11 Radios converting Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP Introduction

This document explains how to use a Phoenix Contact 802.11 Ethernet radio for Modbus RTU (serial) to Modbus-TCP conversion. The Ethernet radio used must contain a serial interface. As of the writing of this document, the following radios are capable of the procedures explained in this document: RAD-80211-XD RAD-80211-XD-BUS RAD-80211-XD/HP RAD-80211-XD/HP-BUS RAD-80211-XD-WM The radios can ONLY perform a Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP conversion for Modbus TCP (Ethernet mastering). The radios can NOT perform the conversion if the Modbus Master is the RTU (serial ) partner. Once configured, the IP address of one of the radios will function as the Modbus TCP slave address. Depending on how the radios are configured the IP address of the radio connected to the master can be used OR the IP address of the radio connected to the slave can be used. Following are procedures for both applications:

Procedures
Using the IP address of the radio connected to the PLC master. In this example that would be IP address: 192.168.0.190 as shown below Modbus connection made to: 192.168.0.190 192.168.0.190 192.168.0.191 Modbus TCP Master PLC 802.11 radio 802.11 radio Modbus RTU Slave PLC

Serial 232/485

Link the radios as you normally would, Access point /Client OR Bridged Enter the web page of the radio connected to the Modbus master Open the Configuration folder. Then the I/O Ports folder. Then click on the Ethernet Ports page Set the Connect to Stream of the Modbus TCP Parameters section to Serial Channel 1 Click Submit

Enter the web page of the radio connected to the Modbus slave PLC Click on the Configuration folder. Then the I/O Ports folder. The Serial Ports Page If you will be using RS232, place the Connect To Stream setting of the RS232 Port Parameters section to Serial Channel 1 9. Set the remaining serial parameters of this section to those required by the Modbus slave and click Submit 10. If you will be using RS422/485, place the Connect To Stream setting of the RS422/485 Port Parameters section to Serial Channel 1 11. Set the remaining serial parameters of this section to those required by the Modbus slave and click Submit

F-2 The Modbus master should now be able to connect/communicate to the IP address of the radio connected to it. Modbus RTU will be converted to Modbus TCP by the Modbus TCP Parameters gateway. The data will then be streamed on Serial Channel 1 to the Serial port of the radio connected to the Modbus slave PLC. Using the IP address of the radio connected to the Modbus slave PLC Modbus connection made to: 192.168.0.191 192.168.0.190 192.168.0.191 Modbus TCP Master PLC 802.11 radio 802.11 radio Modbus RTU Slave PLC

Link the radios as you normally would, Access point /Client OR Bridged Enter the web page of the radio connected to the Modbus slave Open the Configuration folder. Then the I/O Ports folder. Then click on the Ethernet Ports page Set the Connect to Stream of the Modbus TCP Parameters section to Local Channel 1 Click the Submit button

F-3 In the same radio, click on the Serial Ports page Set the Connect To Stream setting of the RS232 Port Parameters section to Local Channel 1 If you will be using RS422/485 make this change in the RS422/485 section Set the remaining serial parameters to those required by the Modbus serial slave and click Submit

The Modbus master should now be able to connect/communicate to the IP address of the radio connected to the Modbus Slave. Modbus RTU will be converted to Modbus TCP by the Modbus TCP Parameters gateway of the radio connected to the Modbus slave. The data will then be streamed on Local Channel 1 to the Serial port of the this radio.
