1. Welcome Welcome to this campaign edition of the Queensland Newsletter. This newsletter naturally concentrates upon the campaign under way here in Queensland, for the election of an Australian Democrats Senator for Queensland. 2. Report on the launch of the Queensland campaign On Thursday 15/8/13, members and supporters gathered at the Royal on the Park Hotel in Brisbane for the official launch of the campaign to elect an Australian Democrats Senator to parliament this year. Former Senator Dr Michael Macklin, lead candidate Paul Stevenson and support candidate Cheryl Hayden also spoke at the launch. [photo: Paul thanking supporters] 3. Queensland candidates in the media Lead Senate candidate Paul Stevenson has recently published two articles with the political journal onlineopinion. Campaign forums During this time of year, candidate forums are frequent and hectic. Paul Stevenson has been speaking at candidates forums throughout the state, including Cairns in North Queensland and at the University of Queensland here in Brisbane. If you know of any possible media opportunities for Paul Stevenson, or indeed forum opportunities, we would encourage you to notify these to either Fay Lawrence or Cheryl Hayden on either of the numbers listed below. 6. Campaign information One of the realities of modern life is the power of social media, and this is reflected in the fact that some 11 million Australians are active Facebook users. Therefore we have opted to use this as our primary online presence. Adopt a booth programme If you would like to become involved in the Adopt-a-Booth programme, whereby members take responsibility for a particular polling booth on election day, please contact Fay Lawrence. 9. Election night invitation All Queensland Division members and friends are invited to an election night celebration (or commiseration) to be held at the Berkleys on Ann, which is just opposite Brisbane Central Station. Access by public transport is easy. The fundraising raffle will be drawn then, so if you havent already obtained tickets, please contact Fay. 10. Donations Remember that you can make a practical contribution to the campaign by making a cheque out to Australian Democrats (Queensland Division) and posting to PO Box 8, Grange Q 4051.
