Fall is on its way and that means a trip to the orchard or for those around here to Michigan.

You drive along the road and begin to see the apples turning or the peaches that are already ripe. Fruit is one of those natural desserts that have been enjoyed down through the centuries. We enjoy the same fruit that Jesus enjoyed in his culture, or was enjoyed by Adam and Eve. Speaking of fruit we have the famous passage in the Bible called the Fruit of the Spirit. You may have heard me say this before, but God could have called it the Vegetable of the Spirit, or the Herbs of the Spirit, but He didnt, think about it, why did He say the Fruit of the Spirit, God had to have a reason. Well just as we all know, first of all fruit does give us refreshment, curbs our desire for sugar, can give us added fluid if we are thirsty. Second it is desirable, when we drive by a field and see strawberries, or blueberries, grape, a peach tree, ripe cherries, golden delicious apples, we want to stop and pick one or two or three. We have a desire to want to have it in our life. Third it is colorful, most fruit is on the outside of a vine, bush or tree and the color is usually different in color from the leaves and is noticeable from a distance. So fruit, satisfies, is desirable and easy to see, what does that tell us of the fruit of the Spirit. As is stated in the phrase it is of the Spirit, it is not from hard work, determination but only when we release ourselves into the power and control of Gods wondrous spirit. We do not earn it, or obtain it from a generational gift, it does not come with a title or position, it is only when we humble ourselves and trust in Gods mercy and grace to fill us with the Holy Spirit. Is it mainly for us to enjoy? No like the natural fruit it is to be seen in us to draw others toward a personal relationship with God, so all that we are to say is that it is Gods power at work in and through us. Now if you have forgotten what the fruit of the Spirit is, love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. And this is to been seen in such a way that people who see it in us will desire it because they see in us that we have a satisfaction in our relationship with God and now from the things of the world. It truly should be able to be seen in our everyday life, not just on Sunday or only when we are up in front of persons, it should be seen in our homes with our family so that others are speaking about us, because they desire what we have. How do we make this happen, you dont, you have to let God make it happen. Have a fruitful Fall.

The Best Policy

Honesty before God requires the most fundamental risk of faith we can take; the risk that God is good, that God does love us unconditionally. It is in taking this risk that we rediscover our dignity. To bring the truth of ourselves, just as we are, to God, just as God is, is the most dignified thing we can do in this life. ~Gerald May, Addiction and Grace

LAY LEADER / CHURCH COUNCIL CHAIR What is our mission and how are we doing? Our mission as given to us by Jesus himself, is to go forth and make disciples for Him. We are also to help our fellow humans by ministering to them when they are in need or in trouble. As to how we are doing, I'm not sure I can answer how we are doing as to making new disciples, but I do know that Cicero United Methodist is ministering to those in need. Our LOL ministry reaches out to the community and brings in people that need a good meal and a chance for fellowship. I am fairly certain that in some instances the LOL meal is probably the best meal that some folks will have all week. Our outreach to Uganda has enabled some ladies to have a market for the jewelry they make. Byron has shared that if a local Christian Book Store elects to take on the jewelry it would mean a great difference to these ladies. Because of our willingness, along with Rev. Byron's guidance, we have opened the door for many possibilities for these ladies. We have people involved with Angels Attic and Cicero United Methodist who have been supportive of this ministry that helps those in the northern Hamilton County communities who have needs. Yes, I would say we are doing our mission as to helping those in need. There are other missions that we are involved with in some way and they are also important. Could we do more? Probably. We need to be aware of those opportunities when they present themselves and to act as we are called to act. I am happy and excited to be a part of this church because of our work in mission. ~Dennis Schrumpf, Church Council Chair & Lay Leader~ The Best Policy Honesty before God requires the most fundamental risk of faith we can take: the risk that God is good, that God does love us unconditionally. The Pack is in the process of getting organized and gearing up for their Fall activities. The Boy Scout Troop has a new Eagle Scout. Sam Reitenour passed his Eagle Board of Review in July and is our newest Eagle Scout. The Troop held their annual planning meeting on Sunday, August 11 and have their activities planned for the 2013 - 2014 year. In September the Troop will be holding a Conservation campout and will be doing some conservation projects at Kotewee Park. During September, the Scouts in Troop 103 will be electing their Scout leaders who will serve from October through next March. We have a number of Scouts well qualified for these leadership positions. The Annual Scouting Popcorn Sale starts in September. Your purchase of one or more of the popcorn products helps support Scouting, both in the local unit and at the Council level. Your support is appreciated. As always, the Scouts - Cubs, Boy Scouts & Venturers - appreciate your support of Scouting at Cicero United Methodist. ~Dennis Schrumpf, Chartered Partner Representative for Pack 103, Troop 103 & Crew 103~

I am convinced . That friendships provide the most fertile soil for evangelism. When the reality of Christ is introduced in a relationship of love and trust that has already been established, the effect is powerful. And it seems that invariably, when someone becomes a true follower of Christ, that persons first impulse is to want to find a friend and introduce that friend to Christ. ~John MacArthur

RECYCLING When you are finished with a large item (bed, refrigerator, sofa) and it is still in good condition but you do not know what to do with it, be sure to call local agencies like Angels Attic, your Township Trustees office, or the Cicero Fire Station to see if someone can use the item.. This keeps big items out of landfills AND gives those in need an opportunity to receive furniture or other expensive items without cost. You might be surprised at someones reaction to your unwanted item. Education is learning what you didnt even know you didnt know. WEBSITE NEWS

Saving Grace Grace is the majesty, the freedom, the undeservedness, the unexpectedness, the newness, the arbitrariness, in which a relationship to God and therefore the possibility of knowing him is opened up to man by God Himself. ...Grace is Gods good pleasure. ~ Karl Barth
