The Arab League

Arab League, is the popular name for the League of Arab States, formed in 1945. It was formed so that Arab nations could have a political voice. The original charter members were Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan (now Jordan), Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. A representative of Palestinian Arabs, although he did not sign the charter because he represented no recognized government, was given full status and a vote in the Arab League. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was granted full membership in 1976. Other current members include Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates. There are a total of 21 countries in the League at present.
Kuwait became a member of the Arab League in 1961 soon after it attained independence.

The league is organized into a council and special committees, and its headquarters is in Cairo. The league coordinates among the signatory nations on education, finance, law, trade, and foreign policy, and it forbids the use of force to settle disagreements among members. Among the most important activities of the Arab League have been its attempts to improve Arab economic life. The League has established the Arab Telecommunications Union, the Arab Postal Union, and the Arab Development Bank (now the Arab Financial Organization). Other agencies connected with the league include the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization; and the Arab League Labor Organization. The goal of the agreement is for the free movement of money and workers among member countries. The overall purpose of the Arab League is to work for the common good of the people of Arabic speaking countries. www.infoplease.com
