Productivity vs. Waste Energy

Situation/Description Cement Manufacture. The company uses solid-waste derived products as source of C. However, the use of alternative fuel presents several challenges that must be addressed in order to achieve successful application. The company are faced with a technical contradiction between high productivity and waste energy. Solutions Replacement of Mechanical System. Replace a mechanical system with an optical, acoustical, thermal or olfactory system. Prior Action. Perform required changes to an object completely or partially in advance. Pneumatic or Hydraulic Construction. Replace solid parts of an object with a gas or liquid. Transformation of Properties. Change the temperature or volume. Innovations The solution to this problem would be to perform required changes to the equipment used in the production of cement in order to recover heat like in the preheater and cooler. Another solution would be to change the operating temperatures in preheater and in the cooler so that the energy used in this process would be used in the rotary kiln (the heart of the process). This would maximize the productivity instead.

Waste of Energy vs. Complexity of Control

Situation/Description Power Grid Management Large and complex IT infrastructure can quickly drain any companys resources. This is especially true for energy providers, whose critical systems must be closely monitored and controlled in order to maintain an uninterrupted flow of energy to customers as well as diminish any energy loss from the system. However, monitoring and controlling these critical systems can be a tedious and complex process. The company is then faced with the problem of eliminating/diminishing waste of energy at the cost of the control complexity. Solutions Local Quality. Transition from homogeneous to heterogeneous structure of an object or outside environment (action). Change the system from uniform to non-uniform. Make each part of a technical system fulfil a different, yet useful function Innovations The best way to address this problem is to introduce feedback into the system. With feedback, monitoring and management can become very easy. The whole system operations can be controlled in one single screen which virtually eliminates the need to staff on individual and specific system operations. Of course, feedback can be introduced in many ways. For example, Dynamicity. Characteristics of by providing feedback from the power an object, or outside plant to the individual homes about the environment, must be altered status of the supply. to provide optimal performance at each stage of an operation. Also, automation of daily operations which are being performed manually Feedback. Introduce feedback can help address this problem. into the system.

Complexity of Device vs. Convenience of Use

Situation/Description Laboratory Equipment The use of a buoyancy type densitometer in the laboratory for liquid density measurements for certain experiments which is complicated in a sense it has several parts that has to be adjusted and are sensitive. Solutions Copying. A simplified and inexpensive copy should be used in place of a fragile original or an object that is inconvenient to operate. Innovations Copying means that an existing device or equipment is replaced with a device of the same function that is less complicated to operate such as SMART series electronic densitometer works on basis of the principle of vibration frequency variation. With this equipment, the liquid sample will just be placed in compartment where measuring sensors are installed and then the density of the liquid will be displayed in an LED screen. Also, it is capable of storing these density data.

Product Mix vs. Client Adaptability

Situation/Description Ready-mix Commercial Products A flour company produces a wide range of flour and flour-based products. In order to extend their product market to the public, they wanted to produce home baker products, ready-mix commercial products. They were faced with the contradiction of the product mix (the product they are about to offer) and the clients adaptability (the market value/sell point of the new product). Solutions Local Quality. The mixing requirements of flour should be crafted to suit the specific application of the product. The company can sell the new products to the public by coming up with new uses of their product. Innovations The company should offer a good market price for the new product, so that the product can readily fit to the public/clients demands. The lower the company can give for the price, without sacrificing the quality of the product, the higher the demands of the public will be. These than can increase their market value, since they can Dynamicity. The companys supply for the publics demand. product mix should be consistent in the quality but different in use.

Continuous Process vs. Sampling Frequency

Situation/Description Corn Chips Production Interest in continuous process has increased rapidly in the recent years. A small company producing corn chips wanted to convert their process from batch to a continuous process. They are then faced with the problem of the continuous process vs the sampling frequency, how often do they have to take samples of their product to ensure the quality. Solutions Innovations Segmentation. The process of The process can be divided into parts producing the corn snacks and are connected by conveyors.
