Looking for parishioners to take communion to residents at Concord Care Center, Garner, on Sunday mornings at 9:15 AM. Volunteers Needed: Hancock County Chapter of Thrivent has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa to build a house at 1140 Grove Ave., Garner, for Shaun & Jenny Wumkes. Volunteers are needed for painting, siding, drywall, flooring, plumbing, landscaping, cleaning, or furnishing snacks/lunch for crews. FROM THE DESK OF FR. DENNIS MILLER

This has been a productive couple of weeks for us in the Archangels Catholic Cluster. If things go according to plan, we will have passed all six parish budgets for the fiscal year 2013-2014 before the September 1 deadline. This represents hundreds of hours of work from very dedicated people. Budgeting is a way of ensuring that parish finances are used in the best way possible to ensure future viability and vitality. I want to thank all of the people who have worked so hard to ensure that we do this prayerfully and respectfully. And, as always, I want to thank all of you who so faithfully contribute to provide for the needs of your parish. Last week, we had our cluster pastoral council meeting and it has become clear that its time for me to host a series of parish meetings to explain where we are in the clustering process. The meetings will take place immediately following Mass on the following weekends Saturday, September 14, at St. Patricks in Buffalo Center Sunday, September 15, at St. Patricks in Lake Mills and St. James in Forest City Saturday, September 21, at St. Wenceslaus in Duncan Sunday, September 22, at St. Patricks in Britt and St. Boniface in Garner I hope, in the next few bulletin columns, to lay some foundational principles of clustering that will, hopefully, help to prepare us for those meetings. The biggest challenge with creating a cluster is that it is a midway step that represents more change, something no one likes. On the one hand, clustering means that there will be some collaboration between parishes, in particular with staffing. So, rather than having five DREs for the five different programs, we will have a Director of Faith Formation and a Coordinator of Faith Formation working together for all five. However, clustering is not consolidation where we combine up all our finances and consider ourselves one parish with several buildings. Clustering continues to foster the unique gifts a parish has while encouraging a larger identity as well.
