan, that they should come to
keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a
long time in such sort as it was written. 6 So the posts went with the letters from the king
and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the
king, saying, “Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and
Israel, and He will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the
kings of Assyria. 7 And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed
against the LORD God of their fathers, Who therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.
8 Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the LORD , and
enter into His sanctuary, which He hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God,
that the fierceness of His wrath may turn away from you. 9 For if ye turn again unto the
LORD , your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away His face from you, if ye return unto Him.” 10 So the posts
passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun:

23
but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them. 11 Nevertheless divers of Asher and
Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves, and came to Jerusalem. 12 Also in Judah
the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the
princes, by the word of the LORD . 13 And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to
keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation. 14 And
they arose and took away the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense
took they away, and cast them into the brook Kidron. 15 Then they killed the passover on
the fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed,
and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the LORD . 16
And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of
God: the priests sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites. 17 For
there were many in the congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had
the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to sanctify them
unto the LORD . 18 For a multitude of the people, even many of Ephraim, and Manasseh,
Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet did they eat the passover
otherwise than it was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “The good LORD
pardon every one 19 That prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers,
though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.” 20 And the LORD
hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people. 21 And the children of Israel that were
present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness:
and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with loud instruments
unto the LORD . 22 And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good
knowledge of the LORD : and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace
offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers. 23 And the whole
assembly took counsel to keep other seven days: and they kept other seven days with
gladness. 24 For Hezekiah king of Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks
and seven thousand sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks
and ten thousand sheep: and a great number of priests sanctified themselves. 25 And all
the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that
came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in
Judah, rejoiced. 26 So there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the
son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem. 27 Then the priests the
Levites arose and blessed the people: and their voice was heard, and their prayer came up
to His holy dwelling place, even unto heaven. 1 Now when all this was finished, all Israel
that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images in pieces, and cut
down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and
Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all
the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.

Zebulun in the Psalms

Psalm 68:27: 27 There is little Benjamin with their ruler, the princes of Judah and their

council, The princes of Zebulun, and the princes of Naphtali.

Zebulun in the Prophets

Isaiah 9:1: 1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the
first He lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did
more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

Note: This prophecy is quoted in Matthew 4:15. As the Assyrian brought dimness to the region, Christ
brought His light.

Mat 4:12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, He departed into Galilee;
Mat 4:13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the
borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
Mat 4:14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
Mat 4:15 “The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee
of the Gentiles;
Mat 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow
of death light is sprung up.”
