Social Organizations

Mr. Copp, Room 206

This course will build on the skills and concepts you have learned in History and Social Studies classes in previous years to look at how societies are organized, and how decisions are made. The way a state organizes itself politically (how it is governed and how laws are made) and economically (how the necessities of life are provided and shared) affects the lives of all its citizens. We will see how societies in the past and present deal with important decisions that often have an impact beyond their borders. The five units of study are: Unit 1: Political Decision-Making (the French Revolution) Unit 2: Economic Decision-Making (the Industrial Revolution) Unit 3: Ideology (Nations under Stress) Unit 4: International Economic Organizations (Imperialism) Unit 5: International Political Organizations (the Build-up to WWI) Expectations: There are no new rules to learn in this class, but the common rules of the school and those that will help us proceed through our course material will be enforced. It is expected that: We will come to class prepared and ready to participate. We will respect people and property in the classroom. We will listen to who is talking and raise our hands to ask questions. We will follow the common rules of the classrooms and hallways. We will try.

To put it in simple terms, if you attend regularly and give an honest effort when you are here, you will have no trouble passing this class. If you are having any difficulty, talk to me and take advantage of our RTI period to meet individually with me. RTI passes can be requested by students in class, or I will suggest that some use that period to finish work. Demerits will be given to students who behave in such a way that breaks these rules. Demerits are intended to change disruptive behaviors, but can also lead to suspensions, or removal from class you should choose to follow the easier path. Students with three demerits in a semester will be removed from the class.

Marks: The work from each of the five units and the final exam (which counts as a unit itself) will be of equal value and will include three parts: Level 1 - Understanding (knowledge of facts) 60% Level 2 - Analysis (organizing facts, determining cause and effect) 20% Level 3 - Hypothesizing (presenting data to support a hypothesis) 20%

All units will include these three elements. Marks will be available to you and your parents through the ConnectEd portal on the school website. Markbooks will be printed for those parents who need a paper copy (you should let me know). Checking this web-based information is the best way for you to be responsible for your own success. Work will be accepted at any time up until the end of a unit. No marks will be removed for lateness, but as final unit marks are calculated, all work must be handed in or receive a zero grade. It is important to note the following: You CANNOT PASS without ALL Level 1 work completed and handed in by semesters end If you complete only Level 1 work, your maximum mark is 60% Any and all Level 2 or Level 3 work done will increase your mark. You may choose to complete L2 and L3 work at any time, but it must be handed in before semesters end Exemptions and/or recommends are available only to students with a passing grade, no demerits, and (at least) all Level 1 work completed More Information: This semester I will be away for divisional meetings and Professional Development as well as a full week in November. I will provide the substitute with adequate work for this time and I will keep in contact with the school to ensure the class is progressing. In my absence, you are expected to behave in a respectful manner. Anyone and everyone who is reported to me bad behaviour during these days will automatically receive a demerit. I will do my best to be available to provide any help you need and also to meet you and your parents if they wish. Parent-Teacher interviews will be coming up in April.
