fall protection and rescue

is serious business

Imagine yourself slowly climbing to repair a tower on top of the John Hancock Building in 40 knot winds 130 stories above Chicago with the world rushing beneath you, including jet aircraft, or Balancing on an eighteen-inch walkway as you inspect the structure of the Mackinaw Island Bridge, a half mile over the Straights of Mackinaw, with unsuspecting miniature barges and tourists passing below, or Crawling through tunnels under the streets of New York City, daylight overhead, but darkness and moisture surrounding you, as you try to locate a break in miles and miles of electrical cable.

There are no margins for error.

Every day, workers throughout the world risk their lives to build the structures we live in, work in, pass over, and communicate from. They are people like you and I and they deserve the best protection available. These situations are out there, and late in the day when you are tired and your foot slips or you are in a harsh environment that is anything but clean, wearing the BEST means you'll make it home that night. The BEST means that every product produced and delivered meets or exceeds the toughest standards required by the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as well as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). It means that these products and their testing is verified by a qualified third party, such as the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI); designed and produced in accordance with ISO 9001 certification standards, and backed with product liability, support and training.

Specialized Safety Systems

designed for the way you work.
DBI/SALA knows that while on the job you need comfort, mobility and safety! Weve designed each component of our safety systems to be fully customizable, ready to fit any size or shape. And because every safety system provides flexibility and full mobility, we make it easier to keep working productively while remaining fully protected. With 25 years of fall protection expertise, we offer the broadest line of safety equipment in the industry; including harnesses, shock absorbing lanyards, self-retracting lifelines, rescue and retrieval equipment, netting and more! We engineer all safety systems to meet (and exceed) every code! The DBI/SALA team works with you to design and construct a system engineered for maximum safety and comfort every time! We also have a complete line of specialty items to address unique safety concerns and provide safety solutions for challenging environments. For example, flame-resistant Kevlar webbing harnesses and lanyards assure safety when working around flame and excessive heat. Non-sparking/non-conductive hardware offers the protection you need while working in explosive environments or when electrical conductivity is an issue. With our total safety systems approach, DBI/SALA takes fall protection to a new level. And to make sure you have total protection, each one of our five basic systems typically contains four safety components: a body support, connecting component, anchorage connector and anchorage.
Rebar Tying
Delta Harness 1101643 (p.16) Chain Rebar Assembly 5900050 (p.29)

Work Positioning
Work positioning systems will hold and sustain you at a specific work location, limiting any free fall to two feet or less. Rebar tying and concrete wall-form work are typical applications. For maximum security, each work positioning system includes a Delta No-Tangle full body harness connected by a chain or web rebar assembly, or a rope or web lanyard. A workseat can also be added for additional support. A carabiner or snap hook connector is used to fasten to the anchorage, generally rebar or a support structure.

introduction

Safety Systems Fall Arrest

Fall arrest systems are typically used to protect workers when they are six feet or more above the ground. For maximum safety, all of our fall arrest systems are designed to limit the maximum arresting forces to 900 lbs. or less--half of the OSHA standard of 1,800 pounds.Typical fall arrest applications are steel erection, suspended platform activities and elevated maintenance work. Every DBI/SALA fall arrest system includes a Delta No-Tangle full body harness for body support; a connecting component such as a shock absorbing lanyard, selfretracting lifeline, or rope grab; an anchorage connector such as a carabiner, tie-off adapter, trolley, or beam clamp; and a solid anchorage, such as an I-beam or another type of support structure.

Safety Systems Restraint

Restraint systems prevent you from reaching an area where a free fall could occur. Leading edge roof work typically calls for a restraint system. For body support you can use either a DeltaNo-Tangle full body harness or a body belt that connects to a rope or web lanyard connecting component. For secure anchorage, restraint systems use an anchorage connector such as an anchorage plate with a D-ring or a support structure that connects to the lanyard with a carabiner or snap hook.

Rescue
Rescue systems are designed to raise or lower you to safety in an emergency without any possibility of a free fall. Rescue systems are typically used in confined space work, such as underground utility projects or tank maintenance. For total body support, DBI/SALA rescue systems use a Delta No-Tangle full body harness and/or a rescue cradle connected to a winch, self-retracting lifeline, rescue positioning device or a Rollgliss system anchorage connector. That, in turn, is connected directly to an anchorage I-beam, to the ground or to an anchorage connector such as a tripod, davit arm, carabiner or tie-off adapter.

Suspension
Use a suspension system to support and hold you without any possibility of a free fall while you are being raised or lowered. Boatswain's chair jobs, such as painting or window washing, are common examples. DBI/SALA suspension systems provide total safety with the Delta No-Tangle full body harness and a workseat or boatswains chair as body support components. The connecting component is generally a rescue-positioning device (RPD), Fisk Descender or winch. The anchorage connector can be a carabiner or tie-off adapter; with anchorage from a tripod, davit arm or support structure.

Dri-lex has a unique threelayer knit construction that creates a built-in air chamber providing air circulation to ventilate and cool your body. Developed for sport, recreation and work shoe linings, its built for rugged endurance and is resistant to both odor and mildew. The moisture-wicking fabric contains a moisture and air-moving chamber between the top, hydrophobic layer and the bottom layer of hydrophilic Hydrofil nylon.Thats a technical way to say that the side against you hates the water and the other side loves it. No matter how you define it; your comfort is guaranteed day after day; year after year.

Why all the D-Ring options?

D-rings serve different functions depending on their location. All D-rings serve as anchorage points for your connecting components. Some can also be used to hold tools and accessories. Front D-rings are used to attach your harness (and you) to a ladder climbing system or for work positioning, suspension and rescue. (CSA Group L or D) Side D-rings are used for positioning or restraint, such as with a rebar lanyard assembly or wall form hook assembly. They can also be used to hold a tool or two. ( CSA Group P ) Back D-rings are used for fall protection or restraint. They will slide on impact, keeping you in an upright position and providing added safety and comfort. (CSA Group A) Shoulder D-rings are attached to a Y-type lanyard with a spreader bar for rescue and retrieval operations in confined spaces.(CSA Group E)

Rope Grabs & Lifelines

DBI/SALA has you covered with a complete line of mobile and static rope grabs for both synthetic fiber rope and steel wire cable, along with a wide variety of lifelines to meet your work needs. All of our rope grabs are made of high grade corrosion resistant materials. Our most popular LAD-SAF rope grabs automatically follow you, giving you maximum freedom and hands-free operation. They can be detached or removed anywhere along the lifeline. The rope grabs utilize a cam lever as well as a friction sensitive brake to lock the rope grab onto the lifeline in case of a fall, even if the operator holds the device open in a panic situation. They will also reduce the arresting forces on a worker if there is a fall. We manufacture a complete range of lifelines for use with our rope grabs. They are available in 5/8inch or 3/4-inch polyester or polyester/polypropylene blend rope and in cut lengths or assemblies that include a self-locking snap hook at one end. DBI/SALA offers several styles of counterweights to keep the lifeline taut and optimize performance of the rope grab.

Pe r m a n e n t H o r i zo n t a l L i f e l i n e s Unique Sayfglida Features

Sayfglida is the worlds most advanced horizontal lifeline system available, providing unrivaled levels of protection. The system utilizes a patented Sayflink sleeve that slides easily over intermediate anchorage brackets and around corner brackets hands-free, with no manipulation required by the user. Install the system above, even with, or below the user. Total length is unlimited for ultimate versatility.
Detachable Sayflink Sleeve:
The patented Sayflink Sleeve, when attached to a harness and lanyard/self-retracting lifeline, ensures a user-positive contact with the Sayfglida system because of its ability to bypass all intermediate brackets and corner units. Chamfered helical surfaces provide smooth passage along the system with no manipulation required by the user (hands-free operation!). Built-in rollers assist in the effortless movement, and it can be easily attached or removed anywhere along the system. Constructed of stainless steel and with no moving parts, the Sayflink Sleeve is ideal for harsh environments.A non-detachable model for use with in-line entry/exit units is also available.

Sayfglida
Unrivaled Horizontal Protection Reliable, Simple & Safe
Some of the most common fall hazards occur when workers operating in the horizontal plane do not have continuous access to suitable anchorage points, exposing them to unnecessary risk of injury or death should they fall when near a vertical drop. These situations are found throughout industry, and DBI/SALAs Sayfglida system provides complete protectionwithout restricting the ability of workers to perform their normal operations. DBI/SALA knows you need comfort, mobility and safety while on the job. Our fully engineered permanent horizontal lifelines offer each of those features.Whether it is our durable 12mm Sayfglida system that can span further between intermediates and accommodate more users than most systems on the market, or our lighter weight and more economical 8mm system, DBI/SALA has the horizontal protection system for you. Each combines ease of use, flexibility and low maintenance, guaranteeing optimum performance and worker satisfaction. Typical applications include...Railcars, Bridgecranes,Truck Trailers, Busses/Mass Transit, Modular Home Building, Aircraft Hangers, Bridges, Cranes, Convention Centers, Rooftops, Arena Rigging, Window Washing, Exposed Walkways

Roof Maintenance

Arena Rigging

Bridge Cranes

Corner Bracket:
Passage around curves is achieved through use of a Corner Bracket, a bent tube attached to an intermediate bracket to properly position the cable. It allows the Sayflink Sleeve to bypass corners hands-free without the user detaching from the lifeline.

Intermediate Brackets:

Truck Loading

Exclusive Computerized Fall Analysis Program

During initial development, DBI/SALA commissioned the design of a sophisticated computer program to simulate any specified fall on any given Sayfglida installation. Unlike ALL other manufacturers programs which predict system loads, DBI/SALAs software measures actual falls in real time, based on thousands of drop tests. It provides detailed information for use by a Certified Installer to custom-design each system specifically to the site. This unique computer software not only calculates the loading imposed on each system component and anchorage point, but also the arresting force and fall clearance needed by the worker. These calculations are critical and must be based on actual test data to ensure worker safety, not guesses or predictions.

Manufactured from stainless steel, the MultiDimensional Intermediate Brackets are designed for installation in a variety of orientations above, even with, or below the user. This versatility ensures the Sayflink Sleeve will always smoothly bypass the bracket, whatever the particular height of the cable installation. More importantly, should a fall occur, the brackets are designed not only to swivel on the anchoring bolt but also to deform in shape. This helps dissipate the energy generated by a fall and ensures minimal shock loads imposed on the user, limits line deflection, and allows for a reduction in anchorage point strength requirements.

Shock Absorber:
For structures limited in strength, the Sayfglida system can be configured with our in-line Zorbit energy absorber to limit forces and help control the end anchor loads.

Swageless End Termination:

For final assembly, one end of the system is preswaged in the factory; the other is fixed into position with a stainless steel swageless termination using small hand tools. The swageless end fitting eliminates the need for a cumbersome swaging machine, saving time and money. Once installed, the system is then tensioned using the in-line tensioner.

Ladder Safety Systems

With DBI/SALA Ladder Safety Systems you are always assured of complete safety and security when climbing fixed ladders on poles, towers, tanks, etc. Every system is engineered to your specific requirements while meeting or exceeding OSHA, ANSI, and CSA standards.
Were the ONLY ones to do it! For maximum structural integrity, our shock absorbing design uses an elasomeric impact attenuator to substantially reduce the forces imposed on the ladder structure.

LAD-SAF Flexible Cable System

Our popular LAD-SAF Flexible Cable Systems offer fall protection when climbing a fixed ladder. The shock absorbing top bracket and tension-indicating bottom bracket serve as anchors for a steel cable which runs the length of the climbing area. Non-metallic cable guides reduce cable wear, permitting you to ascend (or descend) unhindered. The economical, easy to use systems are available for straight or curved ladders and for connection to wood, concrete or steel structures.

Locked on for hands-free movement. The swiveling LAD-SAF safety sleeve, attached by carabiner to your Delta harness, prevents falls by locking onto the cable. It is easily attached or removed anywhere along the cable and automatically follows as you climb or descend.

A few good tools. Easily install the LAD-SAF system with standard wrenches. The unique builtin tensioner tells you precisely when the system is at the proper tension.

Systems also available for wood and concrete structures

Ready for anything; built for everything. Built-to-last from corrosion resistant materials, the system is galvanized for a maintenance free life. For harsh environments, use the complete stainless steel system.

Ladder Gate
To protect from the dangers (and liability!) of unauthorized access to fixed ladders, DBI/SALA developed the easily installed, maintenance-free Ladder Gate. Constructed of lightweight aluminum, its angled sides enclose the ladder, preventing anyone from reaching around the shield. When the padlock is opened, the door swings to the left or right of the ladder, depending on how it was mounted.
LAD-SAF System 5901980

Confined Space Rescue Modular Davit Arm/Base Assembly

Because you told us it had to be readily accessible and easy to use, we built a modular system that fits in two bags with no piece longer than 4 ft. long, easily fitting into a vehicle locker. The bags are light enough for two men to carry to the entry hole and assemble in less than 5 minutes. Safely connect up and then pivot to the entry hole. The Davit Rescue System is constructed of anodized aluminum, zinc-coated steel and stainless to maximize strength, minimize weight and resist corrosion. Computer-aided design and analysis allowed us to eliminate unnecessary bulk by taking advantage of the newest manufacturing techniques. The added style was a bonus. You also asked for an adaptable system. One of our design philosophies was universality. The mast and boom readily adapt to interchangeable bases, giving you a totally efficient, mix and match system. For example, install permanent bases on a series of tanks and move the davit arm from one to another; or use a wall mount for one application; the portable base for another.
Reflective labeling on arm and legs improves visibility in low-light conditions.

Davit Rescue System Options

Side by side pulleys with lock-down pins provide proper cable routing and smooth operation when lifting loads. Integrated anchor ring provides yet another auxiliary or back-up connection point for a self retracting lifeline or rope grab system.

Flush Mount Base for Concrete:The 8000059 flush mount davit base is used for general purpose on most applications. The flush mount davit base is positioned into the rebar structure where the concrete will be poured around the base. When the base is not in use, simply insert the plug/stopper into the opening to prevent debris from filling the cavity.

Built-in lockdown screw allows the user to fix the mast pole into place eliminating rotation when using with fixed bases. Complete user labeling includes, identification, warnings, and set-up instructions.

Two SALA Quick-Connect brackets provide primary and backup mounting points for mechanical devices. Each will accommodate a personnel winch, materials hoist or 3-way self retracting lifeline. Built-in Level Indicator

For Steel
Portable bases width can be adjusted to 48 inches, 54 inches or 60 inches to fit various hole/entrance sizes.

Permanent bases for steel and concrete:The permanent davit bases are for general purpose use for most applications. The 8004031 and 8002050 permanent bases are attached to steel and the 8004032 and 8002040 are for attaching to concrete. A minimum of six equally spaced 1/2" diameter fasteners are required to attach the davit base to the structure.

A hole 3 1/16" in diameter that is at least 6 1/4" deep is required for the base to set into. A 1/2" bolt secures the post to the horizontal Post Mount surface.

Stainless steel detent pins lock all components in place making assembly/ disassembly quick and easy tool-free.

Four independent leveling feet adjust up to 9 inches for rough uneven terrain.

The davit arm parts fit into two carrying bags designed to fit into the lockers/storage compartments of rescue and utility vehicles. For speediest transport to the confined space site, use a two-person crew carrying the bags together, front and back, one end in each hand.

Permit-Required Confined Spaces (OSHA 1910.146)

(a) Scope and application. This section contains requirements for practices and procedures to protect employees in general industry from the hazards of entry into permit-required confined spaces. (k)(3) To facilitate non-entry rescue, retrieval systems or methods shall be used whenever an authorized entrant enters a permit space, unless the retrieval equipment would increase the overall risk of entry or would not contribute to the rescue of the entrant. Retrieval systems shall meet the following requirements: (i) Each authorized entrant shall use a chest or full body harness, with a retrieval line attached at the center of the entrant's back near shoulder level, above the entrant's head, or at another point which the employer can establish presents a profile small enough for the successful removal of the entrant.Wristlets may be used in lieu of the chest or full body harness if the employer can demonstrate that the use of a chest or full body harness is infeasible or creates a greater hazard and that the use of wristlets is the safest and most effective alternative. (ii) The other end of the retrieval line shall be attached to a mechanical device or fixed point outside the permit space in such a manner that rescue can begin as soon as the rescuer becomes aware that rescue is necessary.A mechanical device shall be available to retrieve personnel from vertical type permit spaces more than 5 feet deep.

Requirements for Safety Belts, Harnesses, Lanyards and Lifelines for Construction and Demolition Use. (ANSI A10.14-1991)
1.1 Scope - This standard establishes performance criteria for the manufacture and use of body belts, harnesses, lanyards, lifelines, rope grabs and shock absorbers for construction and demolition. 4.3.3.8 Anchorages for vertical lifelines shall have anchorage strength of at least 5,000 pounds (22.2 kN). 6.1.1.1 Personal fall arrest systems shall be rigged so that an employee can neither free fall more than five feet (1.5m) nor contact any lower level.

Descent Control Devices (CSA-Z259.2.3-99)

1.1 Scope - This standard outlines requirements and classifications for automatic and manual descent control devices intended for use in the workplace. These devices are not used for fall arrest.Appropriate fall protection equipment is also required in the presence of a fall hazard, except in the case of emergency egress. 3.1 Classification by Type - Descent control devices shall be classified by type as follows: a) Type 1E: automatic descent control devices for emergency egresss (may allow multiple usage); b) Type 2E: manual descent control devices with automatic lockoff, for emergency egress; c) Type 2W: manual descent control devices with automatic lockoff, for work positioning; and c) Type 3W: manual descent control devices without automatic lockoff, for work positioning. 6.4.5 Rate of Descent - Type 1E Devices- ...The device shall not allow the test weight to travel faster than 2m/s if the device is intended for use over solid ground...

(OSHA 1926.503 - Training requirements)

(a) Training Program. (1) The employer shall provide a training program for each employee who might be exposed to fall hazards. The program shall enable each employee to recognize the hazards of falling and shall train each employee in the procedures to be followed in order to minimize these hazards.

Safety Belts and Lanyards (CSA Z259.1-95)

1.1 Scope - This standard covers safety belts of tongue buckle type and lanyards. It may be applied to an assembly consisting of a belt with an attached lanyard, or to a belt alone, or to a lanyard alone. 4.1 Belts covered by this Standard should be used for travel restriction and work positioning only, and should not be used as body support in a fall arrest system due to the possibility of death or injury from the following causes a) fallout from the belt; b)effects of extended static suspension in a belt; or c) abdominal injuries. 6.2.1.1... the attachment hardware shall have a minimum breaking strength of 22kN.
