ABSTRACT
The answer to current air pollution is mainly vehicles and industries. Leaving industries apart, vehicles release a large amount of polluting gases daily into the environment. This pollution needs to be reduced. Transportation today is mainly based on either diesel or gasoline. Diesel is a less volatile fuel as compared to petrol. Diesel powered vehicles release less amount of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide as compared to the gasoline powered. Diesel engines involve injection system and gasoline engines involve fuel mixing with air and then supply to combustion chamber i.e. carburetion system. With the rising problems of carburetion like back firing, unevenly composed fuel supply, surging of fuel, etc has led to its obsolete use. Today the gasoline powered vehicles also use injection system. They are either direct injection or indirect injection. This way fuel was less wasted and quite much efficiently utilized. To control pollution catalytic converters were used. It treated the exhaust gases and absorbed upto 80% of the harmful gases. Then came the Electronic Fuel Injection systems. This not only injects the fuel in a very precise manner but also controls the emission of exhaust gases. With the help of various sensors like exhaust oxygen sensor, speed sensor, throttle valve control, coolant temperature sensor, etc and the ECU it has become easier to control engine functions.
